Today, Dr. Jerry talks through some of the tactics parents can use to set limits with their kids, avoid manipulation and how to keep it calmer while doing so. From grounding to putting getting our kids to do the small things around the house, there’s lots of ways to create better compliance and behavior. Through it all, Dr. Jerry reminds us that it’s not just about getting our kids to follow the rules of our families. Show notes

As they continue the discussion on self-expression, Dr. Jerry and Christina offer great insights from their own parenting and professional experiences. We all want our children to grow up to be healthy, respectful adults. Dr. Jerry and Christina explain that letting our kids explore their identity through clothing and music is part of that process; even if we might feel like our kids' choices aren’t what we would make. Trying new ways of expressing is such an important part of identity formation, and it’s our job as parents to help our kids find out who they’re going to be.

CONTENT WARNING: Please be aware that today’s episode of Raising Families contains discussion of suicide and suicidal ideation.

When Kim and John Turner lost their son Patrick to suicide, they weren’t sure how their family could ever recover. Today, they’re strong mental health advocates who run the foundation Patrick’s Purpose. They join us in this episode to discuss the importance of mental health awareness in teens, and what parents can do to help lower the likelihood that their own children will ever reach the point that Patrick did. From school pressures to personal struggles, there's so much that our teens are dealing with but as parents we can help carry the load.
