Becoming My Father’s Caregiver: A Hospice Nurse and Death Doula Shares Her Story
When Nicole Heidbreder’s father was diagnosed with metastatic cancer, she found herself navigating cancer treatment, Medicare, Veterans Affairs benefits, hospice care, work obligations, and complicated family dynamics. Even with her professional experience within end-of-life care, becoming her father’s caregiver transformed her life from multi-dimensional to very narrow.
In this conversation with Donny and Noelle, Nicole explores a central truth: caregiving and healthcare navigation are two separate jobs, yet families are expected to do both without training or support. They discuss sibling conflict, advocating within the healthcare system, disagreements over treatment versus hospice, and the “Daughter Tax,” the emotional, logistical, and financial labor that falls disproportionately on women.
Nicole's practical advice on stepping into an adult caregiving role is:
1. Assess your own capacity before taking on everyone else’s needs
2. Bring in help early and make it part of the care plan
3. Connect with caregivers who understand what you’re going through.Nicole Heidbreder is a hospice nurse and INELDA end-of-life doula trainer. Her six-week live course, Navigating Family Dynamics at the End of Life, starts November 5, 2026. Learn more atgracefulfusion.com.
