Diabetes Remission Roadmap | Reverse Type 2, Lower A1C, Medication-Free Living, Weight Loss

Alternative Health, Health & Fitness

Are you living with type 2 diabetes…
But feel like no one is really listening to you?

Have you been told your A1C is “in range,” yet you still feel frustrated, weaker than you should, and stuck on medications you never planned to take for life?

Do you feel managed instead of helped — rushed through appointments, handed another prescription, and sent on your way?

If so, you’re in the right place.

The Diabetes Remission Roadmap Podcast is for capable, motivated adults with type 2 diabetes who refuse to accept “lifelong management” as their future.

Hosted by two pharmacists who’ve worked inside the healthcare system, this podcast exists to do what most appointments never had time for:

• Treat you like a human, not a diagnosis
• Explain why your blood sugar is high — not just how to medicate it
• Show you how strength, food, and daily habits can change the root problem

Each week, we break down:

• How to lower blood sugar without piling on more meds
• Why “A1C in range” isn’t the same as true health
• How to rebuild strength, confidence, and control
• What your doctor should have explained on day one

No hype. No fad diets. No shame.

Just clear, practical guidance from pharmacists who believe you deserve more than lifelong prescriptions — and who know remission is possible with the right plan.

If you want to feel strong again, make decisions with confidence, and work toward a future with fewer (or no) medications…

This podcast is for you.

Now, grab some earbuds, and let's walk this road to remission together.

  1. #76 – Are Carbs TOXIC? Two Pharmacists Respond. (Rapid Fire Friday)

    Show notes

    Are carbohydrates toxic?

According to one commenter on our YouTube channel, Brian and Cory are apparently too scared to tell people with type 2 diabetes to stop eating ALL carbohydrates.

    Their argument?

"Nobody needs to eat a single gram of carbs."

    And here's the funny thing...

    They're right.

Your body can produce the glucose it needs through a process called gluconeogenesis. You don't technically have to eat carbohydrates to survive.

But there's a pretty big difference between "not required" and "must be eliminated."

In this Rapid Fire Friday episode of the Diabetes Remission Roadmap, Cory and Brian tackle their first YouTube troll and a surprisingly important question about type 2 diabetes, carbohydrates, and metabolic health.

    We discuss:

    · Why humans don't technically need dietary carbohydrates to survive

    · Why that doesn't automatically make carbs toxic

    · The pharmacist's favorite principle: the dose makes the poison

    · How insulin resistance changes your body's ability to handle carbohydrates

    · Why water, oxygen, vitamins, and even healthy foods can become harmful in the wrong amounts or circumstances

    · Why some people thrive eating almost no carbs while others improve their blood sugar eating considerably more

    · How reducing total energy intake can improve metabolic health through different dietary approaches

    · Why we care more about your A1C, muscle, body composition, and long-term health than which diet tribe you belong to

And yes, we even get into a little debate about whether making your own glucose puts extra stress on the body.

    The bottom line?

    We're not anti-carb. We're anti-bad blood sugar.

If eliminating carbohydrates helps you improve your health and you can sustain it, fantastic.

If you can improve your blood sugar while eating lentils, berries, yogurt, or other carbohydrate-containing foods, that's fantastic too.

The goal isn't to eat as few carbs as humanly possible. The goal is to find an approach that improves your metabolic health and that you can actually sustain.

Fourteen years with type 2 diabetes.

    Reliance on insulin.

And now? Her doctor says she no longer needs insulin, and her metformin dose has been cut in half.

    How did this transformation begin?

Someone suggested she listen to a podcast while walking.

That podcast happened to be the Diabetes Remission Roadmap.

In this solo episode, Cory shares an incredible listener-turned-client success story and explores a concept he calls delusional optimism.

    Not pretending everything is fine.

    Not ignoring your diagnosis.

Not believing you can wish your way to better blood sugar.

But believing that your current circumstances don't have to be your permanent circumstances.

Along the way, Cory shares a ping-pong lesson with his six-year-old son, a surprising turnaround on the softball field, and why the stories we tell ourselves can determine whether we even give ourselves a chance to succeed.

    You'll learn:

Why believing change is possible often comes before having proof

How years of struggling with type 2 diabetes can shape your expectations

The difference between optimism and wishful thinking

Why small wins build the confidence to keep going

How building muscle, moving more, and improving nutrition turn belief into measurable progress

Why one bad blood sugar reading doesn't mean you've failed

Why diabetes remission isn't guaranteed—but meaningful improvement may still be possible

You don't have to believe you'll win every point. You just have to believe you're capable of winning the next one.

Maybe your A1C is high. Maybe you're taking multiple medications. Maybe you've tried everything and feel like nothing works.

That might be your reality today.

It doesn't have to be your reality forever.

  3. #74 - Gut Health, Blood Sugar & Weight Loss: What Actually Matters?

    Show notes

If you want early access to future episodes AND the chance to submit your own questions for Rapid Fire Friday, join us inside the Type Two Remission Room: https://tinyurl.com/3a4ta86d

You hear about “gut health” everywhere.

Take a probiotic. Eat fermented foods. Add more fiber. Buy a greens powder. Try an elimination diet.

But what does gut health actually mean, and what does any of it have to do with blood sugar, weight loss, and metabolic health?

In this episode of the Diabetes Remission Roadmap, Cory sits down with Elizabeth Aylor, a Holistic Nutritionist, GAPS Practitioner, Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P), Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, and kinesiology graduate. Elizabeth works with functional lab testing and has helped thousands of women struggling with gut, hormonal, and metabolic concerns.

And for Elizabeth, this work is personal. In her early 20s, she dealt with an eating disorder and multiple gut infections, including H. pylori and candida, experiences that ultimately helped shape the work she does today.

We start with the basics: What exactly is an unhealthy gut?

Because it isn't always just bloating, gas, constipation, or running to the bathroom.

From there, we dig into the potential connections between gut health and metabolic health, why two people can respond very differently to the same diet, and why blindly following keto, carnivore, vegan, low-FODMAP, or any other diet, may miss the bigger picture.

    We also discuss:

    • Why gut health is about more than taking a probiotic
    • Gut health, insulin resistance, blood sugar, and weight loss
    • Why Cory and Elizabeth agree that muscle matters
    • Protein, fiber, carbs, and pairing foods for better blood sugar
    • Keto, carnivore, vegan, intermittent fasting, and the diet wars
    • Why the “best” nutrition plan needs to be sustainable
    • Elizabeth's perspective on IBS and looking beyond symptoms
    • Why she wants people to stop buying random gut-health supplements
    • The danger of copying someone else's gut protocol from social media
    • Why feeling better on a restrictive diet doesn't necessarily answer why you were having symptoms in the first place

If you've ever felt like you're doing everything “right”: eating better, exercising, trying supplements, and your body still isn't responding the way you expected, this conversation will give you some new questions to consider.

Most importantly: don't get overwhelmed by all the noise.

  4. #73 - Rapid Fire Friday: Post-Meal Walks Enough, What Counts as Exercise, and Pasta Alternatives?

    Show notes

If you want early access to future episodes AND the chance to submit your own questions for Rapid Fire Friday, join us inside the Type Two Remission Room: https://tinyurl.com/3a4ta86d

Can walking for just 5 minutes after a meal really lower your blood sugar?

Does vacuuming, doing the dishes, or picking up toys count as exercise?

And is chickpea or lentil pasta actually better for your blood sugar than regular pasta?

Brian is BACK for another Rapid Fire Friday, and we're answering three practical questions that all come down to one bigger idea:

You don't have to do everything perfectly. You need to find the minimum effective dose—and then pay attention to whether it's actually working.

    In this episode, we cover:

Are 5-minute walks after meals really enough?
Why five minutes isn't magic—but it may be enough to get your muscles working and help with post-meal blood sugar. And if five turns into 10 or 15? Even better.

    Does housework count as movement?
Vacuuming, dishes, yard work, walking around the house—it all beats sitting on the couch. But there's an important difference between moving and assuming that movement is enough to accomplish all of your health goals.

Is lentil or chickpea pasta actually better for blood sugar?
Our favorite answer: compared to what? We talk protein, fiber, satiety, “health halos,” ingredient labels—and why the only way to know how a food affects YOUR blood sugar is to pay attention to what actually happens when you eat it.

Plus, Cory talks youth basketball, Brian returns from newborn life, and somehow we end up discussing our first-ever one-star review.

If you're overwhelmed by everything you're supposedly “supposed” to do for type 2 diabetes, this episode is your reminder:

Start small. Move more. Pay attention to your results. Then build from there.

  5. #72 - You KNOW What to Do for Your Blood Sugar. So Why Aren't You Doing It?

    Show notes

You know walking after meals can help your blood sugar.

You know you should prioritize protein, build muscle, sleep better, and make healthier food choices.

So…why is it still so hard to actually DO those things consistently?

Maybe you don't need more information.

Maybe you need to change the story you tell yourself about who you are.

In this episode of the Diabetes Remission Roadmap, Cory sits down with Dr. Kim Foster, former family physician, bestselling author of Redesigning You, TEDx speaker, and expert in identity-based behavior change.

After nearly 20 years in medicine, Dr. Foster noticed something fascinating: she could give the same health advice to two intelligent, motivated patients. One would transform their life. The other would come back months later frustrated that nothing had changed.

    What was different?

We dig into why statements like:

"I've always had a sweet tooth."

    "I'm not an exercise person."

    "I always quit."

"This stuff never works for me."

…aren't just descriptions. They can become instructions for how you behave.

You'll learn why jumping straight from "I'm unhealthy" to "I'm a health nut" usually doesn't work, how to create a believable bridge identity, and why tiny wins become evidence that you're capable of becoming someone different.

We also talk about what happens when the new identity gets tested.

If you keep telling yourself, "I know what I need to do. I just can't seem to stick with it," this episode is for you.

Your past may explain the story you've been telling yourself.

It doesn't have to write the next chapter.

  6. # 71 - How One Client Proved Her Doctor(s) Wrong and Took Back Her Health

    Show notes

“You can expect to have Type 2 diabetes in 10 years.”

These were the words our client, Kelly, heard from her doctor while she was working through a gestational diabetes diagnosis many years ago.

In this emotional episode, we talk with our client Kelly about breaking out of the A1C dread cycle and rebuilding confidence after years of being told type 2 diabetes is inevitable. Kelly shares the small, targeted changes that finally moved her blood sugar trends, built her strength, and gave her hope without extreme rules even after years of working with doctors and dieticians.

    Kelly shares her journey, including;

    • Fear, frustration, and the “threat of medication” shaping the patient-doctor relationship
    • CGM data driving anxiety without a clear plan to act on trends
    • Why “eat better and exercise more” fails when it becomes restriction and endless cardio
    • Stacking small wins: movement around meals, exercise snacks, and targeted strength training
    • Eating for satiety to reduce snacking and constant glucose challenges
    • Fasted workouts supported by hydration and electrolytes
    • Progress markers beyond weight: inches, energy, digestion, sleep, and confidence
    • Dawn phenomenon improvements and faster post-meal recovery
    • Handling surgery, illness, migraines, stress, and life events without giving up

If you have been caught in the undercurrent of overwhelm that diabetes can bring, we know that Kelly’s story will be a beacon of hope and inspiration.

  7. #70 - Rapid Fire Friday: Low Cholesterol & Dementia, REAL Statin Side Effects, and the Truth About Niacin

    Show notes

Join the Type 2 Remission Room, our online podcast community: https://tinyurl.com/3a4ta86d

Can statins cause dementia? Are the side effects really “all in your head”? And could you just take niacin instead?

Cholesterol advice online tends to fall into two camps: statins are lifesaving drugs everyone should take, or statins are dangerous drugs everyone should avoid.

The truth is a lot more nuanced.

For this Rapid-Fire Friday, pharmacist and metabolic health expert Austin Dudzinski is back to answer YOUR cholesterol questions.

    We dig into:

-Statins, cholesterol, and dementia: What does the evidence actually show, and why does how you lower cholesterol matter?

-The real side effects of statins: Muscle aches, weakness, fatigue, brain fog and more. What's legitimate, what's overblown, and what should you do if you don't feel right?

-Niacin vs. statins: Niacin can make several cholesterol markers look better on paper…but does that actually translate into fewer heart attacks and better health?

    - Better numbers vs. better outcomes: Why improving a lab value doesn't automatically mean you're healthier.

Most importantly, Austin explains why cholesterol treatment shouldn't be reduced to “statins good” or “statins bad.”

Your individual cardiovascular risk, symptoms, medications, biomarkers and goals all matter.

If you've ever been told you need a statin because you have type 2 diabetes, or you've avoided one because of something you've heard online, this conversation will give you a much better framework for talking with your healthcare team.

You may have seen him in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Law & Order: SVU, The Blacklist, a multitude of commercials, or on stages across the country. His most famous "role" is a listener of the Diabetes Remission Roadmap (ok, that's just our opinion) who took serious action on his blood sugar.

Ben shares how he turned around abrand-new type 2 diabetes diagnosis through simple food changes, daily walking, and steady experimentation. We talk through the real habits that took his A1C from 6.9% to 5.0% in about three months, plus the mindset shifts that keep the progress going with a busy family life. In this episode, we discuss:

    • Prediabetes and the “no urgency” problem when symptoms stay quiet
    • Choosing lifestyle changes before starting metformin and why that decision feels empowering
    • Low-carb eating with minimal processed sugar to improve satiety and curb cravings
    • Intermittent fasting as a flexible tool rather than an all-or-nothing rule
    • The importance of simple meals that fit real life
    • Using small wins and daily glucose trends to stay motivated between A1C checks
    • Building a better environment through what you listen to and who you learn from
    • Practical encouragement for anyone overwhelmed by a new diagnosis

If you have been struggling with a Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis, and have wondered if improvement is possible, you won't want to miss this episode.

  9. #68 - Can Taking a Break Actually Help Your Blood Sugar?

    Show notes

Join the Type 2 Remission Room, our online podcast community: https://tinyurl.com/3a4ta86d

Your blood sugar isn’t just reacting to carbs, it’s reacting to stress, recovery, and whether your body has enough muscle to store energy safely. From the outside, taking a week off the gym can look like “falling behind.” From the inside, it can be the smartest move you make all year.

We challenge the idea that more workouts always means better blood sugar and explain why a planned break can actually move you forward. We share how we use deload weeks, keep daily movement high, and balance training with travel, family, and real life. Brian also shares an exciting update from his personal life and it means for the podcast! All this, plus:

    • What a planned deload week looks like and when to use it
    • The difference between dedicated exercise and everyday movement
    • Why recreational sports and walking help but do not replace strength training
    • Motivation versus discipline and how to restart after a break
    • How to plan travel weeks without spiraling and what it means to “play defense” on vacations

If you have been wondering if it’s time to take a break from the gym, we know you’ll appreciate what we share in this episode.

Today we're tackling three questions that get people fired up online:

    -Are seed oils causing diabetes?

-Does saturated fat block insulin receptors?

-And should everyone be taking berberine?

Spoiler: these debates usually miss the forest for the trees. Blood sugar problems are rarely caused, or solved, by one ingredient.

A “money-back guarantee” diabetes program sounds like it should give you confidence… until you notice the hidden incentive: if you don’t hit your goals, they keep your money.

That question kicked off a candid discussion about why type 2 diabetes behavior change is less about finding new information and more about building implementation, accountability, and real support that leads to remission-level results.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • Why six weeks can be a misleading timeframe for A1C and medication reduction goals
    • The difference between information and implementation and why most people already know the basics
    • How “skin in the game” drives focus and follow-through
    • Why accountability is less about policing and more about hard questions
    • How low-cost fitness and health programs can rely on low engagement to work as a business model

If you have been struggling choosing the approach that gives you the best chance of success, better metabolic health, and a real return on investment compared to years of rising meds and complications, then this episode is for you.

“Start GLP-1 meds earlier” sounds like a clean, modern solution to type 2 diabetes. But what happens when that advice quietly assumes diabetes is “naturally progressive” and that needing more medication over time is simply your fate?

A loyal listener sent us an article about the benefits of starting a GLP-1 earlier in Type 2 diabetes. In this episode, we give GLP-1 drugs their credit while calling out the “progressive and inevitable” story that can keep people stuck in medication dependence instead of rebuilding muscle, habits, and agency.

    We also cover:

    • Why GLP-1 medications are some of the most effective diabetes drugs to date
    • Why metformin stays first line for many people
    • How cost, insurance coverage, and prescribing habits shape “standard of care”
    • What feels wrong about calling type 2 diabetes naturally progressive
    • Using medication as a bridge while building lifestyle skills
    • How sponsorships and incentives can bias health information
    • The question to ask if a medication disappeared tomorrow

If you’re living and dying by your A1C, your CGM average, or the number of pills in your cabinet, it’s easy to believe one bad day means you’re failing.

This week, Brian goes solo and shares his own health story, because the real barrier for many people with type 2 diabetes isn’t just carbs or willpower. It’s the quiet belief that you have to earn your worth by fixing your body.

Brian walks through how he went from being overweight and out of shape in pharmacy school, to “getting healthy,” to becoming so rigid that food started to feel dangerous and control started to seep into his relationships. Along the way, working as a pharmacist inside the hospital system made one thing clear: chronic illness is everywhere, burnout is real, and band-aid approaches rarely touch the root cause.

Brian shares his own Steady Strengthening routine right now, and why walking and rucking can be a practical blood sugar tool.,

But he hopes that the biggest takeaway from this episode is mindset: when your worth depends on a lab result, every setback becomes an identity crisis. When you start from the truth that you’re already worthy and loved, you can face high blood sugar as information, not condemnation and you can build habits without obsession, shame, or fear.

Ready to take control of your health and stop settling for “managed” diabetes?
Grab your earbuds and listen in.
