A Silent War Within: Mental Health Podcast
Pull up a chair with Kevin, Jason, MaKayla, and Angel on A Silent War Within, an official 501(c)(3) non-profit movement dedicated to public safety and healthcare mental health. Built around an unfiltered firehouse table, we dive headfirst into the unseen battles faced by frontline heroes. We deliver raw stories, proven strategies, and expert insights to build real resilience long after the shift ends. We lean directly into the uncomfortable conversations, because that is where genuine growth and recovery happen.
Meet the Shift Team
Our table is held down by veterans of public service who have lived the exact realities they talk about every single week:
• Kevin Whitsell: A career paramedic, EMS veteran, and firefighter with over 20 years of boots-on-the-ground experience. Now managing critical transport and emergency logistics, Kevin knows firsthand the crushing weight of cumulative trauma and uses his own survival and recovery journey to advocate for those still fighting in silence.
• MaKayla Davidson: A 10-year healthcare veteran and expert Inpatient Float Pool Nurse. Having worked every high-acuity environment from the bedside to management, MaKayla understands systemic failures inside out. She is a fierce advocate speaking out for healthcare reform, patient safety, and radically improving staff well-being.
• Jason Meinershagen: A 32-year veteran firefighter and 15-year part-time 911 dispatcher. As a peer support coach and creator of Notes from Dad, Jason specializes in helping men dismantle trauma, step out of the mid-life drift, and ensure that their identity isn't entirely swallowed by a uniform or a badge.
The Strategic Blueprint: What We Unpack
Each episode is a raw, structured look into the real cost of doing the job:
• The Unseen Wounds: We give a direct voice to complex PTSD (CPTSD), cumulative trauma, moral injury, depression, and the unique anxieties that plague the emergency services and healthcare sectors.
• The "Adrenaline Fade": Exploring the psychological whiplash that occurs when a provider transitions from a high-stakes scene back into a quiet living room, and why peace can feel so terrifying to a dysregulated nervous system.
• Dismantling the Mask: Confronting self-medication, substance abuse, and the destructive self-sabotage that first responders use to build walls between themselves and the people who love them.
• The Home Front & Identity: We talk candidly about fatherhood, marriage, and how to stop giving the job your peak capacity while leaving your family with the empty scraps.
• Clinical Anchors & Field Tools: We bring on culturally competent therapists, trauma-informed clinicians, and tactical recovery experts to deliver actionable, evidence-based tools you can execute on the ride home tonight.
A Silent War Within is more than a podcast—it is an active movement to change the culture of frontline service. It is a validation of your reality, a sanctuary for your recovery, and proof that you can be an elite operator while completely owning your humanity.
You are not alone. Your well-being matters. It's time to end the silent war.

Initiative 99: From Pulpit to SWAT with Eric Robinson
Show notes
In this special Initiative 99 episode, host Kevin Whitsell sits down at the table with Eric Robinson, a former Baptist senior pastor turned 24-year FBI Special Agent and 15-year SWAT operator. Eric spent twelve years shepherding broken souls from behind the pulpit before stepping onto the frontlines of federal law enforcement—taking down drug cartels in Chicago, tackling organized crime, running high-stakes human intelligence, and confronting mass shooters in Toledo, Ohio.
Eric pulls back the curtain on his forthcoming book, Irreverent: From Saving Souls to Chasing Sinners in the FBI. Together, Kevin and Eric explore the "flinch test" of radical grace, the cumulative weight of staring into human evil, navigating suicide-by-cop incidents, how dark humor functions as a clinical coping mechanism, and how God uses law enforcement as an extension of His justice.
Key Scriptures & Theological Themes
• Luke 15:1–7: The Parable of the Lost Sheep — Jesus leaving the ninety-nine to pursue the single lost soul in the wilderness.
• Romans 13:4: Ministers of Justice — Law enforcement as an earthly extension of God's restraint against evil.
• Radical Grace vs. Legalism: Erring on the side of grace when encountering brokenness, addiction, and human trauma.

The Hidden Root of Frontline Burnout: Unpacking Childhood Adaptation with Dr. Adam McCormick
Show notes
In this episode of A Silent War Within, host Kevin Whitsell sits down with Dr. Adam McCormick, professor of social work at St. Edward's University and author of Healing the Helping Professional: The Unfinished Business of Childhood Trauma.
Together, they dig deep into how childhood survival adaptations like hypervigilance, emotional suppression, and the compulsion to save others create heroic crisis operators on shift, yet turn into the very poison driving burnout, rage, and isolation at home. Dr. McCormick explains why standard EAPs and surface-level self-care fail, how trauma functions as an internal wound, and how true co-regulation and connection allow providers to heal the human behind the badge.

Show notes
In this episode of A Silent War Within, hosts Jason Meinershagen and MaKayla Davidson pull up a chair with Rusty Myers, a veteran with over 30 years in law enforcement who rose to the rank of Deputy Chief of Police. After assisting in a routine foot pursuit, Rusty found himself falsely accused of a cover-up. Placed on administrative leave for 141 days without answers, he faced the brutal isolation of a system that put politics over truth.
Rusty shares his unvarnished journey from the dark night of the soul, where he quietly planned his own suicide, to fighting back, clearing his name, having his certifications fully restored by the state Law Enforcement Training Council, and eventually becoming an Internal Affairs detective to ensure no officer under his watch would ever face that same injustice.
Key topics covered in this episode:
• The Foot Pursuit That Changed Everything: How a routine call involving a rookie officer and a fleeing suspect spiraled into false charges of an administrative cover-up.
• The Deafening Silence of Administrative Betrayal: Facing 141 days on leave without departmental communication, losing institutional backing, and the psychological weight of isolation.
• Recognizing the Dark Checklist: Unpacking the warning signs of severe operational trauma, heavy drinking to quiet the mental loop, and how family intervention saved his life.
• Fighting for Total Exoneration: Navigating SLED, internal grievance boards, and the Law Enforcement Training Council where the Attorney General declared "This is not misconduct. Why are we here?"

Dispatched & Dysfunctional: Unpacking Critical Runs, Trench Syndrome, and Mental Health
Show notes
What happens when the sirens fade, the rig is backed into the bay, and the noise of a critical run stays trapped inside your head? For generations, public safety culture taught first responders to lock horrific calls in a vault and pretend everything was fine. In this episode of A Silent War Within, hosts Kevin Whitsell and Jason Meinershagen sit down with Chris Stockton, a 10-year EMS veteran, offshore medic, and host of the Dispatched and Dysfunctional Podcast.
Chris shares his unvarnished journey from his very first EMT clinical run, a pediatric cardiac arrest, to navigating high-stakes 911 calls and extended offshore medical hitches ranging from the Gulf of Mexico to Nigeria. Together, the team breaks down the subtle ways cumulative stress leaks into home life, why corporate EAP programs often miss the mark, and how peer-driven honesty is changing the culture of first responder mental health.
Key topics covered in this episode:
• The Imprint of Critical Runs: How early career calls, like pediatric arrests, create long-term psychological imprints and why 60% to 70% of calls stick with providers for years.
• Dismantling "What You Signed Up For": Why old-school "suck it up" tropes damage incoming first responders and how cumulative weight builds up over time.
• The Home Front Mirror: How trauma manifests in living rooms, why spouses and children are often the first to notice emotional shifts, and how to prevent family members from walking on eggshells.
• Transition Protocols & Grounding: Practical decompression strategies for the drive home, including Jason's "trouble tree" visualization ritual and barefoot grounding.
• Unhealthy Coping vs. Sustainable Outlets: Identifying destructive behaviors (substance reliance, anger, isolation) and replacing them with healthy outlets like podcasting, outdoor activities, and open dialogue.
• "Trench Syndrome" and EAP Limitations: Why traditional corporate EAPs feel like referral mills and why first responders open up faster to peers who have shared the trenches.
• Overcoming Comparison & Reaching Out: Breaking down peer judgment, utilizing anonymous resources like 988, and taking ownership of your mental health recovery.Whether you are an EMT, paramedic, firefighter, police officer, or dispatcher, this episode provides a raw look at what it takes to survive the mental toll of a public safety career.

Beyond "Suck It Up": Dr. Tania Glenn on Secondary Trauma, Moral Injury, and Responder Resilience
Show notes
When disaster strikes, most people run away from the wreckage. Dr. Tania Glenn steps directly into the chaos. With over 34 years of experience responding to some of the largest incidents in American history, including the Oklahoma City bombing, the Waco standoff, and the aftermath of 9/11, Dr. Glenn has dedicated her life to protecting the mental health of first responders, military personnel, and healthcare workers.
In this episode of A Silent War Within, hosts Kevin Whitsell and MaKayla Davidson sit down with Dr. Glenn to dismantle the traditional, often ineffective civilian models of therapy. She breaks down the physiological reality of operational trauma, explaining what happens when a responder's heart rate spikes past 180 beats per minute and sensory details become trapped in the frontal lobe.
Key topics covered in this episode:
• Why Standard EAPs Fail: The critical difference between civilian therapy and first responder therapy. Instead of unpacking decades of personal history when a provider is on shift tomorrow, effective trauma care focuses on containing the immediate crisis so they can operate safely.
• Intensive EMDR Demystified: How Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing replicates REM sleep to move haunting images from the frontal lobe into long-term memory. Dr. Glenn explains why 45-minute micro-sessions often leave providers in distress and why intensive EMDR yields rapid, lasting relief.
• Moral Injury vs. PTSD: Understanding the "woulda, coulda, shoulda" loop born out of high-stakes calls, floods, and line-of-duty tragedies where outcomes could not be changed.
• Secondary and Vicarious Trauma: The physiological cost of absorbing trauma from nursing care, dispatch calls, graphic social media feeds, and secondary exposure.
• Leadership and Organizational Trust: How leadership mindsets dictate whether crews seek help, and why owning mistakes with extreme ownership can repair agency culture.
• Practical Daily Resilience: Boundaries for phone and social media use, physical exercise routines, and gentle approaches for families noticing a shift in their loved one's baseline.Whether you are a firefighter, paramedic, police officer, dispatcher, nurse, or public safety leader, this conversation offers an unvarnished, compassionate, and science-backed roadmap for healing.

Show notes
In this special Initiative 99 edition of A Silent War Within, hosts Kevin Whitsell and Angel Deaton sit down with investigative journalist, ten-year firefighter veteran, and founder of Dark Horse Press, Therese Apel.
Having spent over three decades behind the yellow police tape, riding shotgun with U.S. Marshals, covering brutal homicide scenes, and fighting structure fires on the front lines, Therese knows what diesel exhaust tastes like and what secondary trauma does to the human soul. In this deeply candid conversation, she pulls back the curtain on corporate newsroom spin, the reality of complex PTSD, and the exact moment she realized she needed help after covering the horrific Brookhaven mass shooting.
Kevin, Angel, and Therese go deep into the intersection of mental health and Christian faith. They explore how cumulative operational stress is fundamentally linked to spiritual warfare, why authentic prayer means showing up broken and unfiltered before God, and how to hold onto faith when life feels like a constant storm.
Key Topics Covered in This Episode:
• Crossing the Line: How a teenage sports writer became a seasoned crime reporter, investigative journalist, and front-line firefighter.
• The Weight of the Tape: The cumulative trauma of covering high-stakes crime, the Corey Godbolt confessions, and the reality of secondary trauma for journalists and first responders.
• The Breakpoint and Recovery: Therese opens up about her complex PTSD diagnosis, her ten-week IOP recovery program, and eight-plus years of continuous therapy.
• Spiritual Warfare and Mental Health: Why mental health struggles and spiritual crises intersect, the dark reality of suicide, and fighting the battle behind the scenes.
• Faith in the Storm: Why faith in Christ does not guarantee an easy life, examining the lives of Abraham, Joseph, and the apostles who faced brutal trials.
• Unfiltered Prayer: Learning to pray without ceasing, dropping the polished religious act, and bringing your true, authentic self before God.
• Dark Horse Press: Walking away from mainstream media to launch an independent outlet focused on the unvarnished truth and protecting the humanity behind the badge.Whether you are a firefighter, police officer, medic, dispatcher, or supporter navigating a hard season, this episode provides a powerful reminder that you are never alone in the fight.

Protecting the Human: Dr. Derrick Edwards on Neurobiology, Peer Accountability, and Culture Change
Show notes
Nearly 75% of fire departments in America operate without a formal behavioral health program. In this episode of A Silent War Within, Kevin Whitsell and Jason Meinershagen sit down with Dr. Derrick Edwards: a 20-year fire service veteran, active AEMT, Licensed Professional Counselor, and founder of the Responder Health Lab at Tennessee Tech University.
Dr. Edwards cuts through academic buzzwords to explain what happens to the human brain and body under chronic operational stress. He breaks down why traditional EAP models often fall short, how "thing-ing" or objectifying trauma on scene leads to alexithymia and emotional numbing, and why mental health is directly linked to the top three killers of firefighters: heart disease, cancer, and suicide.
Key topics covered in this episode:
• EAP vs. Embedded Wellness: Why standard municipal EAPs fail public safety personnel and how departments can build proactive, culturally competent responder wellness programs on any budget.
• The Neurobiology of Trauma: How the amygdala and hippocampus process high-stress calls, frame rates of memory, and why responders resort to "thinging" people to survive the shift.
• Understanding Alexithymia: The three-pronged breakdown of emotional numbing (recognizing, modulating, and communicating feelings) and how social isolation drastically increases suicide risk.
• Burnout vs. PTSD: Why addressing burnout early as a "room and contents" fire prevents multi-room structural crises later in a career.
• The "Get Back Guy" & Radical Accountability: Defining true intimacy (vulnerability with trust) and why peer support must include calling brothers and sisters out when they are walking sideways.
• The Physical Cost of Stress: How continuous fight-or-flight activation drives systemic inflammation, cardiac risk, reduced antitumoral defenses, and substance reliance.
• Practical Recovery Tools: Driveway decompression routines, metacognition, functional mobility and yoga, finger tapping grounding exercises, and honest communication at home.Whether you are a firefighter, paramedic, police officer, dispatcher, or leader in public safety, this conversation delivers an operational blueprint for building sustainable resilience and protecting the human behind the badge.

Beyond the"Moody Medic" Mask: Mary on EMS, Emotional Dissociation, and First Responder Mental Health
Show notes
ABOUT OUR GUEST Mary Cass, widely known online as Mary the Moody Medic, is a battle-tested paramedic operating in the high-volume 911 system of New Orleans, Louisiana. Armed with an academic background in kinesiology, human movement science, psychology, sociology, and forensic pathology, Mary combines clinical sharpness with emotional intelligence. Through her relatable, raw, and educational content on TikTok and her work moderating the Medics After Dark Discord community, she has built a massive platform helping first responders drop their guards and process operational trauma. Mary is currently pursuing her graduate education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with plans to earn her PhD and open a specialized private practice dedicated to healthcare workers and first responders.
WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT
• The Origin of "Mary the Moody Medic": How a candid moment in an ambulance transformed into an authentic social media platform providing humor, education, and mental health support for emergency providers.
• The Objectivity of Pre-Hospital Care: Why high-acuity 911 EMS fits her cognitive style—providing immediate, high-level emergency interventions without the long-term emotional biases of inpatient nursing.
• Street Reality in New Orleans: Navigating high-volume trauma (gunshot wounds, stabbings, pediatric cardiac arrests) and why years on the job do not automatically equate to true clinical experience.
• Overcoming Pride & Embracing Humility: Moving past the need to always be right, accepting mistakes, and focusing on genuine human connection over social media metrics.
• Tactical Game Plan for Pediatric Trauma: How Mary prepares for pediatric cardiac arrests in-route—pre-calculating drug dosages, utilizing phone lock screens for Broselow references, and managing expectations without making false promises to families or trainees.
• The "Broken Machine" Mindset (Objective Dissociation): Learning to emotionally dissociate during a call by viewing a critical patient as a "machine that needs fixing" to maintain logical, unclouded clinical decision-making.
• The Second Half of Dissociation (Mandatory Debriefing): Why detaching during a call only works if you immediately bring it back around afterward—holding mandatory rig debriefs with partners and students to process what happened.
• Reaching the Avoidant & Angry Responder: Why explosive anger hides extreme vulnerability, and how to build trust through action, active listening, and asking: "Are you venting or seeking a solution?"
• The Failure of Standard EAPs: Addressing long wait times, session caps, and generic counselors who recoil at responder trauma, driving Mary's 10-year mission to build a specialized trauma practice for public safety personnel.RESOURCES & LINKS

No Fluff, Raw Truth: Cameron Swartz on EMS Mental Health, Toxic Culture, and Finding Your "Why"
Show notes
ABOUT OUR GUEST Cameron Schwarz, widely known across social media as the Mental Health Medic, is a veteran paramedic and licensed mental health clinician. After serving in the Army National Guard and deploying to Africa, Cameron landed in EMS by chance, serving four years on the street in both high-volume urban and rural systems as a paramedic and Field Training Officer (FTO). He later spent eight years as a lead EMS faculty member before transitioning into full-time clinical mental health counseling, specializing in first responder trauma, identity, and mental health advocacy.
WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT
• Accidental EMS Journey: How a pre-law student and military veteran was "voluntold" into EMT/paramedic school by mentors who saw his potential before he did.
• The Slow Fade into CPTSD: Recognizing cumulative post-traumatic stress—not from one single horrific call, but from the quiet morning ritual of sitting in a driveway with a 30-pack of beer after a 24-hour shift.
• Where the System Fails Responders: The stark lack of EMS-competent therapists in the mid-2010s, administrative silence during shift change debriefs, and the limitations of generic EAP programs.
• The Flaw of EAPs: Why standard EAPs fail public safety personnel by grouping high-trauma responders into generic government employee contracts without understanding responder culture.
• The "Musturbating" Trap: Breaking down the psychological fallacy of self-imposed demands ("I must do this, I should feel that") and replacing rigid expectations with self-compassion.
• The Trauma One-Upping Problem: Why peers must stop relating to another's trauma by sharing their own "worst call," and instead simply validate that the situation sucks.
• Identity vs. Purpose: How starting a career as a teenager without a clear sense of self leads to burnout when the job fails to meet unrealistic expectations.
• Calling Future Clinicians: Cameron’s direct call-to-action for first responders considering graduate school in mental health to step up and meet the desperate need for culturally competent providers.RESOURCES & LINKS

Named after the Parable of the Lost Sheep in Luke 15, Initiative 99 strips away secular excuses to focus on the truth: professional strength cannot save your soul, and no badge or uniform can carry the weight of human sin. This series provides emergency providers with a direct pathway to spiritual armor, confession, and true peace in Jesus Christ.
ABOUT OUR GUEST Clint Hatch is a 22-year law enforcement veteran in Mississippi. Over his career, he spent 16 years in patrol, serving on SWAT, working as a field training officer, and leading firearms instruction. Clint is the author of Keeping the Peace Within: Following Jesus as a First Responder.
WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT
• The Heart of Initiative 99: Grounding responder recovery in Luke 15 and the reality that Jesus leaves the 99 healthy sheep to pursue the one bleeding in the dark.
• The Dual Identity Trap: How growing up in church while hiding secret struggles created a split personality that collided with street trauma early in Clint's career.
• The Darkest Shift: Surviving a near-suicidal crisis two years into his career with his duty weapon in hand, and the intervening grace of God that saved his life.
• The Midnight Confession: The Holy Spirit prompting Clint during a night shift to go home, wake up his wife, and lay everything out in the light, beginning the restoration of their marriage.
• Physical Gear vs. Spiritual Armor: Comparing ballistic vests and duty belts to the Armor of God (Ephesians 6), and why tactical training alone cannot protect your soul.
• Healthy Spousal Communication: Learning how to let your spouse into your operational stress without dumping graphic details, preventing emotional isolation and bitterness at home.
• Therapy on a Firm Foundation: The role of professional Christian counseling when grounded on Christ as the primary cornerstone.Music licensed through Soundstripe.

The Emotional Suitcase: Mike Worthen on EMS Trauma, Flight Crashes, and 20 Years of Sobriety
Show notes
Mike Worthen is a 34-year EMS veteran and EMS Battalion Chief at the Nevada National Security Site. Over his decades-long career in Las Vegas and critical care flight transport, Mike experienced the extreme highs and devastating lows of frontline public safety. After losing six close friends across two separate medical helicopter crashes within three years, Mike struggled silently with severe alcoholism, trauma, and emotional detachment. On January 9, 2006, a compassionate encounter with law enforcement connected him to peer support, setting him on a path to 20 years of continuous sobriety. Today, Mike is an author, speaker, and advocate dedicated to embedding mental health operations and self-care directly into EMS training academies.
WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT
• Starting in Las Vegas EMS: How a failed college football attempt in freezing Utah led Mike back to Vegas to become an EMT with Mercy Ambulance.
• The Emotional Suitcase: Why first responders stack unresolved trauma call after call until the suitcase overflows.
• Tragic Helicopter Crashes: Processing the Flight for Life crash in 1999 and the Mercy Air crash in 2002 that claimed six of Mike's closest peers.
• Descending into Alcoholism: How lack of mental health resources and generational culture pushed Mike into a four-year downward spiral.
• The Turning Point: The January 2006 law enforcement interaction that offered help instead of jail, marking Mike's first real experience with peer support.
• Vulnerability as True Strength: Re-framing vulnerability not as losing control, but as regaining control over your life and mental health.
• Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs): How adoption at birth drove a lifelong search for validation through saving others on shift.
• Fixing EMS Education: Moving past one-page textbook warnings to build mandatory 3 to 4 hour operational mental health modules in initial academies.
• Why Traditional EAPs Fail First Responders: Long wait times, lack of relatability, and why departments need culturally competent trauma clinicians.
• Defusing vs Debriefing: Breaking down informal tailboard defusings within 8 hours versus formal 48 to 72 hour critical incident stress debriefings.

Kitchen Table Truths: Heath Meredith on Firefighter Trauma, Toxic Leadership, and Exit Strategies
Show notes
Heath Meredith spent 15 years operating in high-volume Houston-area fire departments as an engine operator, captain, ride-up battalion chief, and training officer. After nearly a decade as a captain, Heath made the tough decision at 34 to step down and restart his career as a rookie firefighter at another department to find a healthier climate for his mind and his family. He is the founder of Third Alarm Cowboys, where he travels the country teaching hands-on engine operations, bridging generational gaps, and fixing firehouse culture.
WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT
• Leaving the Captain Seat: Why Heath voluntarily stepped down from captain back to rookie at age 34 to protect his family and mental health.
• The Real Firehouse Stress: Why administrative politics, backstabbing, and corporate rot inside station doors break responders far more than street calls.
• Missing the Warning Signs: Reflecting on friends lost to suicide and realizing how trauma signs get buried when you are in the mud together.

Administrative Betrayal & Ground-Level Leadership with JP- The Passionate Leader (Part 1)
Show notes
Ask any veteran first responder where the deepest scars come from, and they will tell you the truth: the worst damage usually doesn't happen out on the street—it happens inside the four walls of the station house. It comes from toxic administration, leadership that manages through fear, and bosses who hide behind rank until good firefighters and medics simply burn out and walk away.
In Part 1 of this special two-part crossover event, Kevin Whitsell and Jason Meinershagen sit down with Deputy Fire Chief JP, a 25-year fire service veteran and creator of The Passionate Leader.
JP pulls no punches as he breaks down his journey from a 14-year-old fire explorer to surviving nearly a decade under toxic leadership, dealing with administrative betrayal, and standing up for frontline crews. Together, they strip away the rank, rip off the corporate masks, and address the hard-hitting realities of leadership, mental health, and identity in the emergency services.
What We Cover in This Episode:
• The Origin of The Passionate Leader: How working under "America's Worst Fire Chief" inspired JP to launch a platform advocating for line officers and ground-level leadership.
• Administrative Betrayal: The psychological toll of toxic management, ego-driven leadership, and being made to feel invisible for doing the right thing.
• Communication in Crisis (The DIMWIT Protocol): Using "Does It Matter What I Transmit?" as a tool for clear radio comms and effective crew leadership when tensions run high.
• The Myth of the "Fire Service Legacy": Why your title and rank won't matter two generations from now, and why your real legacy lives solely with your family and friends.
• Relational Leadership vs. Rank: Breaking down the barrier between titles and crew members to foster psychological safety, vulnerability, and genuine mental health support.
• The First Do Project: JP's initiative building a scholarship fund to bring affordable training and resources to small-town, budget-strapped fire departments.Note: This is Part 1 of a 2-part crossover. Be sure to head over to The Passionate Leader Podcast for Part 2, where JP flips the tables and puts Kevin (and later Jason) in the hot seat.

Initiative 99 Launch: Surviving First Responder PTSD with Bestselling Author Jason Sautel
Show notes
In Luke 15:4, Jesus asks a powerful question: If a man has a hundred sheep and loses one, doesn't he leave the 99 in the open country to hunt down the single one that is lost until he finds it?
Welcome to the launch of Initiative 99 on A Silent War Within—a dedicated monthly series stepping past standard mental health talk to explore the raw, unfiltered reality of faith on the front lines. This series is built on one truth: the Good Shepherd intentionally leaves the safe majority to pursue the broken, bleeding, and hopeless who are drowning in the dark.
To launch this movement, host Kevin Whitsell and co-host Angel Deaton sit down with bestselling author, speaker, and former Oakland firefighter/paramedic Jason Sautel (The Rescuer & All We Need Is Jesus).
For decades, Jason was the guy everyone called to save the day in one of the highest-acuity, most violent urban fire departments in the country. But behind national heroism awards and hundreds of lifesaving calls, Jason was quietly calculating the logistics of his own suicide—until radical grace stepped into his darkness and pulled him out.
🔍 Key Moments & Topics in This Episode:
• The Vision Behind Initiative 99: Drawing a line in the sand and opening up about how Christ pursues first responders at their lowest points.
• From High School Dropout to Oakland Firefighter: Surviving childhood abuse, street culture, and stepping straight into wildland firestorms and high-volume urban response.
• The Jumper on the Bay Bridge: Looking into the empty eyes of a suicidal man and recognizing the exact same darkness in his own mirror.
• Exposing False Refuges: Identifying the three biggest idols high achievers and first responders run to when bleeding out internally: work, relationships, and financial security.
• Identity Beyond the Badge: Surviving a career-ending injury after 26 years on the line and learning that your job does not define your worth.
• Sanctification & Mental Health: Why turning to Christ doesn't magically erase street trauma, but provides eternal hope and the practical tools of perseverance.🌐 Connect with Our Guest (Jason Sautel):

Surviving the Midlife Drift: Jason Bohler on Military Service and the 365-Day Rebellion
Show notes
In this unscripted dialogue, Jason pulls back the curtain on what happens when street-level adrenaline stops and the silent war within the mind begins. He shares his raw struggle with post-traumatic stress, detailing how the abrupt transition back into civilian life left him vulnerable to stagnancy, isolation, and an unhealthy ten-year reliance on alcohol as an emotional crutch. Discover the exact tactical framework behind his "365-Day Rebellion Against Midlife Mediocrity," a radical personal transformation that began with an absolute freeze on alcohol, led to a forty-pound weight loss, and sparked a functional audit of internal character weaknesses.
Kevin, Jason M., and Jason B. dive deep into practical field protocols for reclaiming control of a hypervigilant nervous system. The team breaks down actionable strategies for fighting cognitive negativity, including the profound impact of physical movement, early morning functional fitness, grounding techniques like touching grass, and the two-step present-moment trick to immediately break out of an anxiety attack or acute depression spiral. The hosts also confront the toxic isolation that kills veteran operators, mapping out the necessity of finding your "Second Mountain"—the intentional phase of post-service life dedicated to healing yourself by aggressively serving others in your community.
Whether you are a combat veteran, a frontline responder, or anyone struggling to level up past the shadows of your early life triumphs, this conversation serves as an operational blueprint for post-traumatic growth. Pull up a chair, ditch the doom scrolling, and learn how to run preventative maintenance on your own mind.
