Running on Carbs Podcast

Health & Fitness, Nutrition, Running, Sports

Running on Carbs Podcast is hosted by Coach Val, a wife, empty-nester mom and executive level professional who has a love and passion for helping other driven women pursue their own running goals and plant-based way of eating. We talk about everything running related from training for races to mindset to prepping plant-based meals that fit a busy lifestyle. There are no apologies for loving carbs on this podcast! Yeah, protein is important, and we’ll talk about that too, but carbs are our jam. Although, we do [mainly] focus on the healthy kinds.

Coach Val is a double certified run coach through UESCA and RRCA. She is also a National Certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Nutrition Coach that specializes in plant-based nutrition and a Correctional Exercise Specialist.

  1. Rowing as Cross-Training: The Machine That Dethroned My Bike

    Season 2, Episode 67

    Show notes

Ever wonder what that quiet corner-of-the-gym machine is really doing for people? In Episode 67, Coach Val explains why rowing has dethroned the bike as her favorite cross-training tool. She covers why it works so well for runners and endurance athletes: it’s low impact, good for zone 1-2 training, and builds the back, core, and posterior chain that runners often neglect.

Then she breaks down the three types of rowers (air, water, and magnetic) and shares why she chose the Merach RS3 Scull. She also shows how she fits a bike, treadmill, and rower into her small office, and explains how rowing fits into a weekly run schedule. Plus, a technique tip and her favorite YouTube rowing instructor.

Correction: Apparently, I have trouble spelling in this episode and completely butchered the spelling of s-c-u-l-l rower. Not skull. Hey, it’s almost Halloween here in the U.S.; let’s just go with it.
