50 | These Nutrients Ease Insulin Resistance & Boost Metabolism
Show notes
Eating more veggies, adding protein at breakfast, cutting back on night snacking, and your weight still won't budge? Could missing nutrients be the reason your metabolism isn't responding?
Eating so much better but still craving sugar every afternoon? Could insulin resistance be draining the magnesium, chromium, and zinc your body needs to keep blood sugar steady?
Bloating, heartburn, or that heavy, too-full feeling after meals? Is it really "just how your stomach is," or is your gut keeping good nutrients from ever reaching your cells?
In this episode, I'm sharing why eating better isn't always enough when insulin resistance is quietly draining the nutrients your metabolism needs most, so you can stop asking "what is wrong with me?" and start giving your body what it can actually use. I share how years of living with IBD taught me to make food my medicine, and why your gut gets a vote in how much of your plate makes it to your cells. Then we talk about the leaky-bucket cycle between insulin resistance and your minerals, and why inflamed cells have a hard time hearing insulin. It's not just what you eat, friend. It's what your body can use.
What You'll Learn:
• Why food always comes first, and why a pill can't copy the whole team of nutrients you get from real food
• How your gut works like a doorway, and why bloating, heartburn, or heaviness after meals are signals worth listening to
• The leaky-bucket cycle: how high blood sugar and insulin can drain minerals, and how low minerals make insulin resistance worse
• What magnesium, chromium, and zinc each do for insulin, plus the whole foods where you'll find them
• Why that afternoon sugar craving may be your body talking, not a willpower problem
• How inflammation keeps your cells from hearing insulin, and why omega-3 DHA from fatty fish can help calm things down
• An easy two-minute swap to cut one hidden source of processed oils
• Where supplements fit: the helper, not the foundation
• Three small next steps you can start this weekInsulin Insight for Midlife Weight Loss — Stuck with stubborn midlife middle and low energy? Join the waitlist for Insulin Insight for Midlife Weight Loss: 👉🏼 https://www.mendmymetabolism.com/insulin

49 | Gain It Back? 90-Day Insulin Resistance & Blood Sugar Plan
Show notes
Afraid apple cider donuts, Thanksgiving pie, and Christmas cookies will undo all your insulin resistance progress by January?
Do you feel sleepy, sweaty, or hungry again a few hours after a big holiday meal? Those could be signs of a blood sugar spike, even without a CGM.
Can you really lose weight through the holidays in midlife and keep your blood sugar levels steady, without being the weird one at the table who says no to everything?
In this episode, I'm sharing why one holiday meal is never the real problem with insulin resistance, so you can enjoy this season and still walk into January feeling good. I tell you about our upcoming trip to see our daughters in Tennessee, and the gluten-free apple cider donuts that tempt me every fall (side note: gluten free doesn't mean sugar free). Then we do some quick math. From now until New Year's is about 90 days. Maybe 10 or 12 of those are big food days. The other 80 are normal days, and those are the days that decide where you land. Friend, this isn't a license to go hogwild. It's an invitation to give yourself grace and honor your body at the very next meal.
What You'll Learn:
• Why your normal days, not Thanksgiving or Christmas, decide where your blood sugar levels and weight land in January
• How all-or-nothing thinking turns one donut into six weeks off track, and why insulin resistance makes that cost more in midlife
• What a healthy blood sugar spike looks like (hint: zero spikes is not the goal)
• The body clues that your blood sugar went high and dropped fast, no CGM needed (yes, some of those hot flashes might be blood sugar)
• How eating order, dessert timing, and holiday stress and cortisol change your spike at a big meal
• How to pick 2 or 3 anchor habits and plan your bounce-back so the very next meal goes back to normal
• Why a few minutes of Burst & Burn after a big meal helps your muscles pull sugar out of your blood
• Three simple next steps to protect your normal Tuesdays through the holidaysInsulin Insight for Midlife Weight Loss — Build a personalized weight loss program using your own blood sugar data: 👉🏼 https://www.mendmymetabolism.com/insulin

48 | Insulin Resistance? My Water Rules for Steady Blood Sugar
Show notes
Think coffee counts as water? Could not drinking enough water be quietly raising your blood sugar levels and making it harder to lose weight in midlife?
Standing in the pantry at 3 PM with a headache, not even sure what you're looking for? Is it really hunger, or could thirst and cortisol be behind that afternoon snack attack?
Doing everything right for insulin resistance and your metabolism, but still feeling tired and foggy by mid-afternoon? What if the missing piece is a glass of water before you eat?
In this episode, I'm sharing how dehydration can push your blood sugar levels higher, how to tell hunger from thirst, and a simple water rhythm that fits right around your meals, so you can stop blaming your body and start giving it what it's been asking for. I tell you about the rushed morning my own fasting labs showed I was dehydrated (yes, even a pharmacist forgets her water bottle). Then we talk about why your thirst signal gets quieter in midlife, and how three cups of coffee can slowly push water right out of your day. This is information, not judgment, friend. So grab a glass and fill it up.
What You'll Learn: Why less water can make your blood sugar levels read higher, explained with a simple sugar-in-a-pitcher picture How the hormone that helps you hold on to water can also nudge your liver to release more sugar Why your thirst signal gets quieter as you get older, and what happens when coffee takes the place of water The "drink first, then decide" test for telling hunger from thirst, and how cortisol makes those signals harder to read How drinking water 30 to 60 minutes before meals can help you feel fuller and support weight loss A simple way to find your starting daily water goal, plus when to check with your doctor first

47 | How to Build a Personalized Weight Loss Plan: Sneak Peek Inside Insulin Insight
Show notes
Wondering if a CGM device is worth it, or if finger pokes with a glucometer tell you enough about your blood sugar?
Curious what it's really like inside a group coaching program for midlife weight loss before you say yes?
Doing everything "right" in midlife and the weight still won't come off, no matter how hard you try?
Today's episode is a little different, friend. I'm not teaching solo. I'm joined by my dear friend Alejandra Kottke, our new Business Support Specialist here at Mend Your Midlife Metabolism. But before she ever worked with me, she was a student in the very first round of Insulin Insight for Midlife Weight Loss two years ago, back when we tracked blood sugar with a glucometer and finger pokes. Now she's back in the newly designed program, building her personalized weight loss plan with a continuous glucose monitor. That gives her a perspective nobody else on this podcast can offer. She shares what a normal day of finger-prick testing looked like, what a CGM showed her that a glucometer never could, and what it feels like to do this work alongside other women on live coaching calls. If you've been on the fence about using a CGM, or wondering whether a program like this is right for you, this honest, inside look is for you.
What You'll Learn:
• Why Alejandra said yes to joining Insulin Insight the first time, and why she came back
• What a normal day of blood sugar testing looked like with a glucometer, and what made it so hard
• The real difference between finger pokes and a CGM device, and a moment the CGM revealed something a finger prick never could
• What she'd tell a woman who feels unsure about a CGM because of cost, nerves, or "one more thing"
• What the group coaching calls actually feel like if you've never been on one
• The non-scale victories and early wins she's noticed a few weeks into the program
• Why this approach stood out to a lifelong learner who has seen a hundred weight loss programs come and go
• Her heartfelt message to the woman listening who is still on the fenceFinally Losing It Bootcamp: If you've been doing everything "right" and the weight still won't come off, it's not a lack of effort, it's a lack of information. 46 | Confidence After 50: What Getting Your Metabolism Back Actually Feels Like
Episode 3
Show notes
Do you look in the mirror after 50 and feel like you're looking at a stranger?
Wondering if this tired, low-confidence version of you is just who you are now?
Could your metabolism be the reason your confidence slipped away in midlife?
In this episode, I'm sharing what getting your confidence back after 50 actually feels like, so you can stop blaming yourself and start feeling at home in your body again. Nothing dramatic happened. The energy went first. Then the midlife middle showed up and the jeans got harder to button. Then your confidence quietly followed. Friend, you are not broken, and this is not your fault. As estrogen shifts, insulin resistance and cortisol change how your body handles blood sugar, energy, and fat. That's a chemistry change, not a personality change. And chemistry problems have solutions.
In this episode, you'll learn:
• Why confidence in midlife is tied to steady energy, clear thinking, and your metabolism
• How shifting estrogen, insulin resistance, and cortisol can make you feel like a different person
• Why this is a data problem you can solve, not a willpower problem you're failing at
• The non-scale victories that show up first: quieter food noise, steady afternoon energy, better sleep, and not flinching at your reflection
• How a CGM lets you watch your own blood sugar respond in real time, so you stop guessing
• Why courage comes before confidence, inspired by Jennifer Allwood's book "Fear Is Not the Boss of You"
• Three simple next steps to start feeling like yourself againFinally Losing It Bootcamp: Join me for a FREE one hour LIVE Workshop on October 14th. 45 | What a CGM Device Reveals About Your Carb Tolerance and Blood Sugar Levels
Show notes
Ever wonder how many carbs you should really be eating in midlife — and why the low carb plan that worked for your friend doesn't work for you?
Could eating a cup of "healthy" blueberries actually spike your blood sugar? Here's what my CGM taught me about carb tolerance.
What if two women ate the exact same meal and got two completely different blood sugar results? Here's how to find your own personalized carb number for insulin resistance.
In this episode, I'm sharing why there is no single "right" number of carbs for every midlife woman, and how paying attention to your own blood sugar can help you find the amount that actually works for your body. I share the story of a blueberry smoothie I thought was healthy, until my CGM told me a different story, and I walk you through simple, no-guesswork steps you can try this week to start finding your own carb tolerance.
What You'll Learn:
Why there is no universal carb number that works for every woman in midlife
Why two women can eat the exact same meal and walk away with completely different blood sugar responses
How to use your own body's signals, with or without a CGM, to find your personal carb tolerance
A simple step you can try this week to start noticing your own blood sugar pattern

44 | Turn Your Thighs Into Belly Fat: What Stress Is Really Doing to Your Body
Show notes
Ever wonder why your belly keeps growing even though you're eating less than ever — could unmanaged stress be the real reason you can't lose weight in midlife?
What does turning your thigh muscle into belly fat actually have to do with cortisol belly — and why does it happen without you eating a single extra bite?
Could sitting through a stressful moment instead of moving be the missing link between stress and belly fat, blood sugar, and insulin resistance?
In this episode, I'm walking you through exactly what happens in your body when stress hits and you don't move — from cortisol pulling sugar out of your muscle, to that sugar sitting unused in your blood, to insulin storing it right around your middle. No willpower failure here. Just biochemistry, and a simple fix you can start using today.
What You'll Learn:
• Why cortisol pulls fuel from your muscle instead of fat during a stressful moment, and why that matters for your midlife middle
• How sitting still under stress lets that extra sugar sit in your blood with nowhere to go
• Why insulin resistance means your pancreas has to make more insulin — and why that extra insulin stores sugar as belly fat
• The full stress-to-belly-fat pattern, start to finish, in plain terms
• Why "exercise snacking" — short bursts of movement throughout the day — can control blood sugar better than one long workout
• Simple ways to move before insulin gets the chance to store that sugar as fatInsulin Insight for Midlife Weight Loss — Build a personalized weight loss program using your own blood sugar data: 👉🏼 https://www.mendmymetabolism.com/insulin

43 | What's Working for My Metabolism This Month
Show notes
Ever wonder if a long, hard fast could actually be working against you — spiking your cortisol instead of helping you lose weight in midlife?
What if the real reason your blood sugar won't settle down has nothing to do with willpower, and everything to do with what you do in the first hour after you wake up?
Could twenty minutes of embroidery before bed do more for your blood sugar than your next diet ever will?
This episode is a little different — no teaching outline, no myth to bust. Just a real, honest look at what's actually working for Carrie this month: three small shifts, no overhauls, no rigid plans. If you're tired of trying harder and still not seeing the scale move, this one's for you.
What You'll Learn:
• Why 20–30 grams of protein in the first hour of waking can help steady your cortisol and support how your body uses insulin
• What the Cortisol Awakening Response is, and why low blood sugar can make that morning surge worse
• A simple trick for keeping dinner interesting without falling back on the same five meals
• Why black beans and lentils can be blood-sugar-friendly allies instead of something to fear
• How a calm, screen-free evening routine (embroidery, puzzles, fiction) can lower cortisol and support steadier blood sugar the next day
• Why small, sustainable shifts — not big overhauls — are what actually move the needle in midlifeInsulin Insight for Midlife Weight Loss — Build a personalized weight loss program using your own blood sugar data: 👉🏼 https://www.mendmymetabolism.com/insulin

You know a walk would feel good, some part of you even wants to go — so why does your body stay planted on the couch instead?
Doing everything right and the weight still won't budge — could a hormone called leptin be the missing piece behind your blood sugar and insulin resistance struggles?
In this episode, I'm sharing why your cravings and your missing motivation to move might be the exact same hormone problem — leptin resistance — so you can stop blaming willpower and start working with your biochemistry instead.
What You'll Learn:
• What leptin actually does in your body, and why it's your built-in "I've had enough" signal for both food and movement
• How chronically high insulin blocks leptin from reaching your brain, and why that leaves you craving food you never even wanted
• Why insulin resistance and leptin resistance tend to travel together, especially as estrogen and progesterone shift during perimenopause and menopause
• The real reason "slow metabolism" often isn't about your metabolism at all — it's spontaneous movement quietly disappearing from your day

Ever wonder why a "healthy" flavored yogurt or bottled salad dressing might be quietly feeding inflammation and stalling your midlife weight loss?
Hitting a wall every afternoon around three o'clock no matter what you ate for lunch — could cortisol and your blood sugar levels be behind that crash?

What You'll Learn:
• Why swollen joints, brain fog, and skin that won't bounce back are signs of inflammation, not just age
• How dropping estrogen during menopause changes the way your body handles inflammation and blood sugar
• Why insulin has to work harder to "unlock" your cells when inflammation is high, and what that has to do with your 3pm energy crash
• Where sugar hides in foods that don't taste sweet, and why that matters more in midlife than it used to

Carrie breaks down why "enough hours" isn't the same as good sleep, why your blood sugar is still working the night shift while you rest, and why you can't out-sleep a rough week by catching up on the weekend. It's not a willpower problem — it's a blood sugar and cortisol problem, and once you see the pattern, you can start to shift it.
What You'll Learn:
• Why two women can both sleep eight hours and wake up completely differently
• How your blood sugar keeps working while you're asleep, and why it can pull you out of deep, restorative sleep
• Why weekend sleep-ins don't undo a week of poor-quality sleep
• Simple signs your body is giving you — like waking at 2 or 3am, or afternoon crashes — that point to a blood sugar pattern, not a personal failure
• One small change you can make tonight to give your body a real shot at deep sleepCome tell us what your mornings have been looking like in the free private Facebook group for Midlife Menders navigating metabolism, insulin resistance, and stubborn midlife weight: Insulin Resistance and Midlife Metabolism Guidance For Women Community 👉🏼 https://www.facebook.com/groups/mendingyourmidlifemetabolism

38 | Weight Loss in Midlife Starts With a CGM Device
Show notes
Ever wonder why the exact same plate of food hits your blood sugar differently now than it did in your 30s?
Tired of counting calories and macros only to watch the scale refuse to budge?
What if a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) could finally show you insulin resistance in action — meal by meal, night by night?
This episode breaks down why calorie counting was never the full story on midlife weight loss. We walk through what actually happens in your body when insulin resistance takes hold in midlife, why the same 500 calories can trigger two completely different hormonal responses, and how a continuous glucose monitor replaces guesswork with your own real, personal data — from meals to sleep to stress. If you've been doing everything "right" and still can't lose the weight, this episode shows you why, and what to do next.
What You'll Learn:
• Why calorie counting misses the real driver behind midlife weight gain
• How insulin resistance changes your body's response to the same foods you've always eaten
• What a CGM actually tracks, and why one snapshot a day was never enough
• How sleep and stress can spike your blood sugar even when you haven't eaten a bite
• Why "insulin insight" — not more willpower — is the missing piece for stubborn midlife weightThe Finally Losing It Bootcamp begins August 11th — two days, live with Carrie, no food logs and no meal plans, just the why behind your blood sugar and your body: 👉🏼 https://mendmymetabolism.com/bootcamp

37 | Why I Wear a Blood Sugar Monitor to Finally Lose Weight
Show notes
Have you ever thought a blood sugar monitor was only for people with diabetes?
Do you feel like you're doing everything right and the scale still won't move?
Could your blood sugar be spiking and crashing all day without you even knowing it?
Carrie wears a continuous glucose monitor almost every day — and she's not diabetic. In this episode, she shares what showed up on her own CGM screen and why it changed how she thinks about blood sugar levels, cravings, and stubborn midlife weight. You'll hear her personal story, why insulin resistance hides behind "just menopause," and why one photo of a house isn't the same as a full walkthrough.
What You'll Learn:
• Why a blood sugar monitor isn't just for a diabetes diagnosis anymore
• What changed for Carrie's body once she hit perimenopause and menopause
• Why the same foods can spike your blood sugar differently at 50 than they did at 30
• The difference between a once-a-year lab number and watching your own patterns in real time
• Why "eating healthy" doesn't always mean your blood sugar agrees with youCome learn how to finally read your own body's data at the Finally Losing It Bootcamp, August 11th and 12th. 👉🏼 https://mendmymetabolism.com/bootcamp

Wondering why stress hits different in menopause than it did in your 20s and 30s?
Could insulin — not willpower — be the real reason you can't lose weight around your middle?
In this episode, I'm getting real about my own overloaded season to explain why stress feels so much harder to shake after 40. • Three simple, grace-based ways to steady your blood sugar levels and support a calmer cortisol response

Do you white-knuckle every food decision on a trip because you're afraid one wrong bite will spike your blood sugar for the whole week?
Have you ever wondered if you can actually lose weight and manage insulin resistance while traveling, without packing a suitcase full of willpower?
In this episode, I'm sharing my real packing list and travel strategy ahead of my own family trip Up North — what I pack for protein on the go, how I think about wearing my CGM (continuous glucose monitor) on vacation, and how I handle hotel breakfasts, road trips, and flights without spiking my blood sugar or feeling deprived. I'm also tackling the all-or-nothing trap that makes one off meal feel like it ruins an entire trip, and reminding you that connection matters more than perfection.
What You'll Learn:

• My honest back-and-forth on wearing a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) while traveling, and how I decide

34 | Menopause & Blood Sugar After Eating at Social Events: What to Do
Show notes
Do you panic in front of the dessert table at every party, wondering what it's going to do to your blood sugar levels?
Do you either white-knuckle through gatherings or eat everything in sight and spiral into shame for days afterward?
Could insulin resistance and hidden stress be the real reason a holiday plate hits your blood sugar so much harder in midlife — and could that be sabotaging your ability to lose weight?
In this episode, I'm breaking down why social gatherings hit your blood sugar levels harder in midlife than they used to — and why that has nothing to do with willpower. I'm sharing a real moment from my own life, naming the hidden fear behind not wanting to be "that friend" at the table, and walking you through simple, doable moves you can use at your very next party, holiday, or girls' night without feeling deprived or ending up in a shame spiral the next day.
What You'll Learn:
• Why stress, poor sleep, and midlife hormone shifts stack together to make a party plate hit your blood sugar harder than the same food would on a calm Tuesday
• The real fear hiding underneath "I don't want to be the weird one at the table" — and why nobody's tracking your plate the way you think
• Six practical moves to protect your blood sugar at any gathering, from checking the menu ahead of time to picking your one "yes" and letting the rest go
• Why portion size matters more than perfection, and how to know when skipping something is easier than starting it
• Why one cookie, one cocktail, or one bowl of ice cream doesn't undo months of progress with insulin resistance — but the shame spiral afterward might🎓 Finally Losing It Bootcamp — Free Live 2-Day Event, August 11–12! Tired of fighting cortisol belly and wondering if you'll ever find a "why" strong enough to keep you going?
In this episode, I'm answering a question straight from a woman in our Facebook group: how do you stay focused on the long term after you've stumbled? I'm sharing why one bad meal, one bad number, or one bad day doesn't undo your progress — and walking you through how to find the "why" that actually carries you through midlife weight loss, blood sugar swings, and stubborn cortisol belly, especially when you feel like you've ruined everything.
What You'll Learn:

• How to stop letting one bad day convince you the whole plan failed
• Why "I want to lose weight" isn't a strong enough why to hold up when you stumble

32 | 8 Signs You’re Overcoming Insulin Resistance & Why Focusing on Weight Loss Isn’t Helping
Show notes
Are you doing everything right with insulin resistance and still not losing weight in menopause?
How do you know your blood sugar levels are actually improving when the scale won't budge?
What are the early signs your body is healing from insulin resistance, even before the weight comes off?
You've cut back on sugar. You've changed how you eat. You're paying attention to how you feel. And you're still waiting for the scale to tell you it's working.
Here's the truth: the scale is one of the last things to change when you start reversing insulin resistance. In this episode, I'm walking you through eight signs your body gives you when things are actually shifting — signs that show up long before the number on the scale does. These are real, physical signals tied to your blood sugar and metabolism, and most midlife women miss them completely because nobody ever told them where to look.
What You'll Learn:
• Why the scale lags behind what's really happening in your body during insulin resistance recovery
• The 8 non-scale victories that signal your blood sugar is stabilizing — from quieter food noise to better sleep to fewer urgent cravings
• Why inches often shift before pounds, and what that means for your midlife metabolism
• How to recognize your body bouncing back faster after an off-plan meal, and why that's a sign of progress, not failure
• A simple way to start tracking your own non-scale wins so you don't quit before the good stuff shows upInsulin Insight for Midlife Weight Loss — Waitlist Now Open! Be one of the first to get access and special launch pricing: 👉🏼 https://carrieswellnessrx.myflodesk.com/insulininsightwaitlist
