  1. What Gets the Best of You—and What Gets the Scraps?

    Episode 709

    Show notes

We say our health matters. Our relationships matter. Creativity matters. Joy matters. Being present for the people we love matters.

But do those things actually get the best of us?

Or do they get whatever energy happens to be left after work, errands, obligations, messages, problems, and everyone else's requests have taken their share?

In this episode, I'm inviting you to look at priorities through a slightly different lens—not simply where your time goes, but where the most alive, focused, present version of you goes. Because those two things aren't always the same.

  2. Your Energy Is Not an Unlimited Resource

    Episode 708

    Show notes

We're pretty good at understanding that money is finite. If there's $300 in the account, spending $900 is eventually going to create a problem.

And yet, we often refuse to apply the same logic to our energy.

We make plans based on the energy we wish we had, judge ourselves for not being able to handle more, and keep making withdrawals long after our internal account is flashing insufficient funds.

In this episode, we're talking about capacity: what it actually means, why it changes, and why respecting it has nothing to do with weakness. Especially as we head into a season notorious for asking women to spend more while replenishing less.

  3. When Your Life No Longer Fits Who You're Becoming

    Episode 707

    Show notes

There comes a point in midlife when the strategies, expectations, roles, and routines that once worked beautifully start creating more friction than flow.

Our instinct is often to assume the problem is us. We need to try harder, get more disciplined, become more organized, or somehow get back to the woman we used to be.

But what if the friction is telling you something else?

In this episode, I'm exploring what happens when you keep trying to operate from an outdated version of yourself—and the question that can help you distinguish between something that needs more effort and something you may have simply outgrown.

If this show has helped you think differently about your health, your life, or the woman you're becoming, I'd be so grateful if you left a review for the Grace & Grit podcast. It helps more women find the show. https://graceandgrit.com/podcastreview

  4. Finishing Strong vs Finishing Perfect

    Episode 706

    Show notes

Strong does not always mean pushing harder.

Sometimes it means knowing when to rest, when to ask for help, and when to give yourself permission to release something gracefully.

In this episode I challenge the perfectionism that drives so many women to abandon everything in the final stretch of the year, and make the case that finishing strong is a personal definition, not a performance standard. Strong might look like protecting your sleep through the holidays. It might look like asking for help with something you have been carrying alone. It might look like choosing one thing to let go of rather than doing everything imperfectly. The year you finish on your own terms, aligned with your own values and your own version of what strong means, is the year worth building toward.

  5. The Woman You Want to Be on January 1st Is Built Right Now

    Episode 705

    Show notes

Every January, millions of women vow to start fresh. And most of them are starting from a significant deficit.

What if the preparation started now instead?

In this episode I use the analogy of preparing for a serious hike. You would not sign up for the hardest trail of the year and then spend the months beforehand eating poorly, skipping training, and letting everything slide. Yet that is precisely how most women approach the new year. The version of you who shows up on January 1st is not created by a resolution. She is built in the ordinary, unglamorous, no-one-is-watching days of October and November. Every choice between now and then is contributing to who she is.

  6. The Comparison Trap Gets Worse in the Fourth Quarter

    Episode 704

    Show notes

Something specific happens at the end of the year that makes comparison particularly sharp.

The natural impulse to take stock collides with the curated highlight reels of everyone around you. And the result is a particular kind of pain that deserves a direct response.

In this episode I explore why year-end amplifies comparison and offer the most reliable antidote I know: an honest inventory of your own year. Not just the wins. Both the highs and the lows. I share that this year has contained some extraordinary highs and some very deep lows for me personally, and that holding both with equal honesty is what keeps other people's highlight reels from having so much power. Your real life, in all its complexity, is so much more interesting than anyone else's curated version.

  7. What Does Your Body Need This Time of Year?

    Episode 703

    Show notes

This time of year, a lot of attention goes toward what other people need.

What the family needs. What the gatherings require. What the season demands.

And quietly, without much fanfare, the woman who is often managing most of it stops appearing on her own list.

In this episode I redirect the question inward. What do you need to move through the next eight weeks with your health and your sense of self reasonably intact? What practices would you need to protect? What would you need to ask for? What would you need to say no to? The season will fill whatever space you give it. And the space you do not claim for yourself will absolutely be claimed by something else.

  8. Rest Before the Rush Is a Strategy

    Episode 702

    Show notes

In endurance sports there is a practice called tapering. In the weeks before a major race, athletes deliberately reduce their training volume.

Not because they are giving up. Because they understand that showing up to the biggest demand of the season at full capacity requires strategic rest beforehand.

In this episode I make the case for applying that same logic to the most demanding stretch of your year. The instinct when a big season approaches is to push harder beforehand. The smarter move is to pull back deliberately and build your reserves before the season asks you to spend them. I share how I apply this in my own life and offer a practical way to identify your personal race day and design a taper around it.

  9. How to Protect Your Non-Negotiables When Life Gets Full

    Episode 701

    Show notes

The season will expand to fill whatever space you give it.

You get to decide how much that is.

In this episode I distinguish between what is truly non-negotiable and what is simply a preference, and make the case that the former list is usually shorter than most people think. I also name the mechanism by which non-negotiables erode, not through one dramatic decision but through a series of small, reasonable-seeming compromises that compound into a significant deficit. And I offer the two things that protect against that pattern: clarity about what you are actually protecting, and the pre-commitment to protect it before the pressure arrives to test you.

  10. The Difference Between Coping and Recovering

    Episode 700

    Show notes

Coping and recovering can look remarkably similar from the outside. Both involve a pause in the difficulty. Both offer some form of relief.

But they produce completely different outcomes over time.

In this episode I define the distinction clearly: coping is buffering, reaching for something that temporarily alters how you feel without changing what produced the feeling. Recovering is addressing the source. Having the difficult conversation. Making the hard decision. Backing off when the world expects you to charge forward. I share what coping most commonly looks like in midlife women and offer the most useful diagnostic question I know for telling the two apart: am I feeling better, or am I just feeling less?

  11. Your Relationship With Alcohol Deserves an Honest Look

    Episode 699

    Show notes

There is something interesting about the things we have done long enough that we stop questioning them.

They become invisible. We cannot imagine life without them. Not because life without them would actually be worse, but because we have never given ourselves enough distance from them to find out.

In this episode I address the claim that alcohol does not really affect you, which is one I have heard many times over thirty years in the wellness industry and which the science simply does not support. I also explore the normalization problem, how something can become so woven into the social fabric of our lives that honest evaluation becomes genuinely difficult, and make a non-prescriptive but honest case for giving yourself enough distance to actually feel the difference.

  12. Self-Expression Is a Health Practice

    Episode 698

    Show notes

There is a particular kind of aliveness that comes from doing something that is completely, authentically yours.

Not a template. Not someone else's version of how it should be done. Not a performance calibrated to someone else's expectations. Yours.

In this episode I make the case that accessing that aliveness is not a luxury. It is a health practice. I share the contrast between what it has felt like to deliver work to someone else's template versus what it feels like right now, approaching a speaking engagement in Nashville that could not feel more fully mine. The physiological difference between performing and expressing is real. And building a life with more of the latter is one of the most health-promoting investments available.

  13. The Art of Saying No Without Explaining Yourself

    Episode 697

    Show notes

Most of us were never taught to say no cleanly.

We were taught to soften it, justify it, apologize for it, and wrap it in so much explanation that the other person barely registers it as a no at all.

In this episode I make the case that the compulsion to over-explain your no is not politeness. It is people-pleasing. And it is costing you more than you realize. I share my own practice of declining social invitations that do not fit my capacity without a paragraph of justification, and offer what I have found to be a clean, warm, and complete alternative. The version of you who can hold a boundary without apology has a great deal more energy for the things she is actually saying yes to.

  14. Finding Your Center

    Episode 696

    Show notes

Most of us treat feeling centered as something that happens to us when circumstances are favorable.

But what if center is not something you feel when things are right? What if it is something you return to regardless of what is happening around you?

In this episode I define center not as a mood but as a relationship with yourself, specifically the condition of being grounded in your values, regulated in your body, and oriented toward what matters now. I also introduce a framework involving three versions of yourself that I find deeply useful: the past self as mentor who reveals your patterns, the future self as the north star who clarifies your direction, and the current self as the integration of both. All three are available to you. And together they make the return to center faster, cleaner, and more sustainable.

  15. Regulating Your Nervous System Will Make Some People Uncomfortable

    Episode 695

    Show notes

When you start doing the work of regulating your nervous system, something interesting happens.

You feel better. You make clearer decisions. You stop absorbing other people's chaos quite so readily.

And some of the people around you find that deeply unsettling.

In this episode I explain why the friction that comes with growing into a more regulated version of yourself is not a sign that you are doing something wrong. It is often a sign that you are doing something right. The people in your life whose nervous systems have been calibrated to your old patterns will feel the change. Their discomfort is about their nervous system, not your choices. You are not responsible for managing it. You are responsible for staying the course.

  16. Emotional Hunger vs Physical Hunger

    Episode 694

    Show notes

We spend enormous amounts of time and energy managing what we eat.

Very few of us have been taught to ask why we are eating.

In this episode I explore the critical distinction between physical hunger, which builds gradually, is satisfied by food, and stays satisfied, and emotional hunger, which arrives suddenly, is often specific to a particular food, and is not resolved by eating. I share the emotional hungers I see most frequently in the women I work with: a hunger for time alone, for being truly seen and understood, for permission to meet their own needs. Food temporarily quiets these hungers. It cannot satisfy them. And the gap between what the hunger is actually asking for and what food can provide is where the cycle lives.

  17. Accountability Tools vs Self-Leadership

    Episode 693

    Show notes

The wellness market is full of tools designed to hold you accountable.

And most of them are genuinely useful. But there is something none of them can do. And understanding that distinction might be the most important thing about using them well.

In this episode I make the case that tools are multipliers, not foundations. A food tracking app cannot tell you why you are eating. A recovery monitor cannot distinguish between genuine rest and convenient avoidance. The women who get the most out of accountability tools are the ones who already have a foundation of self-awareness and self-knowledge that allows them to use the data honestly. I share the one free practice that builds that foundation better than any app, and offer questions worth asking before you invest in the next tool.

  18. Find Out Who You Are and Do It on Purpose

    Episode 692

    Show notes

Dolly Parton once said: find out who you are and do it on purpose.

In a world that constantly invites us to be something other than ourselves, doing it on purpose is a radical act.

In this episode I use Dolly's life as a masterclass in self-leadership. She was told early in her career to change the way she dressed to appeal to a wider audience. She did not. She was pressured repeatedly to use her platform to express political opinions. She declined. Decade after decade, in an industry designed to reshape people into whatever the market wanted, she remained distinctly, completely herself. That is not stubbornness. That is a woman who knew herself so thoroughly that external pressure did not find much purchase. This episode is a tribute to that kind of knowing, and an invitation to find it for yourself.

  19. What You Practice Now You Will Live in December

    Episode 691

    Show notes

Every year, millions of women arrive in January exhausted, depleted, and vowing to start over.

And every year, the same pattern produced that outcome: a slow unraveling that began somewhere in October.

In this episode I make a direct challenge to the fourth-quarter slide, the quiet permission most women give themselves to let their health practices slip in the name of seasonal busyness. The habits you are building right now are the ones you will have available when the season gets hard. Consistency with the fundamentals during October and November does not just maintain your health. It determines who shows up in December and who arrives in January.

  20. The Sleep Divorce and Other Brave Sleep Decisions

    Episode 690

    Show notes

There is a decision that a growing number of women are making quietly, usually without telling many people, because they are not sure how it will be received.

They are choosing to sleep apart from their partners. Not as a statement about their relationship. As a statement about their health.

In this episode I make the case for the sleep divorce as a practical, loving, intelligent choice for midlife women whose hormonal shifts have made shared sleeping arrangements consistently disruptive. I challenge the story that sleeping apart means something is wrong, and offer two words that remove the weight of permanence from the decision entirely: for now. For now is a complete sentence. And it might save both your health and your relationship.
