Excuses, Excuses | Part 1
Show notes
We said we weren't going to shame anybody this week, and then we spent an hour and a half taking apart every excuse we hear as coaches — including the ones we make ourselves.
Both of us had a week completely outside our normal routine. One of us was in Florida with the family, the other spent days at the hospital while her son had surgery. So this wasn't theoretical. Five days, and one lift. Here's what we actually did with that.
The list we work through in Part 1:
- "I don't have time" — the 30 minutes of scrolling, and why meal prep does not have to mean seven ingredients
- "I'm taking care of kids or aging parents" — the oxygen mask thing, said without the guilt
- "I don't like vegetables" — you don't have to eat the whole rainbow
- "I don't like eating my food cold" — and the frozen rice on the plane story
- "My kids or my spouse won't eat that way" — cook once, split it
- "I eat really clean and I still can't lose weight" — the olive oil, the ranch, the bites off your kid's plate, and the protein popcorn nobody asked for
- "I don't want to be rude when I'm out" — you don't have to explain yourself to anybody
- "Something unexpected came up" — what to do when the day is already gone
- "I'm injured" — a restriction is not an excuse, and our most jacked client doesn't squat
- "I'm too tired to work out" — energy feeds energy
- "I was good all week, I deserve this weekend" — restriction, binge, Monday, repeat
- "It must be my metabolism" — probably not, and here's what we check firstWe ran out of time, so the rest of the list is Part 2 next week. We also put each other on the spot at the end: the most outrageous excuse we've ever heard, and the excuse we personally used before we ever became coaches.

Natural Bodybuilding
Show notes
Two natural competitors, two moms of four, on what the natural route actually costs — and why they'd still choose it. No judgment here for anyone's decision about their own body. This one's for the people doing it without anything, and for anyone trying to build muscle naturally who's wondering why it's so slow.
WHAT WE GET INTO: • Why we stay natural: values, what our kids watch us do, and wanting to find out what we're capable of with no assistance • The diet pills and fat burners in college, the scary heart moment, and the decision that came out of it • Coaching athletes on PEDs: being upfront that we don't touch that side of the journey • Diuretics, and why a natural athlete never needs to step on stage dehydrated — you need water to look full • Genetics, the ceiling you can't train past, and the comparison trap with enhanced athletes on social media • Why we follow natural competitors instead — the ones that make you think "I could do that" • Pro cards as a natural: only a couple of routes in the IFBB, and playing the long chase • Building season reality: "fluffy", about a quarter pound of muscle a month, and recovering more slowly than an enhanced athlete • Injury recovery, peptides like BPC-157, and why naturals can't touch them if they want to stay testable • Mind-muscle connection, glutes vs quads, and why CrossFit athletes need to train differently for a different look • Cheating at natural shows, polygraphs, and the federations doing it right • How to handle a placing that doesn't reflect the work — "your self-worth is not one day of one judge's opinion" • Body dysmorphia, stage lean vs off-season, and the question we all ask: can I just stay here? • Bulking myths: you don't need to get fat to grow — building at maintenance is real • Why a natural prep may need 20 weeks, not 12

Fitness Through Parenthood
Show notes
Would you be proud if your children grew up and treated themselves the way you treat yourself?
EPISODE 16: FITNESS THROUGH PARENTHOOD STAGES
FitFuel: Behind the Check-In · Hosted by Ashley Downes & Jordan PoteetEvery stage of parenting is hard, and every stage quietly rewrites what "fitting in your training" looks like. We each have four kids, so between us we've lived it all: pregnancy, toddlers, elementary, middle school, high school and the empty nest. This episode is about how fitness survives real life at every one of them.
WHAT WE GET INTO
- Training through four pregnancies, and why recovery was completely different the time she kept lifting
- The pregnancy rule that actually matters: "What's the best I can do today?"
- Babies, toddlers, breastfeeding schedules, and why your support system is everything
- You'd never leave the house without packing for your baby. Pack for yourself too.
- Mom guilt, and the standard you're setting whether you mean to or not
- How we talk about our bodies in front of our kids, and why "I'm getting strong" beats "I need to lose weight"
- Elementary years: full calendars, lost family dinners and 5:30am Saturdays
- Fitness as a habit, like going to the grocery store. Nobody is too busy to do something.
- Treat your workout like a doctor's appointment. Don't miss your appointment with yourself.
- Middle school travel teams, meal planning, and cold chicken with cauliflower rice because it fits
- High school late nights, sleep, and splitting the load with your partner
- Empty nesters: why it's harder to move when you don't have to, and what's changed in the last five years
- The big one: you don't have to choose between being a good parent and taking care of yourselfFOLLOW US

Ditch The Timeline
Show notes
What if your biggest breakthrough isn't getting better at starting — but getting better at staying?
EPISODE 15: DITCH THE TIMELINE FitFuel: Behind the Check-In · Hosted by Ashley Downes & Jordan Poteet
Everyone wants the eight-week transformation. We spend this whole episode on why the timeline is the problem — and why the question you should be asking instead is "what happens if I don't quit?" Because it's not hard to start. It's easy to quit. The skill is staying.
WHAT WE GET INTO: · Why an eight-week deadline feels comfortable, and what it actually costs you · "What happens if I don't quit? What would I look like a year from now?" · Realistic expectations: a pound a week of fat loss is excellent progress — and why five pounds a month is not "nothing" · Why muscle gain is a different game entirely, and the number on the scale isn't the scoreboard · "I'll start after this vacation / after the holidays" — the biggest lie you can tell yourself · Surviving real life: vacations, Thanksgiving, holidays, and the week of leftovers · The all-or-nothing trap, and why you never need to "start over on Monday" · Why the 12-week prep mentality backfires, and how much cushion a real timeline needs · Keeping one foot in the door when life gets hard — injury, work changes, hard seasons · The identity shift: becoming a person who trains, instead of someone who "did" the program · Comparison, filters and genetics — why the Olympia stage isn't your standard · A marathon that got missed by minutes, and what happened six months later

Stop Majoring in the Minors
Show notes
NEW EPISODE: Stop Majoring in the Minors
"What fat burner should I take?" "Do I need to eat after 7 pm?" "Is my metabolism broken?" — we hear it all, and almost every time the answer is the same: you're majoring in the minors.
EPISODE 14 is live on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts, and we're going after the things people obsess over before they've nailed the basics:
Fat burners are the biggest waste of money out there
Starvation mode isn't real — metabolic adaptation is
Sweating doesn't mean you're losing fat
Waist trainers, lifting belts and sauna suits: what helps and what's a gimmickWhy program-hopping and coach-hopping keep you stuck
Your fitness tracker isn't a calorie receipt
The line that sums up the whole episode: you can't optimize something you haven't built yet. Don't get caught in the weeds.Full episode at the link in bio, or listen on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Burning Questions
Show notes
More is not always better.
Fitness culture rewards more workouts, more cardio, more intensity, less food, less rest — and then people wonder why they've stopped progressing. This week, coaches Ashley Downs and Jordan get into the part of training almost nobody wants to hear about: recovery.
They break down the difference between "I don't want to train" and "I shouldn't train," how to tell ordinary soreness from a nervous system that's genuinely asking for a break, what a deload actually looks like (it's rarely a week on the couch), how to eat on rest days without falling into the earn-your-food trap, and why the amount of rest you take between sets says more about your training intensity than your program does.
Recorded over Zoom, both of us sick, which felt like the right way to record a recovery episode.
WHAT WE COVER
Why recovery is part of your training, not a break from it
Soreness and DOMS vs. genuine fatigue — how to tell them apart
The signs a coach looks for before calling a deload
"Default days": showing up without chasing records
Injury and illness — when to modify, when to stay home
Rest days vs. active recovery days
Eating on rest days: protein, carbs, fats, hydration
Why you can't build muscle on 1,200 calories
How much rest you actually need between sets -

What happens after the goal?
Show notes
What Happens After the Goal — the post-competition blues nobody talks about.
Welcome back to FitFuel: Behind the Check-in. Fresh off competing in Tulsa, Ashley Downes and Jordan Poteet get honest and vulnerable about what happens after you hit a big goal — when the show is over, the medal is won, the marathon is run, or the weight is lost… and suddenly you're left asking, "Now what?"
This one isn't just for bodybuilders. Whether you just ran a marathon, finished your last season as a high school athlete, or finally hit a weight-loss goal, that post-goal "identity crisis" is real — and this episode is about how to move through it.
In this episode we cover:
Show recap — how Ashley and Jordan placed in Tulsa, and finding peace with the results
The post-goal "lost" feeling and why an identity crisis is normal
Growth mindset vs. goal mindset — "growth happens throughout your lifetime, not in short spurts"
Why you shouldn't drop your structure (or your coach) the moment a goal ends
The pressure of always being "the fit one" — and why it's often self-inflicted
Why stage-lean isn't sustainable or healthy year-round
Post-show struggles: late-night snacking, food guilt, and the "moral assessment" of eating
The importance of a reverse diet and easing back to maintenance
Why maintenance is often the HARDEST phase
Binge episodes — and why the real issue is usually under-eating earlier in the day
Building an identity beyond your sport, and finding hobbies outside fitness
Ashley's knee injury story and rebuilding after a "division-ending" setback
Choosing your seasons: planning life around what matters most (football games, family trips, holidays)
Give yourself grace, be proud, then put new structure in placeThe big takeaway: one goal ending doesn't mean losing yourself. Find the piece of it worth keeping for the long haul — and keep growing.

Bodybuilding Competition Day
Show notes
We're recording this one straight from a hotel room in Tulsa, Oklahoma — mid-show, glazed, tanned, and waiting on finals! 😅 Ashley Downes & Jordan Poteet pull back the curtain on what a bodybuilding show day ACTUALLY looks like.
What we spill 👇
🤎 The tanning process nobody warns you about (modesty? gone. 😳)
🥫 Getting "glazed" with Pam & gluing your suit on (Elmer's vs. gorilla glue 🤣)
🍚 Tupperware dinners, 4:30am wakeups & doing your own makeup
💪 Both of us entered the natural AND untested shows — the reality of a natural athlete going up against enhanced competitors
🎯 How judging actually works: call-outs, center stage & "conditioning"
🍯 The weird stuff — honey shots, resistance bands backstage in a thong bikini, and the fine line of eating enough without looking distended
🙏 The camaraderie, the prayers backstage, and why show day should be your "cherry on top"Ashley came in 4 lbs heavier than last year's best look — all that hard-earned muscle 💪 — and Jordan's finals? Too close to call. 😬
Thinking about competing? Our advice: go WATCH a show first, then chase it if your heart's in it. ✨

Meal Plan vs. Macros
Show notes
Should someone tell you exactly what to eat… or teach you how to build it yourself? 🤔 This week, Ashley Downes & Jordan Poteet break down the pros and cons of each — because there's no one-size-fits-all answer. 🙌
Here's what we cover 👇
🍽️ Meal plans — less decision fatigue, great for disciplined "just tell me what to eat" people
📊 Macros — more flexibility for real life (weddings, vacations, work dinners… life gonna life! 😅)
🧠 Why becoming dependent on a rigid plan isn't the goal
🔄 How to make swaps so you never get bored
⚖️ The rookie mistakes: not weighing food, skipping the BLTs (bites, licks & tastes!), and under-eating protein
🥗 "Never eat a naked carb" — pairing food to actually stay full & energized
📱 Pre-logging + single-ingredient foods = tracking made EASY
🍫 Yes, we still fit in our nightly Ninja Creamy 😉
Our #1 coaching goal? "Give a woman a fish, feed her for a day. TEACH her to fish, feed her for a lifetime." 🎣 We want to release you to the wild to do this on your own. 💪

Small Diet Changes That Make a BIG Difference
Show notes
🎙️ NEW EPISODE — FitFuel: Behind the Check-in | Small Diet Changes That Make a BIG Difference
"I eat SO healthy… why am I not seeing results?" 🤔 If you've ever said this, this episode is for you. Ashley Downes & Jordan Poteet spill the little coaching hacks that quietly add up — no full restriction required. 🙌
Small changes we break down 👇
🥗 The #1 hidden calorie culprit: sauces & oils ("Season, don't sauce!")
🍔 Why a salad can out-calorie a burger
🔥 Cooking hacks — air fryer magic & water instead of oil
🥜 The fat everyone underestimates (go measure your peanut butter 😅)
☕ Coffee calorie bombs & smarter creamer swaps
🍪 "Health halo" foods — a protein cookie is still a cookie
🚫 "Foods without brakes" — spotting your trigger foods & keeping them out of sight
⏰ Don't wait till you're starving — structure + a nighttime snack you look forward toPlus a peek behind peak week — carbs, water & sodium manipulation to bring a stage-ready look. 💪
The big takeaway? Most people don't need more rules… they need more AWARENESS. Make the foods you love fit — on purpose. ✨

Introduction to Bodybuilding & Readiness
Show notes
Everyone sees the glitz, the glam, the stage-day tan. 💃 But that's about five minutes of a journey that takes months. This week, Ashley Downes & Jordan Poteet pull back the curtain on what it actually takes to step on stage — and how to know if you're truly ready.
Bodybuilding isn't for everyone (and that's okay!) — but there's a takeaway in here for ANY body chasing a stronger, healthier version of themselves. 💪
Here's the readiness checklist we walk through 👇
✅ What's your WHY? (Hint: "I want to look good" won't get you through prep)
✅ Have you mastered the basics — nutrition, sleep, hydration, tracking?
✅ Can you handle sacrifice — and check in honestly with your coach?
✅ Your relationship with food (prep magnifies it, it doesn't fix it)
✅ Do you have thick skin for judges' feedback? "Work your weakness till it becomes your strength" 🏆
✅ Have you built enough muscle? (It's bodybuilding, not a weight-loss contest)
✅ The scale mind-game, water fluctuations & why you track a weekly average
✅ Divisions 101 — bikini, figure, physique, fit model — and finding YOUR fit
✅ Who should NOT start a prep right now (big life events, we see you) 💛Plus Jordan's recap of her recent OCB show, and the honest truth about post-show blues.

Fitness Myths | Part 2
Show notes
You asked for it — the myths were too many to fit in one episode, so Ashley Downes & Jordan Poteet are back to bust the rest. 🌶️
No filters. No fluff. Just the honest truths hiding between the check-in photos and the weekly weigh-ins.
Here's what we set straight this week 👇
✅ "Muscle weighs more than fat" — a pound is a pound (it's about density & body composition, not the scale) ⚖️
✅ Can you build muscle AND lose fat at the same time? (Yes — here's how)
✅ Am I too old to build muscle? (Spoiler: it's never too late 💪)
✅ Detoxes, cleanses & fasting — when they actually help vs. when they don't
✅ Why supplements are NOT a magic pill (nail nutrition, sleep & movement first)
✅ The creatine "loading" myth — do you really need it?
✅ "Muscle confusion" — your muscles aren't confused, they're adapting
✅ Fasted cardio, feeling the movement & why the right tweak beats a whole new plan
Whether it's your first transformation or year ten of hard work, you'll walk away knowing what actually moves the needle — and what's just gym-floor folklore.

In this episode, Ashley Downes and Jordan Poteet get a little spicy, busting the fitness and nutrition myths that keep people stuck. There are so many to cover that we're splitting it into two parts — this is Part 1.
We break down:
- Why you can't outrun a bad diet (and the truth about cardio)
- Spot reduction — no, crunches won't burn belly fat
- "Lifting heavy makes you bulky" — why nobody gets too muscular by accident
- Do carbs really make you fat? (Spoiler: it's water weight and glycogen, not the banana)
- Yoga and Pilates for "long, lean muscles" — what actually creates that toned look
- The truth about snacking and eating late at night
- Progressive overload, training to failure, and fueling your goals the smart wayWhether you're chasing your first transformation or fine-tuning years of hard work, you'll walk away knowing what actually moves the needle — and what's just gym-floor folklore.

Mindset First
Show notes
Welcome to FitFuel: Behind the Check-in — where fitness gets real. No filters, no fluff — just the honest conversations that happen between the progress photos and the weekly weigh-ins.
In this episode, Ashley Downes and Jordan Poteet tackle the thing that decides whether any of it sticks: your mindset. It's the topic that came up in nearly every check-in this week — so we're pulling it apart, from finding your "why" to letting go of the person you used to be.
We break down:
- Finding your real why — and why "I want to look good" won't carry you
Identity over motivation: becoming the kind of person who trains, sleeps, and eats well
- All-or-nothing thinking, and why one burger doesn't mean falling off the wagon
- Being intentional instead of restrictive
- Training around injuries, surgeries, and pregnancy instead of stopping altogether
- Delayed gratification — every choice casts a vote for who you become
- Comparison, social media, and competing against your own journey
- Setting a minimum so you always keep one foot in the door
- Why discipline creates motivation, not the other way around
- Ditching the scale-driven mindset when the number won't movePlus: the hardest weight you'll ever lose is your old identity.
Whether you're chasing your first transformation or fine-tuning years of hard work, this one will change how you talk to yourself.
