Peace of Mind for Pet Parents: Navigating Life & Death With Aging or Ill Pets
Caring for an aging, seriously ill, or dying pet can be filled with love, uncertainty, difficult choices—and moments of extraordinary connection.
Peace of Mind for Pet Parents, hosted by BrightHaven founder Gail Pope and educator Karen Wylie, explores the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of animal hospice and end-of-life care. Through compassionate conversations and practical education, Gail and Karen help pet parents better understand what their pet may be experiencing, recognize changing care needs, communicate with veterinary professionals, consider difficult decisions, and care for themselves along the way.
Episodes explore quality of life, comfort and palliative care, caregiver overwhelm, anticipatory grief, natural dying, euthanasia, after-death care, memorial rituals, and the continuing bond we share with our animals.
Rooted in BrightHaven’s decades of experience and a relationship-centered approach, this podcast honors three intertwined journeys: the pet’s journey, the caregiver’s journey, and the changing relationship between them.
You do not have to know everything or face this journey alone. We are here to help you find greater understanding, steadiness, and peace of mind—while making every moment count.

The Circle of Life: It's All Living Until It Isn't
Episode 88
Show notes
The Beginning, the Ending, and All the Love in Between
When does living become dying? And when an animal enters the final chapter of life, does that mean the living—and loving—somehow become less important?
In this thoughtful conversation, BrightHaven's Gail Pope and Karen Wylie explore the circle of life, from the joyful beginnings of our relationships with animals to the changes, challenges, and transitions that come with aging, illness, and approaching death.
Inspired by the reflections of longtime human hospice educator Barbara Karnes, Gail and Karen consider how our awareness of an animal's approaching death can change the way we experience the time we still have together.
What happens when we begin seeing our beloved companion as dying rather than living? Can we grieve what is changing while continuing to celebrate what remains? And might the ordinary moments of caregiving—sharing familiar routines, offering comfort, simply being together—hold a sacredness we sometimes overlook?
Drawing on their personal experiences and years of work in animal hospice and end-of-life education, Gail and Karen explore the relationship between living and dying, the meaning of life's final chapter, and the ways our bonds with animals may continue beyond physical death.
This isn't a conversation about what you should do or how you should feel. It's an invitation to consider the whole journey of life, including the love that fills the space between beginning and ending.
As Gail reminds us: "Enjoy the love. Bask in the love."💜

When Your Pet Was Your Co-Worker: Grieving a Pet When You Work From Home
Episode 87
Show notes
Grieving the loss of the companion who shared your workday, your routines, and your home.
When your pet is also your co-worker, losing them changes more than your home life. It changes the rhythm of your entire day.
For those of us who work from home, our animals are woven into nearly everything we do. They sleep beside our desks, follow us from room to room, remind us when it's time for lunch, and occasionally insist that we've worked long enough. Their companionship becomes such a natural part of our everyday lives that we may not realize just how much space they fill until they're gone.
In Episode 087 of Peace of Mind for Pet Parents, Karen Wylie and Gail Pope explore the unique grief experienced by people who lose a beloved animal who was also their constant workday companion.
Inspired by a question from Emily, a certified Animal Hospice Practitioner who leads pet loss support groups, Karen and Gail reflect on the many ways animals shape our daily routines, the painful reminders of their absence, and how love and connection may continue even after death.
Through personal stories, affectionate memories, and plenty of laughter, they explore the countless ways our animals become part of our lives—and why their absence can be felt in even the smallest moments.
What happens when you sit down at the same desk tomorrow morning, but your companion is no longer there?
Join Karen and Gail for a warm, personal conversation about the little things we miss, the routines we shared, and the challenge of moving through familiar days without the animal who made them so special. 💜

Witnessing Pet Cremation: A Meaningful Goodbye
Episode 86
Show notes
What does it mean to witness your beloved pet's cremation? And how might the experience become part of a meaningful goodbye?
In the final episode of our three-part conversation with Dr. Alice Kay Lovelace, D.Min., Alice shares how she and her husband, David, discovered the possibility of being present for their cats' cremations—and how that experience became part of their evolving approach to honoring their beloved companions after death.
Alice describes what she witnessed at the crematory, the personal rituals she created, and how she and David respected each other's different needs throughout the experience. Her story offers a perspective on pet cremation that many families may never have considered.
But their journey doesn't end at the crematory.
After the cremation, Alice and David continue honoring their beloved companion with a special commemorative dinner—a deeply personal family tradition that has become part of their way of saying goodbye.
Back at home, another ritual unfolds. Alice shares how The Empty Basket, a practice that evolved within the Lovelace household, gradually becomes a place of remembrance—and how their surviving cats participate in ways that help Alice and David recognize when it's time to put the basket away.
Through their experiences, Alice reminds us that meaningful goodbyes don't have to follow someone else's instructions. Families can discover choices, develop their own rituals, and find ways to honor the relationships that continue after death.
Join Gail Pope and Karen Wylie for this moving conclusion to Alice's story, exploring witnessed cremation, pet loss, family rituals, and the many ways love continues beyond goodbye.

Keeping Them Close After Death: Pet Loss Rituals at Home
Episode 85
Show notes
How One Family Creates Rituals to Honor Their Pets at Home
What might it look like to honor a beloved pet at home after death?
After her cat Rupert died, Dr. Alice Kay Lovelace, D.Min., found herself wishing she could have kept his body with her longer. She simply hadn't known that was something a family could do.
Then Gail Pope told Alice about the way BrightHaven had honored sanctuary animals at home after death for many years. Learning about BrightHaven's experience expanded Alice's sense of what was possible and eventually gave her and her husband, David, the courage to try it themselves.
But Alice didn't simply recreate BrightHaven's rituals. She began developing rituals that felt right for her own animals and family.
In this second episode of our conversation with Alice, she takes us inside those rituals. She describes creating an honoring basket, selecting special fabrics and meaningful objects, tenderly wrapping the body, and caring for her pet's body with ice while it remains at home.
She also talks about allowing the other cats to approach and spend time with their companion after death—and about what she has observed as they come, go, and sometimes return.
In many ways, Alice and David have created their own kind of home wake for their pets: a quiet period when the animal remains physically present with the family before leaving home for cremation.
But Alice's rituals aren't a prescription for anyone else.
Even after learning that keeping a pet at home after death was possible, Alice wasn't ready to make that choice with the first animal she lost. And there is no required amount of time, particular ritual, or single "right" way to say goodbye.
Instead, Alice's story offers something much more personal: an invitation to discover what might feel meaningful for you, your family, and the animal you love.
As Alice explains, ritual can help transform grief into gratitude.

Pet Loss, Natural Dying, and Discovering Another Way to Say Goodbye
Episode 84
Show notes
What happens when a beloved pet is dying—and you discover that some of the choices you thought were simply “what happens next” may not be your only choices at all?
For Dr. Alice Kay Lovelace, D.Min., that discovery didn't happen all at once.
It grew out of a lifetime of loving animals, losing them, asking spiritual questions, learning from the animals who shared her life, and gradually finding a different way to understand dying, death, grief, and the relationship that remains.
In this first of three conversations, Alice takes us back to where that journey began: the death of her puppy Pixie when she was seven. That loss awakened questions about prayer, God, death, and spiritual connection that would stay with her for decades.
Eventually, those questions—and the animals and people who became her teachers—led Alice into ministry, Reiki, animal chaplaincy, pet loss grief support, and animal hospice.
And then came Rupert.
When Rupert began dying naturally at home, Alice and her husband, David, chose to remain with him. But after he died, they confronted a question for which they had never really prepared:
What do we do now?
They had always followed the familiar next steps after a pet died. Until that moment, they hadn't realized there might be other possibilities.
A later conversation with BrightHaven founder Gail Pope introduced Alice to BrightHaven's practice of spending extended time honoring an animal's body after death.
A door had opened.
But discovering that another choice exists and being ready to make that choice are not necessarily the same thing.
That distinction becomes the beginning of Alice's remarkable journey—and of this three-part conversation about what it can mean to accompany an animal before death, after death, and all the way home again.
This Episode Is for You If:
• Your pet is approaching the end of life and you're wondering what may happen next
• You have wondered what choices families have after a pet dies
• You are considering—or have experienced—a natural death at home
• You are curious about how grief and spiritual connection can exist together
• You want to understand why some families choose to spend time with their pet's body after death
• You have ever looked back after a pet's death and wondered whether there were choices you simply didn't know existed
• You are exploring ways of saying goodbye that reflect your relationship, beliefs, values, and familyIn This Episode You'll Hear:
• How losing her puppy Pixie at age seven began Alice's lifelong questions about prayer, death, and spiritual connection
• How later losses and relationships with animals continued shaping those questions
• Why Alice came to understand animals as some of her most important teachers
• How ministry, Reiki, animal chaplaincy, pet loss grief support, and animal hospice became part of her path
• How Alice and David accompanied their cat Rupert through a natural death at home
• Why remaining at home with Rupert became an important choice
• The question that arose immediately after Rupert died: “What do we do now?”
• Why families may follow familiar after-death procedures without realizing other choices may exist
• How Gail Pope introduced Alice to BrightHaven's three-day honoring practice
• Why discovering a new possibility doesn't necessarily mean we are immediately ready to choose it📌 Related Resource:

PEACEFUL at 10: The Story Behind the Quality of Dying Guide
Episode 83
Show notes
Three pioneers of animal hospice reunite to reflect on natural dying, caregiver choice, and what they learned along the way.
Ten years ago, Gail Pope, Dr. Ella Bittel, and Dr. Kathryn Marocchino brought their experience and perspectives together to create the PEACEFUL Quality of Dying Guide: Signs of a Peaceful Passing.
• 📖 PEACEFUL Quality of Dying Guide: Signs of a Peaceful Passing - https://brightpathforpets.com/resources/peaceful-quality-of-dying-guide/
In this special anniversary episode, Karen joins the three co-creators to look back at how they found one another, why PEACEFUL was created, and what they hoped it would offer pet caregivers facing the uncertainty of a beloved animal’s final days.
Their conversation explores:
• What is normal during the dying process
• Natural dying and hospice-supported natural death
• Quality of life beyond scores and numbers
• Caregiver choice and the importance of adaptability
• Education and preparation for a pet’s end of life
• Presence, love, and relationship at the heart of hospice careTheir conversation explores natural dying, quality of life, caregiver choice, and the importance of understanding what is normal during the dying process. They also reflect on the role of education, presence, adaptability, and the relationship between an animal and the person who loves and cares for them.
And the conversation looks forward, too, as Karen and Gail share their evolving vision of Relationship-Centered Animal Hospice—a way of understanding hospice that places the animal, caregiver, and their relationship at the heart of the journey.
💜 ANNOUNCEMENT: Karen and Gail also share that enrollment is now open for their new 8-week LIVE course, Relationship-Centered Animal Hospice, beginning October 13th and running through December 1st. More Than Medicine: Staying Your Pet's Person
Episode 82
Show notes
How to Keep Love and Connection at the Heart of Caregiving
When a beloved pet is diagnosed with a chronic or terminal illness, caregiving can quietly take over every interaction — the pills, the monitoring, the mobility help, the feeding changes — until it starts to feel like there's no time left for anything but tasks. In this episode of Peace of Mind for Pet Parents, hosts Karen Wylie, EdD, and Gail Pope explore what happens when animal caregiving starts to feel more like nursing than loving, and share practical, heartfelt ways to protect the relationship underneath all that care.
Drawing on more than three decades of hands-on hospice experience at BrightHaven, Gail shares stories of turning medical routines into genuine connection — from creative ways to make medicine time something pets look forward to, to the atmosphere of music, laughter, and gentle touch that kept fear from taking over during even the busiest caregiving days. Karen shares the story of her cat, Mr. Hope, and how a simple daily ritual around his heart medication became a "ritual of love" that carried them both through the final months of his life without letting caregiving crowd out their bond.
Together, Karen and Gail talk honestly about recognizing caregiver burnout, the quiet signs that a pet may be pulling away from a caregiver who has become "all tasks," and small, realistic ways to build in moments of pure connection — no task attached — even on the busiest care days.
Whether you're managing pills, subcutaneous fluids, mobility support, or simply trying to stay present with an aging or seriously ill pet, this episode offers both permission and practical tools to remain your pet's person, not just their nurse.
In This Episode:
• Why caregiving tasks can quietly take over the relationship with a chronically or terminally ill pet
• How to recognize the early signs of caregiver burnout
• Real strategies for turning medication time into connection, including BrightHaven's colostrum method
• The story of Mr. Hope, and how ritual can transform daily animal hospice care
• Small, realistic ways to build in moments of pure connection with your pet💜 ANNOUNCEMENT: Karen and Gail also share that enrollment is now open for their new 8-week LIVE course, Relationship-Centered Animal Hospice, beginning October 13th and running through December 1st. Advance Directives Aren't Just for Humans, Pet Advance Directive: A Complete Guide for Pet Parents
Episode 81
Show notes
Why every pet parent needs a plan for end-of-life decisions they can't make in the moment. Losing a pet is hard enough without having to make every decision in the moment. This episode walks pet parents through how to write a pet advance directive—naming a backup decision-maker, defining quality of life, and choosing between natural death and euthanasia—so your wishes are clear before a crisis hits.
IN THIS EPISODE
• What a pet advance directive is, and how it differs from a human one
• Naming a backup decision-maker your pet's caregiver can turn to
• Using the LIVING Quality of Life Care Assessment to define what "quality of life" means for your individual pet
• How far to go with treatment—and setting financial limits without guilt or shame
• Natural death vs. euthanasia: why writing down your leaning (not a locked-in decision) helps whoever steps in for you
• Where, with whom, and how much pain management—the details a caregiver can't guess
• Helping a new caregiver understand who your pet really is, beyond the basics
• Real examples: what Karen has (and hasn't) written down for Chey, Livy, and her cats
• Aftercare wishes: burial, cremation, or aquamation, and honoring rituals
• Keeping the document current and sharing it with your veterinarianGail Pope and Karen Wylie, EdD talk through what belongs in a pet's advance directive—and why writing it down now, while you can think clearly, spares your family guesswork and regret later. They share personal stories, including Gail's conversation with her daughter Kirstie about her own advance directive, and Karen's approach to documenting wishes for her Australian Shepherds, Chey and Livy.

You Did Your Best... But What If You Didn't?
Episode 80
Show notes
2 Kinds of Caregiver Regret, and How to Move Forward From Both. "We did our best" is the phrase pet parents hear more than almost any other after a loss. But what happens when the honest answer is more complicated than that? In this episode, Karen Wylie, EdD and Gail Pope respond to a listener's comment that named something they'd never fully put into words — and it changes how they think about regret going forward.
A listener named Wendy left a comment on Episode 21 (their original episode on regret) describing a specific kind of guilt: seeing a known sign of illness, minimizing it, and not going to the vet — even when the eventual decision turned out to be the right one. Karen and Gail realized Episode 21 had only ever covered one kind of regret. So in this episode, they name two:
• Decision regret — looking back at a choice you made and second-guessing it, even though you made the best call you could with the information you had
• Noticing regret — seeing a possible warning sign and choosing not to act on it, which is a harder kind of regret to forgive because it isn't about not knowing, it's about not following throughKaren and Gail get personal here. Karen shares the story of nearly missing the signs of her dog Chey's partial cruciate ligament tear, and a decades-old memory of trusting her gut with a Birman cat's mysterious eye symptom. Gail opens up about the very present, very raw decision she's navigating right now with her cat Maisie — kidney failure, subcutaneous fluids that terrify her, and the daily argument she has with herself about whether she's doing enough.
This episode won't tell you there's an easy way to silence that voice. But it will help you name what you're carrying, understand where it comes from, and start finding your way back to self-compassion — whether your regret is about a decision you made, or a sign you noticed and let go.💜

The Signs Nobody Told You About: A Gentle Walkthrough of Active Dying
Episode 79
Show notes
When a pet parent calls in a panic and says, "I don't know if this is normal," they're almost always describing one of a handful of very predictable signs. In this episode, Karen Wylie, EdD and Gail Pope walk you gently through what actually happens in the body as death approaches — so that if you find yourself in this moment, you'll recognize what you're seeing instead of fearing it.
We cover:
• Why appetite loss is so often the first sign pet parents notice — and why panic sets in right around the same time
• What's really happening when a pet vomits after eating, and why the rule is always "offer food, but never force it"
• Incontinence and weakness as the body naturally lets go of control
• Why pain is not a normal part of dying — but must still be treated if it's present from a chronic illness
• The real difference between pain (physical) and suffering (emotional) — and why animals rarely suffer the way we imagine they do
• Twitching, restlessness, and other neurological changes that can look alarming but are simply part of Mother Nature's processGail also shares something unusually vulnerable: her cat Maisie, adopted just a couple of months ago, stopped eating two days before this recording — and Gail talks through her own panic, in real time, even after thirty-plus years of doing this work. It's a rare, honest look at what it feels like to sit inside the process you've taught others how to navigate.
Whether you're facing this moment right now or simply want to be prepared, this episode will help you recognize what's normal, know when to reach out, and trust that you don't have to have all the answers — you just have to stay present with love.💜

You Didn't Fail Your Pet: The Truth About Being Present at the Moment of Death
Episode 78
Show notes
If your pet died while you stepped out of the room, or you weren't able to be there in their final moments, you may still carry guilt about it. In this episode, Karen Wylie, EdD and Gail Pope close out their four-part series on hospice myths by exploring the tender territory of being present at the time of death.
We tackle three deeply held beliefs that can weigh heavily on pet parents:
• The myth that when animals die alone, their loved ones have failed them — and why so many animals seem to wait until we step away
• The myth that children should be shielded from a dying pet — and what decades of hospice experience shows about what children are actually capable of understanding
• The myth that men don't cry — and why permission to grieve openly matters for every caregiver, regardless of genderAlong the way, Gail shares a deeply personal story about being present at her husband Richard's death, and what it taught her about letting go. She also tells the story of her granddaughter Emma and a beloved cat named Elvis — a moment that reshaped how she understands children and natural death.
Whether your pet is still with you or you're carrying grief from a loss in the past, this conversation offers real permission: you don't have to be in the room at the exact right moment to have loved well. You did your best, and you did it with love. And that is enough.💜

Your Heart Knows What It's Doing Too: Three Caregiver Myths About the End
Episode 77
Show notes
We've spent the last two episodes exploring why families wait too long to consider hospice care, and what's really happening in a pet's body during the dying process. This week, Karen Wylie, EdD and Gail Pope turn the lens inward, toward what's happening for us as caregivers.
Because there are three beliefs many loving pet parents carry that can quietly get in the way of a peaceful ending, both for our pets and for ourselves. The belief that we have to do everything possible, no matter what. The belief that staying positive can somehow change the outcome. And the belief that we have to hold ourselves together and hide our grief so we don't upset our pet.
These beliefs all come from love. But in this honest, heart-forward conversation, Karen and Gail unpack why each one deserves a second look.
Myth #1: I must do everything possible to keep them alive. Gail shares how her own approach began in "fix-it" mode decades ago at the start of BrightHaven, and how she gradually learned to trust Mother Nature as, in her words, "the other doctor in the room." Karen shares what she's learned firsthand while helping her own dog, Shay, manage a knee injury, and the two talk through how to tell the difference between fighting for your pet and fighting the natural process of decline.
Myth #2: Positive thinking can delay our pet's death. Karen and Gail talk honestly about the fear underneath this myth, the fear of even thinking about death and dying, and why hospice and death remain two of the most feared words in our culture. They share what genuinely helps: prayer, mindfulness, presence, and simply following your pet's lead.
Myth #3: We shouldn't burden our dying pet with our tears. This is the one Gail calls "a big one for me." Crying is healing. Tears release endorphins. And our pets already know when we're grieving, whether we let them see it or not. Gail shares the story of a young boy and his dying dog, Belka, and why sharing our grief with our pets may be one of the most loving things we can do. Karen shares her own twenty-year practice of preparing her pets emotionally and spiritually for their transition, and how animals often support each other as "animal doulas" in the dying process.
Along the way, Karen and Gail also talk about the difference between fighting for your pet and fighting the natural process of decline, why "Dr. Google" can be a genuinely useful resource for straightforward questions but less reliable once you step into holistic or more nuanced territory, and why the trajectory toward the end of life often becomes less like jumping off a cliff and more like a long, gentle decline, when we stop rushing to fix everything and simply let it unfold.
As Gail says at the close of this episode, it isn't about doing and being for our pets. It's about taking the journey together. It begins and ends with love.
If you've ever felt guilty for not doing enough, or worried that your grief might upset your pet, this conversation is for you. You're not alone in carrying these beliefs, and you're not failing your pet by questioning them. 💜

In this episode, Karen Wylie and Gail Pope bust the biggest myths about active dying, explaining the natural body chemistry, from endorphins to enkephalins, that makes a pet's final days more peaceful than most families realize.
IN THIS EPISODE
Karen Wylie and Gail Pope tackle the myths that keep families afraid during a pet's final days, starting with the biggest one: that dying itself is painful. They walk through why appetite and thirst naturally fade, why sleep increases, and why the body's own endorphins and enkephalins provide comfort without medication. Gail also addresses two of the most common 2 a.m. questions: whether to force-feed a pet who's stopped eating, and whether seizures are a normal part of the dying process. The episode closes with a gentle reframe — picturing the body as a house the spirit is stepping out of — to help families be present without trying to fix what doesn't need fixing.KEY TOPICS COVERED
• Is dying painful, or is it the underlying illness?
• How endorphins and enkephalins relieve pain naturally at end of life
• Why dying pets stop eating and drinking, and why force-feeding isn't the answer
• Managing fluids and hydration in the final days
• Why pets sleep more as they approach death
• Are seizures normal at the end of life?
• The "body as a house" metaphor for understanding natural death📌 Related Resource:

The Late-to-Care Problem: Hospice Myths, Explained
Episode 75
Show notes
The surprising statistics behind hospice — and the myths that keep families from asking for help sooner. Half of all human hospice patients die within just 18 days of enrolling — and nearly a quarter enroll in their very last week of life, even though hospice is available for up to six months. That statistic breaks our hearts every time we come back to it, because we see the exact same pattern in animal families: people waiting until there's almost nothing left to wait for.
In this episode, Karen Wylie and Gail Pope dig into the myths that keep pet parents — and people — from reaching out for hospice support sooner, starting with the biggest one of all: that hospice means it's basically over. Gail reframes hospice as the last chapter of living, not a countdown to death, and shares an unforgettable, deeply personal story about her late husband Richard, who told his hospice doctor he'd "think about it for a couple of weeks" just hours before he died.
Karen and Gail also unpack:
• Why pain is the biggest myth about natural death — and what's actually normal in the dying process
• How to prepare for a home death so you're not blindsided by what it actually looks like
• Why so few pet parents ever hear the word "hospice" from their veterinarian
• What it really means to shift from curing to comfort — for pets and for peopleIf you're sitting with a difficult diagnosis right now, this episode is for you. Hospice isn't something to turn to only when there's nothing left to do — it's something to turn toward, as early as possible, so you and your pet can have more weeks and months of comfort, connection, and peace than you knew were possible.💜

Are You Really Seeing Your Pet Clearly? : How Love, Fear, and Exhaustion Cloud Quality of Life
Episode 74
Show notes
Every pet parent wants to make the right call at the right time. But love, fear, and exhaustion all have a quiet way of changing what we're actually able to see.
In this episode, Karen Wylie and Gail Pope talk honestly about the three things that most commonly cloud a caregiver's judgment — not to fix them, but to name them, because naming them is often the first step to seeing more clearly.
Karen opens with the story of her cat Mr. Hope's red eye — a symptom she caught and treated in the moment, but only fully understood two years later, when a photograph revealed how much he had actually declined. Gail shares a parallel truth from her own life: how a symptom in front of us can become the entire focus, while everything else about how a pet is doing quietly falls out of view.
They then turn to fear — how it can make caregivers brace for the worst even on a good day, illustrated by Gail's story of worrying over her newly adopted cat Maisie's litter box habits. "Love can blur the bad, and fear can blur the good," as Karen puts it.
Finally, they talk about the exhaustion that builds over long-term caregiving, and the routines that help hold it at bay — Gail's practice of "checking in" with each animal during daily feeding rounds at BrightHaven, and Karen's habit of compartmentalizing caregiving tasks into set morning and evening rounds, so she can let go and enjoy the rest of her day.
If this conversation resonates, Karen and Gail invite you to try their free LIVING Quality of Life Assessment at brightpathforpets.com — a simple tool that walks you through six areas to help you notice what's really going on with your pet, week to week. 💜

Reading What They Can't Say: Pain, Comfort, and the End-of-Life Care Journal
Episode 73
Show notes
Have you ever sat next to a pet in decline and thought, "I don't know if this is pain, or if it's just old age"? You're not alone — and that question is exactly what this episode is about.
Gail Pope and Karen Wylie follow hospice nurse Barbara Karnes, whose decades of teaching human hospice families translate surprisingly well into animal care — with one key difference: our pets can't tell us in words how they feel. Their behavior has to speak for them.
In this conversation, Gail and Karen unpack:
• Why dying itself usually isn't painful — disease is
• The difference between ordinary discomfort and true pain
• How Gail's own approach to comfort care has evolved — bedding, diet, homeopathy, and CBD
• Why behavior becomes your pet's "vocabulary" when words aren't possible
• How keeping a simple daily record helps your veterinarian help you
• Gail's view of Mother Nature as "the other doctor in the room"
• How good pain management and close observation can make natural death feel like a stronger, safer option
• Why education — not fear — is what carries a pet parent through the hardest decisionsIf you've ever wondered whether you're missing something, or whether you're overreacting to something completely normal, this episode offers a gentler way to trust what you're seeing — and yourself. 💜

Am I Keeping My Pet Alive for Me — or for Them?
Episode 72
Show notes
Almost every pet parent asks themselves this question at some point, usually late at night: Am I keeping my pet alive for me, or for them? It can feel like an accusation the moment it crosses your mind — but Gail Pope and Karen Wylie don't think it's nearly as damning as it sounds.
In this episode, Gail and Karen unpack where this question really comes from — fear of death, lack of education, and, underneath both, love — and share BrightHaven's guiding philosophy, Healing for the Highest Good. Instead of focusing on fixing a diagnosis or an aging process, Healing for the Highest Good asks what will support the whole being — physically, emotionally, and spiritually — one day at a time.
You'll hear Gail and Karen talk through:
• Why this question tends to surface, and why it isn't a sign of failure
• What Healing for the Highest Good means in daily, practical terms
• Why "for my pet" and "for me" are never really separate in a caregiving relationship
• How anticipatory grief quietly complicates end-of-life caregiving
• Why wanting more time with a sick or aging pet doesn't make you selfish
• How the BrightPath LIVING Quality of Life Assessment can offer a gentle gut-check
• Why appetite changes alone don't always mean it's time
• The importance of being kind to yourself as part of caring well for your petIf you've been lying awake wondering whether you're doing the right thing by your pet, this conversation is for you. As Gail and Karen remind us: asking the question means you're paying attention, and that's not selfishness — that's love.💜

Why Euthanasia Stays the Default: Even When It's Hurting Everyone
Episode 71
Show notes
Why is euthanasia the automatic response to a terminal diagnosis — even when it isn't actually serving the pet, the pet parent, or the veterinarian performing the procedure? In this episode, Karen Wylie, EdD, and Gail Pope open up a conversation they've wanted to have for a long time: how euthanasia became the default, and what it's costing all three parties involved.
This is not an argument against euthanasia. Karen and Gail are clear from the start: when a pet is in genuine pain or suffering, euthanasia can be one of the most loving choices a family can make. But they've also both witnessed families walk away from that decision carrying guilt, regret, and the nagging feeling that something wasn't right — that it was too soon, or handled on the wrong day, for the wrong reasons.
Gail traces the roots of the problem back to a culture that has grown increasingly afraid of death — for humans first, and then, by extension, for our pets. Karen shares a striking comparison: while 92–99% of human deaths in the US, Canada, Australia, and the UK are attributed to natural causes, and medical aid in dying accounts for less than 1% of human deaths, roughly 90% of companion animals are euthanized. Given how biologically similar we are to our pets, the two ask: why such a dramatic difference?
The conversation moves through some of the marketing language used to make euthanasia decisions feel easier — phrases like "better a day too early than a day too late" — and how that language can quietly remove the animal's own experience from the decision. Karen and Gail talk about why most people, and most veterinarians, have never actually witnessed a natural death, and how that lack of exposure feeds fear on all sides.
They also explore what changes when a pet is allowed to lead its own transition: how grief looks different, how it can become less entangled with guilt and regret, and how supporting an animal through natural decline — whether from illness or simple old age — can offer families the chance to say everything they needed to say, in their own time.
This episode focuses closely on how the current system affects pets and pet parents. The third piece of this picture — how it affects veterinarians themselves — is a conversation Karen and Gail will pick up directly in an upcoming 30-minute webinar on natural death as an option, exploring why this choice is so rarely discussed between veterinarians and the families they serve. Details on that webinar will be shared soon.
If today's conversation stirs something in you — a past decision, a decision you're facing now, or one you sense may be coming — Karen and Gail invite you to sit with it not with guilt, but with curiosity about what might be possible. Natural death isn't the right path for every pet or every family. But it is a real, supported path, and it deserves a place in every conversation that begins with a serious diagnosis.💜

You Don't Have to Be a Vet: The Diverse World of Animal Hospice Practitioners
Episode 70
Show notes
What is a certified animal hospice practitioner — and why have most pet parents never heard of one?
In this episode of Peace of Mind for Pet Parents, Karen and Gail pull back the curtain on one of the most misunderstood and underutilized sources of support available to families caring for aging or seriously ill pets. The short answer: a certified animal hospice practitioner is not a veterinarian — and that's exactly what makes them so valuable.
Over the past five years, Animal Hospice Group has trained and certified practitioners from remarkably diverse backgrounds — pet sitters, social workers, Reiki practitioners, grief counselors, animal chaplains, canine massage therapists, and more. What they share is not a medical degree. What they share is a deep love for animals and a calling to walk beside pet parents through one of the most difficult seasons of life.
In this conversation, Karen and Gail talk about:
• Who becomes a certified animal hospice practitioner and what draws them to this work
• What happens inside AHG's training that changes not just skills, but presence and confidence
• Why staying out of the medical lane actually makes a CAHP more valuable, not less
• What a CAHP can offer that a 15-minute vet visit simply cannot
• How hospice care — far from meaning "giving up" — can sometimes extend and enrich a pet's life in surprising ways
• Why this work is, as Gail says, all about life, living, and lovingWhether you are a pet parent wondering who can really support you between vet visits, or someone quietly wondering if you might belong in this work yourself — this episode was made for you.
The world needs more people willing to show up for animals and their families in these most tender moments. Karen and Gail are here to show you what that looks like. 💜

Preparing for Your Pet's Death: Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Ways to Make Every Moment Count
Episode 69
Show notes
When a beloved pet has a life-changing diagnosis, one of the hardest things to do is think ahead. Most of us avoid it — not because we don't care, but because we care so deeply. We worry that planning for our pet's death somehow means giving up on them, or even hurrying it along. In this episode, Karen and Gail gently but directly address that fear — and explain why preparing, far from being an act of surrender, is actually one of the greatest gifts you can give both your pet and yourself.
Together, they walk through what thoughtful preparation looks like across four interconnected areas:
The Physical Side — From mobility aids and comfort kits to veterinary conversations about pain and symptom management, Karen and Gail talk honestly about how your pet's practical needs will shift over time — and why flexible, adaptive planning beats trying to have everything figured out from day one.
The Emotional Side — Long before a pet takes their last breath, most caregivers are already grieving. That grief even has a name: anticipatory grief. Gail shares a deeply personal story about what it felt like the day after losing Bobby, one of BrightHaven's beloved cats — and why being willing to grieve with your pet before they leave may be one of the most loving things you can do.
The Spiritual Side — You don't need to identify as spiritual or religious to find meaning and peace in this process. Karen and Gail explore what sacred space looks like in practice, how Gail's concept of the "body house" has helped countless caregivers make sense of loss, and why they believe that our relationship with our pets doesn't end with physical death.
The Practical Side — From researching at-home euthanasia vets while you're still thinking clearly, to planning how you'd like to honor your pet's body after death, this episode covers the decisions most people leave until the last possible moment — and explains why thinking them through early makes all the difference.
Whether you have months ahead with your pet or just days, Karen and Gail remind you: it's never too late to begin. Even small steps of preparation give you the gift of presence when the moment arrives — so that when it comes, you can simply be with your pet, without scrambling, without regret, and without feeling alone. 💜
