IN SESSION #23: Cuba & the Worldwide Family of Militant Women w/ Arlene Eisen
Show notes
I am was joined for this livestream by militant comrade Arlene Eisen--and let me tell you how excited I was!! Arlene has sooo much knowledge, both historical and practicel, and also from and for the current moment. Arlene and I discussed her incredible book, In the Worldwide Family of Militant Women, and something that is/was on both of our minds: Cuba. Arlene's book documents her long history being involved in militant struggle and revolutionary movements--so we definitely dove in there, but also into so much more.
Inspired by the Black and Vietnamese liberation movements, Arlene has been a militant in the struggle against imperialism since the 1960's-- first as a protester facing tear gas and later as a teacher and writer. She edited The Movement newspaper, and was a leading voice in the anti-imperialist women's movement of the 1970's. For the next half century, she joined the anti-apartheid movement, the movement for justice in Palestine, including the olive harvest in the West Bank, the struggle for the right to return to New Orleans after Katrina, the movements against fascist U.S. police and their deputized militias and against the holocaust in Gaza---always standing in solidarity with national liberation struggles both inside and outside the U.S. Empire. To support herself and her two sons, she worked as a sociology and women's studies lecturer, machinist, journalist and public health expert. During the first ten years of her children's lives, she was on welfare. Arlene Eisen is the author of the influential study, Operation Ghetto Storm, first published by the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement. She is also the author of two books on Vietnamese Women. All are available on her website, https://ArleneEisen.org

IN SESSION #21: Film, imperial machinations & the psyche, oh my! with Mtume Gant
Show notes
I was SO excited to have a dear comrade and incredible filmmaker and professor Mtume Gant on the show for the first time! If you don't know him already from his incredible art, his new film, The Hand that Feeds, or from his co-hosting of The Imperial 80s with our comrade Jared Ware of Millennials Are Killing Capitalism, THIS IS YOUR CHANCE! I was so happy to continue our conversation from his podcast, Within Our Gates, linked below. We explored the ways that cinema and cinematic practices recreate a social order intent on stabilizing imperialism and racial capitalism, get into his new film, and his new writing—let me tell you how excited I am to delve into this!! And, maybe, just maybe, psychoanalysis, of course, the good (ahem, Fanon), the bad, and the seriously hideous.
Mtume Gant is a Filmmaker/Artist, Political Theorist and Educator. He is the director of several films, most recently The Hand that Feeds and an Assistant Professor of Film at Purchase College. He is the host of Within Our Gates podcast where he looks at cinema and the arts from a materialist perspective, as well as the co-host of The Imperial 80's YouTube series, an anti-imperialist analysis of 80's cinema. IN SESSION #40: Urgent report back from Al-Mughayyir w/ Danyal Masoud, Hana Masud & Amin Al-Zaghoul
Show notes
I am releasing this episode out of order because it is an urgent report back from our Palestinian siblings from Al-Mughayyir, one of the Palestinian villages in the West Bank that is incurring increasing state and settler violence (one and the same, we know). Their testimony is moving, as it traces the ongoing asphyxiation of their village, the longstanding policies of attacks on life and life-making, including the ability for folks to sustain their lives through farming, the intrusions on intimate spaces of life, as well as their ongoing resistance and refusals to disappear from the land.
Danyal Masoud is a certified spiritual and life coach with a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Counseling and a Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences. For more than 22 years, her work has centered around children, youth, women, and families, with a deep passion for helping people grow emotionally, spiritually, and relationally. Follow her on IG at: @danyal_pali @danyal.masoud
Hana Masud, MA, PhD is a Palestinian scholar and educator working at the intersection of critical psychology, decolonial inquiry, and social justice scholarship. She co-authored and implemented CURCUM's Trees: A Decolonial Healing Guide for Palestinian Community Health Workers, including training and supervising community health workers in refugee camps in the occupied West Bank, and co-edited the special issue Coloniality Unplugged: Cosmologies and Terrains of the Dark Matter in the Global Journal of Community Psychology Practice (2022). She is also a co-founder of the Project Laban Collective, an emerging diasporic community space for relational care, community knowledge, critical consciousness, organizing, and explorations of sanctuary and world-making.
Amin Al-Zaghoul has served as the head of the Al-Mughayyir Village Council for the past nine years. During his tenure, he has been arrested twice, his home has been raided more than ten times, and his sons have been arrested on more than three occasions. Most recently, his son Jihad Al-Zaghoul was arrested two days ago and remains in detention. He has not yet been released.

IN SESSION #20: Therapy in times of imperial implosion with Melissa Lopez, Naa Adaku & Dana Lopez
Show notes
I am SO excited for this episode to come out on audiostream--if you haven't seen the video yet, definitely check it out. I was joined by some kickass clinician comrades who are all actively thinking through how we defy the carceral logics of the psy-fields, how to resist imperial cooptation, how to push against the seams of normative fuckery, and all the struggles and contradictions inherent to doing the work of therapy. We had a LOT to talk about and I am happy you all get front a row to this conversation I have been wanting to have for a longgggggg time.
Melissa Lopez, aka Mel is a Fat, Queer, Chicanx Femme- She's been an antagonistic and unruly mental health therapist for 21 years. Her practice includes working with people of various interlocking oppressions through an anti imperialist, anti white supremacy lens (she doesn't give one fuck about "evidence based modalities)." Hobbies include pissing off white people, hating on something or another, obsessing over cats, raccoons, & Halloween/horror. The Coven, are the cats and dogs that make up her family.
Naa Adaku is a social worker who likes to giggle alot and calls herself an anti imperialist horse mom. She is known as her neighborhoods friendly rebel in Ghana usually walking barefoot with a pack of dogs surrounding her or riding long distance motocross bikes. Her interests are china-africa relations, anti-blackness, African sovereignty and the eradication of femicide in Africa.
Dana is a social worker, psychotherapist, parent and comrade committed to a better world for all our children and all life on earth. She lives in US-occupied Puerto Rico which is her partner's ancestral home with their child, 2 cats and 7 chickens. Interests are anti-imperialism, disalienating psychotherapy, confronting liberals, feeding people, and quality time with her child and comrades.

Show notes
I sat down with the brilliant Charisse Burden-Stelley, aka, Dr. CBS . We packed so much into this interview, including us shooting the shit toward the end a bit, BUT, the more important things that I am so excited for you all to hear are what we have come to know and appreciate Dr. CBS for, and why she is someone I see and feel practices psychic militancy. We discussed her thoughts about anti-communism in the settler colony of the USA, ongoing anti-Blackness, who she has learned from through her career, and the political demands on us, especially as leftists, in this particular moment.
Dr. Charisse Burden-Stelly is an Associate Professor of African American Studies at Wayne State University and a 2026-2027 Scholar-in-Residence at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. IN SESSION #19: Imperial and Zionist capture of Blackness with Jamal Williams
Show notes
I was so excited to be joined by a new comrade and brother, Jamal Williams. Jamal and I met when he reached out to connect about our shared political values in the decrepit and violent psy-disciplines. From our first discussion, I knew we had a LOT to talk about and more importantly, how it felt vital to share Jamal's work and commitments with the larger community. In this discussion we will get into Jamal's view on how imperialism and Zionism have worked hard to "capture" Blackness in a blackmailed relationally of "solidarity", the important community and political organizing Jamal does, the pressures to be anti-Zionist and anti-imperialist on campuses and in the medical world, and our own ongoing struggle for liberation. I am so excited for you to meet him!
Jamal Williams is a neuroscientist, professor, and child development activist whose work focuses on ADHD, autism, and broader neurodevelopmental processes in children. Williams critically examines the political economy of health and education systems. His scholarship and advocacy interrogate how universities, healthcare institutions, and nonprofit infrastructures extract value from poor and working-class communities while failing to address the structural conditions that produce inequity. He is particularly concerned with the co-optation of marginalized suffering through what he conceptualizes as the "Health Equity Industrial Complex". Williams also explores how health disparities across Black, immigrant, and rural communities are rooted in shared upstream conditions, like housing insecurity, environmental injustice, labor exploitation, and unequal access to resources — rather than isolated group-level deficits. Williams' broader aim is to reframe conversations about health, development, and justice away from individual outcomes and toward collective conditions, advocating for approaches that prioritize material redistribution, community control, and systemic transformation.

Show notes
This was the ultimate lovefest between me and my comrade Nora!! We had a lot to look forward to in this episode which came about as a joke between us after Nora got proposed to in the chat during our first livestream of Tankie Group Therapy. So, in addition to us talking politics and resistance (because of course), we also made a cheeky deal: if Nora got *ten* live proposals during the livestream (narrator: she did not), she would sing a song for us all (narrator: she still did!)…and perhaps also a special guest showed up? This lovefest was meant to (and did) sustain us in the ongoing struggle!

Nick Estes: "Our History is the Future" & Revolutionary Certainty
Show notes
In this episode, I sit down with Nick Estes, our comrade from The Red Nation! We had a lot to talk about, as expected, but I was especially excited to talk to Nick about formative moments in his life that have shaped how he maintains militant alignment with anti-imperialist politics despite the extensive pressures to disidentify from this struggle. We also into his incredible book, "Our History is the Future"; the pitfalls to be aware of as revolutionary energies are siphoned off by systems of power; and, importantly, the commitment to our future as clearly as our present. The conversation felt like a balm, and I hope it wil feel the same to you!
Nick Estes is an enrolled member of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe and is an Associate Professor in American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota. He studies colonialism and global Indigenous histories, focusing on decolonization, oral history, U.S. imperialism, environmental justice, anti-capitalism, and the Oceti Sakowin. Estes is the author of the award-winning book Our History Is the Future: Standing Rock Versus the Dakota Access Pipeline, and the Long Tradition of Indigenous Resistance (2019), which places the Indigenous-led movement to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline into historical context. He co-edited with Jaskiran Dhillon Standing with Standing Rock: Voices from the #NoDAPL Movement (2019), which draws together more than thirty contributors, including leaders, scholars, and activists of the Standing Rock movement, for a reflection of Indigenous history and politics and on the movement's significance. Estes was the American Democracy Fellow at the Charles Warren Center for Studies in History at Harvard University (2017-2018), the Lannan Literary Fellow for non-fiction (2019), and a Marguerite Casey Foundation Freedom Fellow (2020-2021). IN SESSION #14: Fascism in and through psychoanalysis with Carter J. Carter
Show notes
In this episode I am joined by longtime comrade and colleague, Carter J. Carter to talk about their analysis of fascism in psychoanalysis, including why the field was so readily primed for fascistic infiltration. And, as Carter and I always do, we riff, making good fun of the antiquated ways of our field--and the people who believe in neutrality--and all the ways in which we need to be ready for the long struggle.
Carter Carter (they/them) is, in no particular order, a: union organizer; mediocre farmer; psychology professor; local elected official in a tiny town; psychotherapist; writer in various venues, including their Substack Psycho Analyst.

IN SESSION #13: Empire's problem with sovereignty with Helyeh Doutaghi, Bikrum Gill & Alex Aviña
Show notes
Between the so-called Middle-East and Latin America, oh my, we had a lot to talk about how this empire implodes, psychically and otherwise, in the face of sovereign nations refusing to bend to its violence. Who better to help us unpack this than three of the most fierce anti-imperialist comrades I know--all of whom have a lot to say about sovereignty, empire, and, importantly, resistance.
Helyeh Doutaghi is scholar of international law and geopolitical economy. Her research explores the intersections of the Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL), encompassing postcolonial critiques of law, sanctions, and international political economy. Dr. Doutaghi's research draws on the mechanisms, harms, and beneficiaries of the sanctions regime imposed on Iran, centering questions of value transfer and wealth drain. Additionally, she is interested in International Humanitarian Law (IHL), having written about its history, practice, and the production of knowledge (and ignorance), particularly in the context of the US military. She was expelled from Yale Law School and the LPE project for speaking up for Palestinian liberation last year. She is currently a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Tehran, where she will focus on completing her manuscript on the Iranian sanctions regime and neoliberalism.
Bikrum Gill is a scholar of international political economy, and author of "The Political Ecology of Colonial Capitalism: Race, Nature, and Accumulation", published by Manchester University Press.
Alex Aviña is an Associate Professor of History at Arizona State University. He is a historian of Mexico and Latin America.

IN SESSION #11: Psychology, complicity and the myth of neutrality with Maria Fakhouri
Show notes
In this episode, I spoke with Palestinian psychotherapist, Maria Fakhouri, about the lies the field of psychology peddles in the name of so-called neutrality. She and I have quite a bit of experience being on the receiving end of accusations related to being "too political". We discussed what this means against the backdrop of an ongoing genocide, rising fascism, and imperial violence—and we also laughed at the field and our so-called colleagues, a lot. Because if any of you have heard Maria speak, well, you know she brings it!
Maria Fakhouri is a Palestinian psychotherapist based in Ontario, Canada (Turtle Island). She is a public educator, speaker, and fierce advocate for Palestine through her social media and community engagements. She intertwines her therapeutic practice with anti-oppressive, cross-movement liberatory, and social justice principles.
