🌿 Today's Gentle Affirmations
Repeat each one after Martin or simply listen. Let the words be an invitation:
* I can rest without making every thought disappear.
* I can leave an unfinished task for another moment.
* I am allowed to move at a gentler pace.
* I can bring my attention back with kindness.
* For this moment, I give myself permission to unwind.
💡 3 Daily Caring Tips
1. Give unfinished tasks a place outside your head: Write a short list, then choose what actually needs your attention next. If a task can wait, note when you'll return to it.
2. Try doing one ordinary thing at an unhurried pace: Make a drink without checking your phone. Walk to the window and notice the world outside. Finish one small activity before beginning another.
3. Make a little room between activity and rest: When you finish work or a demanding task, allow a brief transition. Put things away, stretch comfortably and sit quietly for a few minutes.

Books at Bedtime By Calming Anxiety - The Return of the Exiles - By Lord Dunsany
Show notes
The Return of the Exiles by Lord Dunsany — A Short, Mysterious Bedtime Story at Stonehenge | Books at Bedtime
Drift off with The Return of the Exiles by Lord Dunsany, a short, strange and haunting little tale set among the ancient stones of Stonehenge, read aloud by Martin Hewlett on Books at Bedtime, the sleep story series from Calming Anxiety.
Cycling across the English countryside one day, the narrator comes upon two very old men sitting by the roadside: one with a hammer and a blackened, hole-filled leather apron, the other with one eye and a spear. They seem shabby, humble and oddly apologetic. Touching his greasy cap, the one with the hammer asks the way to Stonehenge. "After all these years," they keep murmuring to each other, "we might just go back, just once."
The narrator points the way and rides on, but when he reaches the great stone circle himself, he finds a solemn group of about twenty men already waiting among the stones, as if expecting someone. And before long, the two strange old men come striding up the road. Who are they, and why have they been away so very long? Dunsany leaves just enough unsaid to set your imagination wandering as you drift towards sleep.
This classic short story for adults is a quietly eerie wind-down for a busy mind, with Dunsany's dreamlike, mythic prose, the timeless atmosphere of Stonehenge and Martin's calm, unhurried narration. It's ideal for anyone who loves old legends, folklore and a touch of mystery before sleep.
If you enjoyed it, you'll find more Lord Dunsany on Books at Bedtime, including The Hen and A Moral Little Tale, alongside classic stories by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman and L.M. Montgomery.
The Return of the Exiles was first published in Fifty-One Tales (London: Elkin Mathews; New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1915). Lord Dunsany (1878–1957).
Hosted by clinical hypnotherapist and former paramedic Martin Hewlett.

Do you find yourself worrying about something that hasn't happened yet, then imagining what might happen after that? One thought becomes another, and a small uncertainty turns into a whole afternoon spent trying to prepare for every possibility. If you've been wondering how to stop overthinking the future, this 10-minute guided meditation gives you a little space to step back from "what if" thoughts. For these few minutes, there is nothing you need to predict.

🌿 Today's Gentle Affirmations
Repeat each one quietly or simply listen, without needing to force a feeling:
* I can leave some questions unanswered for now.
* A "what if" thought is a possibility, not a prediction.
* I can take one useful step without solving everything.
* I am allowed to rest while life remains uncertain.
* I can meet what comes with care, and ask for support when I need it.
💡 3 Daily Caring Tips
1. Ask whether you can act on it today: If you can, choose one manageable step. Write the email, check the appointment time, or make a short list of what you need.
2. Give recurring worries somewhere to wait: Keep a notebook or a note on your phone, write down the concern, and choose a brief time during the day to look at it.
3. Make a small plan for support: If a concern feels difficult, consider who could help you think it through: a friend, someone you trust, or a professional who understands the situation. You don't need to know every answer yourself.

Books at Bedtime By Calming Anxiety - A Moral Little Tale - By Lord Dunsany
Show notes
A Moral Little Tale by Lord Dunsany — A Short Classic Fable for Sleep & Insomnia | Books at Bedtime
Drift off with A Moral Little Tale by Lord Dunsany, a short, witty and thought-provoking fable about joy, dancing and the people who would forbid them, read aloud by Martin Hewlett on Books at Bedtime, the sleep story series from Calming Anxiety.
There was once an earnest Puritan who held it wrong to dance, and for his principles he laboured hard. He discouraged dancing, helped to close Sunday entertainments, disapproved of fanciful poetry and always dressed in black. Everyone respected his honest face and his flowing white beard, and agreed he was a good man by his own lights.
Then one night, a most unexpected visitor appears to him in a dream and says, "Well done." What follows is a sharp and surprising conversation about laughter and music, butterflies on sunny hillsides, the warm west wind, village couples whispering under the harvest moon, and who really made them all. In just a few minutes, Dunsany turns everything the earnest man believed upside down.
This classic short story for adults is a gentle wind-down for a busy mind, with Dunsany's lyrical, dreamlike prose and Martin's calm, unhurried narration. Like all good fables, it carries a sting in its tail, so it's perfect for anyone who enjoys a little wit and wisdom before sleep.
If you enjoyed it, you'll also find Lord Dunsany's The Hen on Books at Bedtime, from the same collection, alongside Mary E. Wilkins Freeman's The Squirrel and L.M. Montgomery's Charlotte's Ladies.
A Moral Little Tale was first published in Fifty-One Tales (London: Elkin Mathews; New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1915). Lord Dunsany (1878–1957).
Hosted by clinical hypnotherapist and former paramedic Martin Hewlett.

A 10-minute guided meditation for overthinking after conversations - Part 1 of 3 - Guided Meditation for Panic and Anxiety
Show notes
How to Stop Replaying Conversations — Guided Meditation for Overthinking After Conversations | When Your Mind Won't Stop, Part 1 of 3
Do you leave a conversation only to carry it around for the rest of the day? You replay something you said, remember a silence, a look, a change in someone's voice, and your mind starts filling in the gaps. Did I sound foolish? Have I upset them? Should I have said something different? If you're wondering how to stop replaying conversations, this 10-minute guided meditation is a little breathing space. You don't have to work out what everyone thinks of you before you can rest.
This is the first of three sessions in When Your Mind Won't Stop, hosted by clinical hypnotherapist Martin Hewlett. Each session stands on its own, so there's nothing to catch up with. For more support between episodes, Anchored is Martin's app for panic and anxiety, with guided sessions and a free, offline Instant Calm tool. Download on iPhone: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/anchored-panic-anxiety/id6785035669 and Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.martinhewlett.anchored. And try Martin's new health app, Thole, free in beta on iPhone (iOS only): https://testflight.apple.com/join/aUKB8W7N
There's no breathing pattern and no counting today. We simply notice the out-breath, soften the shoulders, jaw and eyes, and gently name what the mind is doing: "I'm replaying a conversation." You'll learn why another person's silence can have many meanings, receive five kind affirmations for overthinking after conversations, and three daily caring tips.
⏱️ Time Chapters
* 00:00 – Replaying a conversation all day?
* 00:38 – Welcome: When Your Mind Won't Stop, Part 1
* 00:58 – Each session stands on its own
* 01:07 – Finding somewhere comfy

* 03:06 – Why we replay conversations
* 03:24 – Letting the gap remain a gap
* 03:55 – This is where you are now

* 09:45 – Tomorrow, Part 2: overthinking the future
* 10:10 – Anchored, Instant Calm and Premium
* 10:46 – Until tomorrow, be kind
🌿 Today's Gentle Affirmations
Repeat each one quietly or simply listen. You don't have to force yourself to believe anything:
* I can let a conversation end without knowing exactly what everyone thought.
* I am allowed to be human and imperfect when I speak.
* I can learn from a moment and still treat myself with kindness.
* I can take a useful step when needed and leave the replay behind for now.
* I am bringing my attention back to the life in front of me.
💡 3 Daily Caring Tips
1. Separate what happened from what you are imagining: You might know someone gave a short answer, but you may be guessing that they were annoyed with you. Try asking, "What did I actually observe?"
2. Ask whether there is one useful action to take: Perhaps a brief clarification would help. Perhaps there is a lesson you need to remember.
3. Turn to something concrete and ordinary: Feel your feet as you walk. Notice the warmth of a mug. Listen carefully to the person who is with you now.
📱 Take Calming Anxiety With You Anywhere
You don't need a final verdict on that conversation to continue your day. Tomorrow, in Part 2 of When Your Mind Won't Stop, we'll explore how to stop overthinking the future and give those "what if" thoughts a little less of our attention. Until then, keep Anchored close:

Books at Bedtime By Calming Anxiety - The Hen - By Lord Dunsany
Show notes
The Hen by Lord Dunsany — A Short, Gentle Bedtime Story for Sleep & Insomnia | Books at Bedtime
Drift off to sleep with The Hen by Lord Dunsany, a tiny, wise and gently funny fable about the swallows, the south and a hen with big ideas, read aloud by Martin Hewlett on Books at Bedtime, the sleep story series from Calming Anxiety.
All along the farmyard gables the swallows sit in a row, twittering uneasily, thinking only of summer and the south, for autumn is afoot and the north wind waiting. One day they are suddenly gone, and the whole poultry yard talks of nothing but the swallows and the south. "I think I shall go south myself next year," says the hen.
A year later the swallows rise on the north wind with a strange old knowledge in their wings, flying high over the huge and homeless sea, past glittering fog banks, wandering ships and pearl divers, to the summer valleys they know. And the hen? She spreads her wings, runs out of the poultry yard and flutters off down the road on a great adventure of her own, all the way to a garden full of roses.
This classic bedtime story for adults is perfect for winding down, easing insomnia and letting a busy mind settle into deep, restful sleep. Dunsany's dreamlike, poetic prose, a quietly funny ending and Martin's calm, unhurried narration make it an ideal short sleep audiobook for anyone who finds it hard to switch off at night.
Lord Dunsany, the Irish fantasy writer best known for The King of Elfland's Daughter, is new to Books at Bedtime. If you enjoy classic short stories, you'll also find Mary E. Wilkins Freeman's The Squirrel and The Lost Dog, and L.M. Montgomery's Charlotte's Ladies.
The Hen was first published in Fifty-One Tales (London: Elkin Mathews; New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1915). Lord Dunsany (1878–1957).
Hosted by clinical hypnotherapist and former paramedic Martin Hewlett.

1. Give the thoughts somewhere to go: When the same worry keeps circling, write it down in a sentence, then ask yourself, "Is there one useful action I can take?" If there is, choose it. If there isn't, you can leave the thought on the page.
2. Gently reconnect with your surroundings: Feel your feet against the floor. Notice the warmth of a mug in your hands, the colour of something nearby, or the sounds outside the window.
3. Make room for a little less input: Choose a short part of your day to put your phone aside and do one thing at a time. Eat something slowly, walk for a few minutes, or sit somewhere comfy.

Books at Bedtime By Calming Anxiety - The Squirrel - By Mary E. Wilkins Freeman
Show notes
The Squirrel by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman — A Cosy Autumn Bedtime Story for Sleep & Insomnia | Books at Bedtime
Drift off to sleep with The Squirrel by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, a gentle, gently funny autumn tale of two devoted old couples, one human and one furry, and a tree full of English walnuts, read aloud by Martin Hewlett on Books at Bedtime, the sleep story series from Calming Anxiety.
Near an old New England farmhouse there grows a beautiful English walnut tree, and every summer the kindly old farmer and his wife look up at its laden branches and say, "This year we shall have nuts." But they never do. The mystery is simple enough: a squirrel and his lifelong mate consider every nut on that tree their own, and all through the crisp, golden mornings of a long, late autumn they race back and forth, cheeks full, to their secret storehouse under the woodpile.
By the end of October, the squirrels are the richest pair in the woods, ready for a winter of plenty and love, just as the thrifty old couple are comfortably settled for theirs. Then the farmer's wife decides the woodpile ought to be split and stored before winter sets in. As the old man chops patiently away, day after day, the squirrels begin to grow anxious, and the question of whose nuts they really are is about to be put to the test.
This classic bedtime story for adults is perfect for winding down, easing insomnia and letting a busy mind settle into deep, restful sleep. Freeman's frosty autumn mornings, quiet farmhouse humour, a tender-hearted ending and Martin's calm, unhurried narration make it an ideal sleep audiobook for anyone who finds it hard to switch off at night.
If you enjoy Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, you'll find more of her stories on Books at Bedtime, including The Lost Dog, Seventoes' Ghost and The Three Old Sisters and the Old Beau.

Can't Sleep? Racing Thoughts at Bedtime — Sleep Affirmations to Let Go of Worry | 10-Minute Guided Sleep Meditation
Can't sleep because your mind gets louder the moment the world goes quiet? The lights go out, the house settles, and suddenly your thoughts begin racing: everything you didn't get done today, everything you need to do tomorrow, a conversation you keep replaying. You're tired and you want sleep, but your mind seems determined to stay awake. This guided sleep meditation helps you let go of worry, calm racing thoughts and use positive sleep affirmations to feel comfortable simply resting.
Hosted by clinical hypnotherapist Martin Hewlett. For longer sleep sessions, Martin's Anchored app has a whole selection under one tap for sleep, plus an ambient night light to help you drift off calmly. Find it on iPhone: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/anchored-panic-anxiety/id6785035669 and Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.martinhewlett.anchored. You don't have to force yourself to sleep, make your mind completely quiet, or stay awake until the end. We breathe slowly with a longer, softer out-breath, then imagine placing the whole day in a bag beside your bedroom door, and stepping into a peaceful room where the bed is waiting for you. Five gentle sleep affirmations and three daily caring tips help you rest, for tonight and the nights to come.

* 00:00 – When your mind gets louder at night
* 00:50 – Welcome from Martin
* 01:06 – You don't have to force sleep

* 08:14 – Your 3 daily caring tips
* 09:26 – Nothing else you need to do
* 10:00 – You have done enough for today
* 10:12 – Good night, my friend
🌿 Tonight's Gentle Sleep Affirmations
You don't need to repeat them or even remember them. Simply let the words drift through your awareness:
* The day is finished and I have done enough.
* I can put my worries down and return to them tomorrow if I need to.
* In this moment I can allow myself to feel comfortable and supported.
* My body can rest even when my mind is still settling.
* I do not need to force sleep. I can allow it to arrive in its own time.
💡 3 Daily Caring Tips
1. Let tomorrow wait: If a worry returns while you're lying in bed, gently remind yourself that you don't need to solve it tonight. If something genuinely needs remembering, write it down and leave it till morning.
2. Give your phone a bedtime too: When you can, put your phone aside a little before you intend to sleep. Give your mind a chance to settle without another message, headline or thing to think about.
3. Be kind to yourself tomorrow: If tonight's sleep isn't perfect, try not to spend tomorrow criticising yourself for it. A difficult night doesn't mean you failed. You can still approach your day gently.

Show notes
The Lost Dog by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman — A Moving Bedtime Story for Sleep & Insomnia | Books at Bedtime
Drift off to sleep with The Lost Dog by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, a short, tender and deeply moving tale of loyalty, love and a dog's faithful heart, read aloud by Martin Hewlett on Books at Bedtime, the sleep story series from Calming Anxiety.
A beautiful dog with a coat of tawny gold has lost his master in the crowded city streets. All day he searches, nose to the ground, hungry and exhausted, following false trails through a great tide of people. As the city lights blaze out and night settles in, he fixes his eyes on a young stranger in shabby clothes, a man he somehow knows could love a dog, and follows him a mile out into the countryside to a lonely house among the trees.
That night, before the hearth fire, the young man shares his supper and sings in a magnificent tenor voice, and the dog, who does not much care for music, lies listening on an old skin rug. At midnight there comes a ring at the door that changes both their lives. Yet through all the good years that follow, the dog never quite stops searching in his sleep for the old master he lost.
This classic bedtime story for adults is perfect for winding down, easing insomnia and letting a busy mind settle into deep, restful sleep. Freeman's gentle storytelling, a quietly bittersweet ending and Martin's calm, unhurried narration make it an ideal sleep audiobook for anyone who finds it hard to switch off at night, and a special one for every dog lover.

🌿 Today's Positive Affirmations for Overthinking
Repeat them silently or out loud. You don't have to believe them immediately, just let the words settle:
* My thoughts are not facts, and I do not have to believe every one of them.
* I do not need to solve everything right now.
* I can step away from overthinking and return to the present moment.
* I have faced difficult moments before, and I can trust myself to take the next step.
* My mind deserves peace, and I give myself permission to rest.
💡 3 Daily Caring Tips
1. Give your worries an appointment: If you keep worrying about the same thing, set aside 10 minutes later in the day to write down what's bothering you. When the thought returns before then, gently remind yourself you've already made time for it.
2. Change your surroundings: When you're stuck in a worry loop, stand up, stretch or walk into another room. A small change can interrupt the cycle and bring your attention back to the present.
3. Change "what if" into "even if": Instead of asking "what if something goes wrong?", try "even if something doesn't go to plan, I can take things one step at a time." You don't need certainty about the future to have confidence in your ability to respond.

Books at Bedtime By Calming Anxiety - Three Old Sisters and the Old Beau - By Mary E. Wilkins Freeman
Show notes
The Three Old Sisters and the Old Beau by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman — A Gentle Bedtime Story for Sleep & Insomnia | Books at Bedtime
Drift off to sleep with The Three Old Sisters and the Old Beau by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, a tender, wistful New England tale of lifelong devotion and hearts that never grew old, read aloud by Martin Hewlett on Books at Bedtime, the sleep story series from Calming Anxiety.
Rachel, Nancy and Camilla have lived all their lives in the house where they were born. The youngest is nearly seventy, yet they are still the most youthful maidens in the village. On summer evenings, their shadows can be seen on the window curtains playing at graces with ribboned hoops. Each afternoon at five o'clock they sit in state in their cool front hall, dressed in the silks and muslins of their girlhood, bent over their embroidery.
And always, on a pleasant summer afternoon, the old beau comes stepping across the road from his house behind the pines, in his silk bell hat and blue swallow-tailed coat with bright brass buttons, flourishing his ivory-headed cane. He has never had another sweetheart, and they have never had another beau, and for as long as anyone can remember he has taken tea and pound cake from a blue china cup and plate. But which of the three sisters holds his heart? Nobody in the village has ever known.
This classic bedtime story for adults is perfect for winding down, easing insomnia and letting a busy mind settle into deep, restful sleep. Freeman's quiet, old-fashioned village, a gently bittersweet ending and Martin's calm, unhurried narration make it an ideal sleep audiobook for anyone who finds it hard to switch off at night.

🌿 Today's Abundance Affirmations
In this moment of peace and tranquillity, visualise these words and repeat:
* I notice and appreciate the good things already present in my life.
* I am open to new opportunities and willing to recognise them.
* There is room in my life for abundance, happiness and possibility.
* I practise gratitude for the small things that make each day meaningful.
* I take positive steps towards the life I want to create.
💡 3 Daily Caring Tips
1. Notice three good things: While you're brushing your teeth, making a cup of tea or getting ready for bed, think of three things you appreciate today. They can be tiny: a warm drink, a friendly smile or a moment of peace.
2. Stay open to one small opportunity: Today, look for one opportunity to do something positive. Perhaps it's starting a conversation, trying something new or taking the first step towards a goal you've been putting off. You don't need to change your whole life, just take one step.
3. Remember that joy doesn't always cost money: If you catch yourself thinking you can't afford to enjoy life, look for one simple pleasure that's freely available: a walk outside, your favourite music, or a conversation with someone you care about. Just give yourself permission to enjoy it.

Books at Bedtime By Calming Anxiety - Seventoes' Ghost - By Mary E. Wilkins Freeman
Show notes
Seventoes' Ghost by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman — A Gentle Bedtime Story for Sleep & Insomnia | Books at Bedtime
Drift off to sleep with Seventoes' Ghost by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, a gentle, old-fashioned New England tale of a boy, a puppy, a grandfather's beloved cat and a guilty conscience, read aloud by Martin Hewlett on Books at Bedtime, the sleep story series from Calming Anxiety.
Young Benjamin Wellman has wanted a dog ever since he was born. So on a hot summer's day he walks three miles to the village and back to fetch a clumsy yellow puppy he has already named Caesar. But Grandsir, his stern old grandfather, has always preferred cats to dogs, and he won't hear a word of it. Nothing must upset Seventoes, his splendid great yellow cat with seven toes on every paw. The puppy has to go.
Heartbroken, Benjamin trudges down the dusty road past stone walls hidden in wild roses and fields dotted with haymakers, to give Caesar away to his friend Sammy Tucker. On the long walk home through the orchard, brooding over his wrongs, he comes upon Seventoes stretched out in the sun on the ledge of the old well. In one moment of temper Benjamin does something he instantly regrets, and moments later he sees something on the shed roof that turns him white with terror. (Cat lovers, don't worry. This story ends sweetly.)
This classic bedtime story for adults is perfect for winding down, easing insomnia and letting a busy mind settle into deep, restful sleep. Freeman's warm summer farmyard, a tender ending at sunset and Martin's calm, unhurried narration make it an ideal sleep audiobook for anyone who finds it hard to switch off at night.
Mary E. Wilkins Freeman is best known for A New England Nun and Other Stories. If you enjoy classic short stories, you'll find many more on Books at Bedtime, including L.M. Montgomery's Charlotte's Ladies, The Little Black Doll and The Gossip of Valley View.
Seventoes' Ghost first appeared in Harper's Young People and was collected in Young Lucretia and Other Stories (Harper & Brothers, 1892). Mary E. Wilkins Freeman (1852–1930) and this story are in the public domain.

I Am Enough — Positive Affirmations for Self-Worth, Self-Confidence & Negative Self-Talk | 10-Minute Guided Meditation
Feeling like you're not good enough? There's a voice that follows you around. It replays something you said yesterday, reminds you of what you haven't finished, and notices every mistake and imperfection. Would you ever speak to a friend the way you sometimes speak to yourself? I Am Enough is a 10-minute guided meditation with positive affirmations for self-worth, self-confidence and overcoming negative self-talk. Today, we change that conversation.
Hosted by clinical hypnotherapist Martin Hewlett. For more, Martin's Anxiety Circuit Breaker is at https://calminganxiety.org and built into the Anchored app on the paid plan. Get Anchored on iPhone: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/anchored-panic-anxiety/id6785035669 and Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.martinhewlett.anchored. And Martin's new health and wellness app, Thole, is now in free beta testing on iPhone. Join here (iOS only): https://testflight.apple.com/join/aUKB8W7N
With one hand resting over your heart, we breathe with Martin's gentle 4-2-6 rhythm, then imagine a misty window on a cold morning. The mist is every unkind thought: I'm not good enough, I should have done better, everyone else has their life together. With each out-breath the glass clears, until you can see something beautiful: you. You'll receive five affirmations for self-worth and confidence, and three daily caring tips for quietening your inner critic.

🌿 Today's Positive Affirmations for Self-Worth
Choose whichever fits, and allow it to find its place in your soul:
* I am enough, exactly as I am today.
* I can be kind to myself even when I make mistakes.
* My best is enough, even when it isn't perfect.
* I choose to speak to myself with patience, kindness and compassion.
* I deserve love, respect and happiness just as I am.
💡 3 Daily Caring Tips
1. Challenge your inner critic: When you notice yourself thinking something harsh, ask one simple question: "Would I say this to someone I love?"
2. Celebrate what you've done, not just what's left to do: At some point today, stop and acknowledge something you've completed. It doesn't have to be impressive. Sometimes getting through a difficult day is an achievement in itself.
3. Learn to accept the compliment: If somebody says something kind about you today, resist the temptation to dismiss it. You don't have to explain it away. Simply smile and say, "Thank you."

Books at Bedtime By Calming Anxiety - Charlotte's Ladies - By Lucy M Montgomery
Show notes
Charlotte's Ladies by L.M. Montgomery — A Heart-Warming Bedtime Story for Sleep & Insomnia | Books at Bedtime
Drift off to sleep with Charlotte's Ladies by L.M. Montgomery, a sweet and heart-warming story of an orphan girl, two lonely ladies and a very handsome cat, from the author of Anne of Green Gables, read aloud by Martin Hewlett on Books at Bedtime, the sleep story series from Calming Anxiety.
Charlotte Turner has mouse-coloured hair, any number of freckles, and a home in an orphan asylum, all brick walls, prim walks and doses of sulphur and molasses. But one spring day, searching for the little yellow daffodils that grow in the north-west corner, she discovers a gap in the old asylum fence where a board has fallen away. Through it she glimpses a sunny woodland road, and along it walks a pretty lady with golden hair and lovely blue eyes that ought to be laughing, but are very sad.
That same evening Charlotte finds a second gap, looking into the most beautiful garden she has ever seen, full of tulips, lilacs and blossoming trees. There a tall, jolly lady with black eyes tends her flowers, followed everywhere by a big, furry and very handsome cat. Day after day, Charlotte slips away to her two secret gaps, and slowly makes friends with both of her ladies. Neither knows about the other, and each of them is lonelier than she lets on.
This classic bedtime story for adults is perfect for winding down, easing insomnia and letting a busy mind settle into deep, restful sleep. Montgomery's gentle springtime gardens, warm humour, a happy ending and Martin's calm, unhurried narration make it an ideal sleep audiobook for anyone who finds it hard to switch off at night.
If you enjoy L.M. Montgomery, you'll find more of her short stories on Books at Bedtime, including The Little Black Doll, The Gossip of Valley View, The Fillmore Elderberries, Jessamine and A Redeeming Sacrifice, all from the same collection.
Charlotte's Ladies was first published in 1911 and is collected in Lucy Maud Montgomery Short Stories, 1909 to 1922. L.M. Montgomery (1874–1942) and this story are in the public domain.
Hosted by clinical hypnotherapist and former paramedic Martin Hewlett.

This 10-minute guided meditation with morning affirmations for anxiety is a gentle reminder that the day hasn't happened yet. You don't need to solve everything before breakfast, or rehearse every possible problem before your first cup of tea.

🌿 Today's Morning Affirmations
You don't have to believe every word completely. Just listen, and let one or two become a little more familiar:
* I can meet this day one moment at a time.
* I do not need to rehearse the worst to be ready.
* I can allow my body to settle at its own pace.
* Calm is something I can return to again and again.
* Today does not have to be perfect to be good.
💡 3 Daily Caring Tips
1. Three breaths before your phone: Before the messages, the headlines and the demands of the day, take three comfortable slow breaths. Give yourself a moment that belongs entirely to you.
2. Choose one morning affirmation: Perhaps it's "I don't need to rehearse the worst to be ready." Take it while the kettle boils or while you're brushing your teeth. Let it become part of your morning routine.
3. Focus on the next small thing: When anxiety tries to drag you through the entire day before it has even begun, gently ask yourself, "What's the next small thing I need to do?" Not everything, just the next thing.

Books at Bedtime By Calming Anxiety - The Little Black Doll - By Lucy M Montgomery
Show notes
The Little Black Doll by L.M. Montgomery — A Tender Bedtime Story for Sleep & Insomnia | Books at Bedtime
Drift off to sleep with The Little Black Doll by L.M. Montgomery, a tender, bittersweet tale of love, sacrifice and an unexpected gift from the author of Anne of Green Gables, read aloud by Martin Hewlett on Books at Bedtime, the sleep story series from Calming Anxiety.
Little Joyce is an orphan, shy, thin and awkward, living with her stately Grandmother Marshall, who has never found much to love in a granddaughter who doesn't do her credit. Pretty, golden-haired cousin Chrissy is taken everywhere. Little Joyce is left at home. In all the world, only two things love her back: Denise, the gentle French girl who lies ill in the little kitchen chamber, and Joyce's most treasured possession, a small doll carved from polished black wood, found in an Egyptian tomb and said to be four thousand years old.
The whole household is buzzing about the great French-Canadian prima donna, Madame Lauren, who is to sing at the Harbour Light Hotel. Denise longs with all her heart to hear her sing the old French songs her mother sang to her, just one little song. So, while the family is out, Little Joyce slips away down the shore road, carrying her precious black doll in a box and a brave plan in her heart.
This classic bedtime story for adults is perfect for winding down, easing insomnia and letting a busy mind settle into deep, restful sleep. Montgomery's gentle seaside setting, a deeply moving and heart-warming ending, and Martin's calm, unhurried narration make it an ideal sleep audiobook for anyone who finds it hard to switch off at night.
If you enjoy L.M. Montgomery, you'll find more of her short stories on Books at Bedtime, including The Gossip of Valley View, The Fillmore Elderberries, Jessamine, A Redeeming Sacrifice and Uncle Richard's New Year's Dinner, all from the same collection.

• "The calm is mine. I made it with my own breath."💡 3 Daily Caring Tips
• One Breath at the Threshold: Every time you pass through a doorway today (front door, office, car), take one slow exhale. Treat doors as natural punctuation marks in your day rather than rushing through them.
• Leave One Thing Unfinished: Intentionally leave a small task incomplete today—a dish in the sink, an email draft, or a quick tidy-up. Prove to your brain that the world holds together even when you stop.
• Ten Seconds of Sky: Step outside or look out a window and look up at the sky for 10 seconds. It costs nothing and is the fastest way to reconnect with the world around you.📱 Take Calming Anxiety With You AnywhereIf today’s 10 minutes helped bring peace to your day, take your practice deeper with Anchored. Books at Bedtime By Calming Anxiety - The Gossip of Valley View - By Lucy M Montgomery
Show notes
The Gossip of Valley View by L.M. Montgomery — A Funny, Feel-Good Bedtime Story for Sleep & Insomnia | Books at Bedtime
Drift off to sleep with The Gossip of Valley View by L.M. Montgomery, a gently funny and heart-warming tale of small-town rumour and late-blooming romance from the author of Anne of Green Gables, read aloud by Martin Hewlett on Books at Bedtime, the sleep story series from Calming Anxiety.
It's the first of April, and fourteen-year-old Julius Barrett hasn't managed to fool a single soul all day. So when solemn, truthful Dan Chester rides by on his grey mare, Julius can't resist one last April Fool. He whispers some astonishing news: Adelia Williams and Young Thomas Everett are to be married in June. They are the very last two people in Valley View anyone would pair together. Young Thomas is a confirmed bachelor of fifty, Adelia a cheerful spinster of forty, and the two families have never been friendly.
Within days the story is everywhere. At the blacksmith's, the mill, the post office and even the minister's visit, Young Thomas is teased and congratulated wherever he goes. The rumour grows with every telling: a brown cashmere wedding dress, a hat with an ostrich plume, and then an actual wedding present arriving by express from a cousin in Minnesota. The trouble is, the more Valley View talks, the more Young Thomas finds himself thinking about Adelia's rosy cheeks and twinkling brown eyes.
This classic bedtime story for adults is perfect for winding down, easing insomnia and letting a busy mind settle into deep, restful sleep. Montgomery's warm humour, cosy village characters and Martin's calm, unhurried narration make it an ideal sleep audiobook for anyone who finds it hard to switch off at night.
If you enjoy L.M. Montgomery, you'll find more of her short stories on Books at Bedtime, including The Fillmore Elderberries, Jessamine, A Redeeming Sacrifice and Uncle Richard's New Year's Dinner, all from the same collection.
