Why Not to Depend on a Back Brace for Scoliosis Pain & Posture and What to Do Instead
Episode 45
Show notes
What if the thing helping support your spine is also making you believe your body can’t support itself?
A scoliosis brace can serve an important purpose but stopping a curve from getting worse isn't the same as teaching your body how to move, build strength, manage pain, or feel confident. When treatment becomes focused only on the spine, it's easy to forget the whole person living inside that body.
In this episode of Ruth's Rant, I share my personal experience wearing a hard-shell scoliosis brace at age 14 and explain why I believe scoliosis care needs to go beyond the brace. I explore the difference between using a tool for support and becoming dependent on that tool, while also addressing the emotional side of bracing for both children and adults.
You’ll discover:
• Why stopping scoliosis from progressing is different from teaching your body how to move and build strength.
• How to recognize the difference between appropriately using a brace for support and becoming dependent on it.
• Why the emotional impact of bracing, including frustration, embarrassment, confidence, and body image, deserves to be part of the conversation.Play the episode to rethink what scoliosis treatment can look like and learn how to work toward greater strength, confidence, freedom, and quality of life in the body you have.

Why Back Bracing Can Make Your Scoliosis WORSE, Kill Your Confidence, & Not Reduce Your Back Pain
Episode 44
Show notes
Could a back brace help your scoliosis while negatively affecting your confidence, movement, sleep, and quality of life?
If you or someone you love is navigating scoliosis, you may have heard conflicting advice about whether bracing is necessary. With different brace types, different recommendations, and research that doesn't point to a one-size-fits-all solution, knowing what’s right for you can feel overwhelming.
In this episode, I break down what you actually need to consider before choosing a scoliosis brace and why movement deserves a much bigger role in the conversation.
You’ll discover:
• Why there is no one-size-fits-all approach to scoliosis bracing
• How bracing can affect more than your curves, including mental health, self-image, sleep, movement, and overall quality of life.
• What research says about exercise, core strengthening, muscle asymmetry, and how it compares with bracing for scoliosis.Play the episode to understand your bracing options, make a more informed decision about your scoliosis care, and discover why keeping your body moving can be such a powerful part of your journey.

The Unbelievable Way Your Clothes, Not Your Posture, Are a Real Cause of Scoliosis Back Pain
Episode 43

Are your clothes quietly making your scoliosis pain worse and have you been blaming your body instead of your wardrobe?
If you've ever tolerated a waistband digging into your ribs, a sports bra irritating your shoulder blade, or leggings that leave you desperate to peel them off by lunchtime, this episode is for you. Scoliosis can affect how your body sits, rotates, and moves, which means clothing designed around “average” body shapes may not work for you. I challenge you to stop forcing your body to fit your clothes and start choosing clothes that work with your body.
You’ll discover:
• How to recognize when clothing may be contributing to discomfort, irritation, or restricted movement.
• How to shop and test clothing based on how your body actually moves, not just how an outfit looks standing still.

The Clothes Hiding In Your Closet That Make Your Scoliosis Back Pain Worse
Episode 42
Show notes
Could your favorite clothes be causing more neck, back, and rib pain than you realize?
If you have scoliosis, have you ever put on a cute halter top, strappy sports bra, tight waistband, or pair of compression leggings only to find yourself uncomfortable, or downright hurting, later in the day?
Clothing that looks great on the rack doesn't always work well with a scoliotic body. Curves, rotation, rib flare, winged or hypermobile scapulae, uneven shoulders, and differences in body proportions can make finding comfortable, supportive clothing surprisingly difficult.
In this episode, we’re talking honestly about the clothing choices that can create unnecessary discomfort and what to look for instead. From halter tops and criss-cross sports bras to underwires, restrictive bands, and high-compression yoga pants, you’ll learn how to pay attention to what your body is telling you and find options that actually work for your unique shape.
In this episode, you’ll discover:
• Why those cute strappy tops and underwire bras are a no go for scoliosis.
• How fit and compression matter to rib flare, asymmetry, or sensitive areas of your spine and torso.
• Your clothes should work with your body, not make your pain worse.Ready to rethink your wardrobe? Press play to discover how small changes in the clothes you wear can help you identify unnecessary sources of discomfort and find options that feel better on your unique scoliosis body.

The Top 3 Movements You NEED To Do To Improve Posture & Relieve Back Pain With Scoliosis
Show notes
When was the last time you hung, squatted, or simply played?
If you have scoliosis, you already know that finding comfortable positions and moving freely isn't always easy. In this Ruth's Rant, I explain why I believe people with scoliosis may benefit from finding more opportunities to lengthen and decompress their spines throughout the day.
You’ll discover:
• Why hanging, playing, squatting, and getting down on the floor can improve posture & relieve back pain.
• Why creating opportunities to lengthen and decompress the spine can be valuable in decreasing back pain with scoliosis.
