Probiotics, Prebiotics, and Back to Balance
Show notes
We never chat about the fact that I actually manufacture and formulate a product! Yes, it's our Back to Balance Plus (B2B+) - you may have seen it around.
It is a synbiotic powder meaning it contains a probiotic and a prebiotic to amplify the support of each ingredient and we have sold out of it three times.
In this video I chat about the evidence and ethics around making a product as a dietitian myself.
Did you know- Only 16% of supplements are clinically tested for effectiveness and quality? The strains in B2B™ have been clinically proven in over 6 gold-standard, double-blind placebo controlled clinical trials.
We use ingredients with clinical efficacy. Our products are also formulated by dietitians with real life clinical and research experience - not just a panel of "experts".
B2B+ contains one of the most clinically studied probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum 299v for bloating alongside soluble prebiotic Fibergum® Acacia Fiber for sensitive guts & better, more predictable poops.
B2B+ completely dissolves in water making it easy to use and a safe option for the most sensitive guts. It also does not lose potency with high heat exposure, making it easy to use in warm beverages as well.
Gluten free & low fodmap. As of this year, our product is monash certified also!
Can you believe it - only 12% of supplements are 3rd party tested. Gut Love’s products are 3rd party tested at each stage of production - for quality, potency and to ensure what you are getting is what is listed - nothing more and nothing less.

Grains & IBD - What are the benefits?
Show notes
💙Grains & IBD - what does the science say as a whole? There are many research articles on grains but we need to look at everything as a whole to really gain insight into what the benefits are.
The recent study showing symptom improvement with removal of grains - needs to also be paired with the data we have on symptoms decreasing with time and their support with inflammation reduction and reduced disease activity.
In this video we have a well rounded discussion about grains and even share our personal experiences with removal and addition of grains.
Did you know you can watch us discuss this on YouTube too?🎊
In this episode we cover:
🌾 How the 'avoid' grains trend came about — and why not all grains are created equal when you have IBD
🦠 How grains impact your gut microbiome — and why cutting them out completely long term may be doing more harm than good
💙 How we personally navigate grains — because we live this too, and our approach isn't one-size-fits-all
🌿 Practical tips for reintroducing grains — the low and slow approach to expanding your diet without the fear
Whether you've been avoiding grains for years or you're newly diagnosed and trying to figure out what to eat, this episode will give you the clarity and confidence to make decisions that actually work for your body and your IBD.
Because you deserve nutrition advice that was built for someone like you — not generic wellness advice that wasn't made with IBD in mind. 💙

Your Q's: Fiber & "Forcing it" + How Intuitive Eating Can be Tough in IBD
Show notes
In this episode - we discuss your biggest questions about fiber and IBD.
💜 When it comes to you and fiber tolerance: We will want to know about the state of your disease - are you in a flare, where is your disease located and what your current tolerance is! That is always the starting point and we can build from there. Keep in mind also - there are many different types of fibers out there and different qualities with each that can actually be used to reduce symptoms.
🎉 Need a plan for your IBD? We just added an affordable option for people: https://crohns-and-colitis-dietitians.thrivecart.com/ibd-collective/
💜 We also cover:
Why intuitive eating strategies sometimes fall short with IBD
Just eating what you can tolerate can be dangerous in IBD
Fiber's important role in inflammation and symptom reduction💜 Here is what you asked.....
Would you recommend low residue or low fiber while in a flare?
What about eating food that "agrees with you" rather than forcing it?🎉 Want symptom relief? We created a tool for that:

Is Fatigue Normal in IBD? Or Something to pay attention to
Show notes
The #1 symptom with IBD is fatigue and while some acceptance is important - there are also so many nutrition connections with fatigue that we don't want to completely ignore it either.
The most common nutrition related fatigue reasons we see:
💜Not enough intake overall
💜Low diversity & antioxidants
💜Inadequate fluids or electrolytes
💜Nutrient deficiencies like vitamin D, iron, B12, folate etc
💜Nutrient deficiencies treated when low but not retested
💜Hard workouts without adequate pre/post workout fuelingIf you've had IBD for over 5-10 years - your sense of fatigue may even have become normal so it is important to still keep tabs on these things even if you don't notice fatigue in a traditional sense.

Is Fiber Ok In An IBD Flare?
Show notes
Is fiber ok in a Crohn's or Colitis flare? The answer might surprise you.
💙There is actually no reputable organization or IBD consensus study/guidelines that suggests restricting fiber in IBD as a blanket approach... in fact it's the opposite!
💙Fiber IS important to help support butyrate production (and inflammation reduction). However, it can trigger symptoms... which is why we want to get more specific with the TYPES of fibers we use and HOW we use them.
💙As dietitians who personally live with IBD and have spent over 15 years working with the Crohn's and Colitis community, we're breaking down the real science behind fiber, your gut microbiome, and why long-term restriction might actually be keeping you stuck.
🔥 What happens in your gut without enough fiber
When your helpful gut bacteria don't have an adequate fuel source, they produce less butyrate — the compound that helps lower inflammation. Less butyrate means a higher chance of inflammation and active disease activity.🦠 How low fiber affects your gut's protective lining
Without enough fiber, your helpful bacteria can't grow — and some may actually begin consuming your gut's protective mucus lining as a food source. This exposes the inner gut lining and can create an environment where flares are more likely to happen.😔 Why you might feel stuck on a limited diet
Sound familiar? "Everything is a trigger for me - I've been stuck on 5 safe foods and feel like I and can't add anything back." This is one of the most common things we hear — and can often be a sign that the gut microbiome is struggling from lack of fiber and diversity.🌿 Why adding fiber back — slowly — is often the answer
Ironically, the very thing people are avoiding is often what the gut needs most. We walk you through the "low and slow" approach to rebuilding fiber tolerance and why diversity in the diet is so critical for long-term gut health.💙 How Back to Balance Plus can help bridge the gap
For those who struggle with fiber due to symptoms and complications unique to IBD - this is exactly why I created B2B- specifically designed to support your gut microbiome without the typical challenges that come with adding fiber back in.You don't have to stay stuck on five safe foods forever. There is a path forward — and it starts with understanding what your gut actually needs.

In a Flare? 3 Reasons to Not Delay Nutrition Care
Show notes
💙 3 Reasons You Need to Start Nutrition Strategies During an IBD Flare Up | Crohn's & Colitis Dietitians
We know — when you're in the middle of a flare, the last thing you want to think about is food. Eating can feel scary, your symptoms may be overwhelming, and it can feel so much easier on the surface to just keep taking out every food that triggers you.
We have talked to several people recently that were surprised to learn that flare ups are when you need nutrition support the most.
As dietitians who personally live with IBD, we're sharing the 3 biggest reasons why you don't want to wait to start working on your nutrition when a flare hits.
In this video, we cover:
🥗 Reason #1 — Treating Malnutrition
Flares take a serious toll on your body. Between reduced appetite, food fear, and your gut's decreased ability to absorb nutrients, malnutrition can sneak up on you fast. We're talking about why catching and addressing this early is so critical for your recovery and helping medications work better.💊 Reason #2 — Treating Nutrient Deficiencies
IBD puts you at a much higher risk for specific nutrient deficiencies — things like iron, vitamin D, B12, and more. Left unaddressed, these deficiencies can make your symptoms worse and leave you feeling completely depleted. We walk you through what to look out for and why working with a dietitian during a flare can make a huge difference.🌿 Reason #3 — Getting Strategies for Symptom Relief
Nutrition isn't just about what you're eating — it's about how you're eating, when you're eating, and finding the right strategies and tools to help manage your symptoms while still nourishing your body. You don't have to push through a flare alone. There is so much we can do nutritionally to support your body, and we want you to know that it's never too early — or too late — to start.
If you've been struggling during a flare and don't know where to turn, this video is for you.
👇 Tell us in the comments: Have you ever worked with a dietitian during a flare? What was your biggest nutrition struggle?
📌 If this helped you, please like, subscribe, and share — you never know who in the IBD community needs to hear this today!

Red Flags In The IBD Nutrition Space
Show notes
Do you a red flag when you see it in the IBD nutrition space? Let's talk about it....
The cures, overpromising and the stuff that just doesn't land right. We talk about it from the perspective of an IBD dietitian and IBD patient.
We have seen *red flag* nutrition advice like
🚩 Promises for cures
🚩 Blaming the person for not following the approach enough
🚩 Calling fiber being "inflammatory" (fiber is not inflammatory FYI)
🚩 Encouraging fasting with those that are under nourished already
🚩 Overly difficult restrictions
🚩 A long list of supplements recommended that aren't explained fully
🚩 Encouraging a black and white mindset
🚩 Utilizing fear within marketing and guidanceAs patients - we have experienced this ourselves also. Have you experienced any of these? Let us know.

Low Residue Diet and How it Can Backfire
Show notes
Top reasons why low residue didn't REALLY help you....
Here's the thing - low residue is not recommended as an effective or helpful strategy long term with IBD and can impact your symptoms and risk in the long run.
In fact there is no reputable organization that recommends it for IBD because we have decades of research pointing to the importance keeping color and fiber in the diet when it comes to IBD for best outcomes.
Instead of taking more things out - when we work with our patients in a flare up - we focus on modifying gut friendly foods that trigger symptoms and focus on slow advancements in the diet.
Did you know when you take this approach - your gut bacteria actually get better at breaking down foods and symptoms can reduce with time?

Can You Actually Predict a Flare? + How we use Fecal Calprotectin
Show notes
No one likes doing stool tests... but you might learn to appreciate them after this video.
💩 Fecal calprotectin can be a great indicator of how things are going in the gut short of doing a colonoscopy and if you want to be proactive - you can even use the test to "predict" a flare and get ahead of it before it gets bad!
💩 A fecal calprotectin test can act as a warning signal for flares up to 8 to 12 weeks in advance.
💩 Fecal calprotectin is a protein released into the stool when white blood cells enter the intestinal wall - A rising or persistently high level indicates active mucosal inflammation, even if you feel completely fine.
💩 We use fecal calprotectin in our practice to understand better as to what's going on in the gut and if your symptoms are being driven by inflammation or something else.
💡It can be very helpful for both your GI and dietitian in terms of understanding what your next treatment steps should be!
We run this marker in our practice for patients and also do in depth nutrient panels to get to the bottom of what's happening and formulate a more effective nutrition treatment path.

GLP-1's, Peptides, Random Supplements & Things to Consider
Show notes
You might not think of GLP1's would be apart of the conversation when it comes to IBD, but we continue to see more and more people trialing them for secondary conditions with IBD.
In practice we have seen people often not inform their providers about GLP1 use - thinking that they do not impact gut symptoms... yet they very much do!
When it comes to peptides and other random supplements - when we are in a flare we are often more vulnerable to just wanting to try anything... but it's important to exercise caution and make sure what you are taking has good evidence and is safe.
Make sure to talk to your GI and dietitian about what's right for you. Also, if you find your GI doesn't have time or doesn't want to discuss your nutrition with you... we get the frustration. Yet, it's also often just not a top priority or within the scope of practice for your GI session (especially in only 15-20 minutes).
Quite honestly... there is so much to unpack when it comes to that topic... tacking it on as a question at the end isn't going to get you anywhere.
Plus... this is why dietitians (like us) exist!

Focus on what you can ADD in + Surprise new offer!
Show notes
Focusing only on what to cut out of your diet - might actually be making things worse. But hey... we have ALL been there too.
🍅And yet the conversation online is all about what to take out of the diet - and doesn't all discuss what we need to ADD to improve outcomes.
🍓Your gut microbiome depends on diversity, color and fiber.
🥑The very things that are often most difficult for those with IBD... yet... there is a path and a science to building tolerance with foods.
💪Think of your gut microbiome as a muscle - the more you support it - the more your gut gets better at fermenting fibers which means - LESS symptoms and more foods tolerated.
🥦That means your list of "no way" foods doesn't have to stay that way. And there is a science to HOW you add foods in that can also make it easier. This is one of many things we help people with.
➡️Ever wonder why everything you see online is so conflicting? First off it's not catered to YOU and where you are at. If you are wanting a customized to you plan and a place to ask questions at an affordable price point - we just created exactly that!
This is for those who are...
Want next steps & place to ask questions but you are too busy and want things to be on your time and at a low cost.... this is THAT.

Top IBD Friendly Foods to ADD to Your Diet | Crohn's & Colitis Diet
Show notes
The internet is full of conversation about what to take out of the diet with IBD... but nobody is talking about the things you can add to improve outcomes!
➕In our practice we always encourage our patients to take an "addition mindset" when it comes to their diet.
In the last 11 years of group private practice - people always leave us surprised at how many foods they thought they couldn't have but NOW can!
✨It's not magic... it's science and strategy.
.
.
Really Quick... Did you know..... You can watch us discuss this on YouTube too?
..
We have even built our own method for helping people expand their diet.🌈Many people think they have to wait 'until things are settled' to expand their diet... but it's actually the opposite! Diet expansion is one of the tools we use to reduce symptoms and induce remission.
🍵So grab a matcha or hot cocoa and let's settle into a conversation about our favorite IBD friendly foods.
We created this with you in mind - so you can let go of all of the noise and conflicting information out there.
As we share on this video - we have found that having an "additive" mindset is truly the antidote to letting go of the chaos and making sustainable, helpful changes to improve your IBD journey.
➡️Remember, if you do need help - we are here for you! We have freebies on our website (see below), e-books, and have just created The IBD Nutrition Collective where you can get a custom plan from us and questions answered!

Why We Don't Recommend The Low Fodmap Diet - The science & what it misses the mark on with IBD
Show notes
We do not use the Low Fodmap as a primary way to help those (like us) that have Crohn's, Ulcerative colitis or Microscopic colitis - in fact it can actually hold people back from experiencing symptom relief and even remission. In this video we will unpack that further.
3 Things to Consider Before Considering a Low Fodmap Approach:
🥬It doesn't address inflammation - an important consideration with IBD
🫐It's often done incorrectly which leads to more restriction, more microbiome challenges and poor response to medications (in IBD)
🌈A Low fodmap approach is meant to help you identify trigger types but doesn't explore the complexity of that in IBD and doesn't explore how to build toleranceWhen we work with people, we like to be thinking of dietary and nutrition approaches that have evidence for helping you:
⭐Induce remission
⭐Maintain remission
⭐Reduce risk of flare upsAND when you work with us, we will help guide you through that process and give you tools for how you can reduce symptoms without the frustration of an overly restrictive diet.
