Sobriety Snippets for Women Over 40 - Alcohol-free living, nervous-system calm, and real talk for women over 40.

Education, Health & Fitness, Mental Health, Self-Improvement

What if quitting drinking isn't about giving something up — but finally coming home to yourself?

Sobriety Snippets is the podcast for women over 40 who are done using wine to cope and ready to feel calm, clear, and free without it. In short, honest episodes (with plenty of warmth and a little humor), host Becca Jacobson helps you understand your cravings, calm your nervous system, and quiet the anxiety and racing thoughts that alcohol used to numb.

This isn't about willpower or white-knuckling. It's about the deeper work — shifting your identity, regulating your emotions, and becoming the woman who simply doesn't need alcohol anymore. Whether you're sober-curious, starting over (again), or years in and craving something richer, you'll find a seat here.

Becca is a retired professor turned sobriety mentor who's walked this road herself. Three times a week, she offers the kind of grounded, soulful guidance that meets you exactly where you are.

A note from Becca: "If you're ready to stop drinking, calm your body, and rediscover who you are underneath it all — come walk beside me."

  1. The 3 AM Heebie-Jeebies: What Happens When You Finally Face Your Feelings

    Episode 399

    Show notes

How to sit with uncomfortable emotions sober is a skill that can change your life from the inside out, even when nothing on the outside changes.

In this heartfelt conversation, Becca welcomes Barb, 73, who had already stopped drinking but was still waking up at 3 AM with racing thoughts, regrets, and self-judgment. She wanted relief from the mental chatter that had followed her for years. What she discovered was that putting down the wine was only the beginning.

Barb shares how she moved beyond reading self-help books and understanding things intellectually to actually doing the emotional work. You'll hear how facing uncomfortable feelings, questioning your thoughts, and letting go of perfectionism helped her find a deeper sense of peace. She also talks about learning to slow down, soften her to-do-list obsession, and stop treating every thought as the truth.

And yes, there's a wonderfully memorable conversation about the "meat suit" and what our own mortality can teach us about gratitude and living fully.

If you've been waiting for your mind to quiet down before you can feel at peace, settle in and listen to Barb's story. You may discover that the peace you've been looking for is closer than you think.

  2. How to Make Affirmations Actually Work for Your Sobriety

    Episode 401

    Show notes

How to become someone who doesn't drink starts with learning to believe in the woman you're becoming, even before you can fully see her in your life.

Have you ever tried affirmations, repeated a few positive words, and wondered why nothing changed? You're not alone, my dear. In this Friday Snippet, Becca shares why affirmations can fall flat when you don't believe them or feel anything behind the words.

Drawing on the teachings of Florence Scovel Shinn, Becca walks you through three essential pieces of a meaningful affirmation: choosing words you can believe, connecting them to genuine emotion, and using visualization to bring your future self to life.

You'll discover how a simple statement like “I am resilient” can help you reconnect with your strength, even after you've tried to quit drinking more times than you'd care to count. Becca also shares how she visualized the success of Sobriety Snippets before the podcast even existed—and why you can begin creating your own next chapter the same way.

No pretending, no forcing, and definitely no white-knuckling. Just a little imagination, an open heart, and faith in what's possible.

Settle in, my dear, and discover how to start practicing the identity you're ready to grow into.

  3. The Words Keeping You Stuck in Your Drinking Habits (And What to Say Instead)

    Episode 400

    Show notes

How to change your relationship with alcohol starts with something you might not expect: the words you use to talk to yourself. And, my dear, some of those words could use a little editing!

In this 700th-episode celebration week, Becca shares five more Snippet Land bylaws inspired by Florence Scovel Shinn's Your Word Is Your Wand. These aren't rules for being a perfect person. They're invitations to notice how your thoughts and language shape the way you see yourself and what's possible.

You'll explore why catastrophizing makes hard moments feel even harder, how words like “always” and “never” keep you stuck, and why you need to be careful about what follows those two little words: “I am.” Becca also unpacks mind reading, predicting doom, and the difference between having a thought and believing it's the absolute truth.

What if “I need a drink” became “I'm having a thought that a drink would help”? What if you replaced “I should know better by now” with a kinder, more useful question?

You don't have to shame yourself into change. You can begin by speaking to yourself differently, one thought at a time. Settle in, my dear, and listen for the words you're ready to change.

  4. The 5 Snippet Land Bylaws: Stop Beating Yourself Up and Let People Help

    Episode 398

    Show notes

Personal growth after quitting drinking isn't about getting everything right. It's about learning to treat yourself differently, especially when the journey gets messy.

In this episode, Becca lays down five official Snippet Land bylaws, and yes, there may be imaginary violation tickets involved. First, no negative self-talk. Second, visit your past to heal it, but don't move back in. Third, practice imperfection, because sobriety isn't a neat little project with a tidy finish date. Fourth, let yourself be silly. You don't have to wait until every problem is solved before you allow yourself a little joy. And fifth, stop trying to do this alone.

You'll hear why broken promises don't have to mean failure, how learning from your experiences helps you move forward, and why inviting another person into your journey can bring such tremendous relief. Becca shares a little of her own struggle with independence and the freedom that came when she finally asked for help.

If you've been trying to figure everything out on your own, consider this your friendly reminder that you don't have to. Settle in, enjoy a little Snippet Land silliness, and listen with an open heart.

  5. Your Best Chapter Is Waiting for You (Even If You Can't Imagine It Yet)

    Episode 397

    Show notes

Personal growth after quitting drinking can take you somewhere you never imagined, even when you have no idea what comes next. If you're over 40 and wondering whether your best years are behind you, my dear, I want you to hear this story.

In this deeply personal episode, Becca shares the three distinct chapters of her life: her years in the sex trade, her career as a college professor while struggling with alcohol, and her unexpected leap into sobriety mentoring. Each new chapter began without a clear picture of what the future would hold. She simply knew something needed to change.

Becca gets honest about depression, shame, binge drinking, the terrifying experience of nearly losing everything she'd worked for, and the gradual realization that even a successful life can stop feeling like your own. She also shares how leaving the security of academia led her toward a life that feels more meaningful and alive.

Here's the heart of it: you don't have to figure out your entire future before you begin. You just need to take the first step, get the support you need, and allow yourself to grow into the woman you're becoming.

Settle in, take a deep breath, and come listen. Your next chapter may surprise you.

  6. The Missing Pieces in Your Quit Drinking Plan

    Episode 396

    Show notes

Learning how to stop drinking for good takes more than deciding which days you'll drink and which days you won't. If you've made promises to yourself that somehow fell apart by Wednesday afternoon, you know that a plan on paper isn't always enough.

In this episode, Becca shares why her own quit drinking plans repeatedly failed and what she now understands about creating a plan that actually supports you. It's not just about avoiding alcohol. It's about recognizing the voice of alcohol, understanding your emotional patterns, calming your activated nervous system, and learning how to respond when life gets uncomfortable.

You'll discover why keeping your plans to yourself can leave you struggling alone, how small wins begin rebuilding the self-trust that repeated disappointments have chipped away at, and why expecting yourself to simply white-knuckle your way through sobriety misses the bigger picture.

Your next chapter isn't about becoming a woman who fights herself every day. It's about becoming a woman who knows how to care for herself emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually.

You have so much life ahead of you, my dear. Come listen, and let's talk about building a plan that supports the woman you're becoming, one ordinary day at a time.

  7. Why Drinking Feels Like Your Own Private Hell (And How to Find Your Way Out)

    Episode 395

    Show notes

A sober identity shift begins when you stop asking what's wrong with you and start seeing your relationship with alcohol with more compassion. If you're a capable, educated woman over 40 who shows up for everyone else but feels powerless around wine, you know how lonely that inner struggle can be.

In this snippet, Becca shares why the clash between the woman you know yourself to be and the woman who keeps drinking can feel like a private hell. That gap often breeds shame, confusion, and isolation. But what if there's nothing uniquely wrong with you? What if you simply respond to alcohol differently, and you can stop spending years searching for a why that may never give you the relief you're looking for?

You'll explore how to loosen the grip of self-blame, why repeatedly breaking promises to yourself chips away at your confidence, and how small, ordinary wins can begin rebuilding self-trust. Lasting change isn't about beating yourself up or relying on willpower alone. It's about taking meaningful action and getting the support you need.

If you're tired of feeling divided against yourself, take a breath, give yourself some grace, and listen in. You don't have to figure this out alone.

  8. You're Already Telling Yourself Lies—Start Choosing Better Ones

    Episode 394

    Show notes

Sobriety and self discovery begin when you question the stories you've been telling yourself about who you are and what you're worth. If you've ever felt ashamed of your drinking, wondered what's wrong with you, or believed you're somehow less worthy than other people, this conversation is for you, my dear.

Becca gets personal about the painful beliefs she carried from her own past, including addiction, isolation, and hiding her drinking. She knows how easily those experiences can become an identity you mistake for the truth.

But what if those harsh inner voices are the real lies? And what if you could intentionally choose a different story?

In this snippet, you'll explore how affirmations, imagination, and a little willingness can help you begin changing your internal narrative. Becca offers a simple practice: choose one or two statements that make your heart sing, even if they feel impossible right now. Imagine what it would feel like if they were true, and gently redirect yourself when the old voice pipes up. (It can have a seat. It doesn't need the microphone.)

You don't have to force yourself into sobriety through shame or willpower. You can begin by believing that a different life is possible.

Take a breath, open your mind a little, and listen in.

  9. You Don’t Have to Imagine Forever Without Alcohol — Just Start Here

    Episode 393

    Show notes

How to stop drinking for good doesn't mean you have to figure out the rest of your life without alcohol today. It means learning to come back to the moment you're actually living.

Have you ever tried to imagine never drinking again and felt a wave of fear, emptiness, or even panic? Becca knows that feeling, and in this episode, she explains why thinking about forever can become one of alcohol's sneakiest traps.

You'll learn to recognize the voice of alcohol when it starts asking, "What about your birthday? The holidays? The rest of your life?" Instead of arguing with those thoughts or trying to convince yourself that you'll be fine forever, you can practice a gentler response: I don't know about tomorrow, but today, I can choose not to drink.

Becca also explores why knowing what to do isn't the same as practicing it. Returning to the present takes patience, consistency, self-compassion, and sometimes the support of another woman who can help you see what's happening when you get pulled back into old thinking.

You don't have to solve forever. You just have to work with today, one ordinary moment at a time.

Come spend a few minutes with Becca, and discover what might change when you stop worrying about forever and start living right here, right now.

  10. What If You Could Enjoy the Holidays Without the Usual Drinking Worry?

    Episode 392

    Show notes

How to stop drinking for good might look different than you think, especially when the holidays are right around the corner. What if you didn't have to spend November and December wrestling with guilt, worrying about your drinking, and hoping that January 1st would somehow be different?

In this episode, Becca shares a new approach for women over 40 who know alcohol isn't serving them anymore but aren't sure how to navigate the holiday season. Instead of putting your drinking concerns on the back burner or demanding that you quit immediately, you can create an intentional plan, practice new responses to triggers, and build confidence through small moments of change.

You'll hear why the deeper goal isn't simply to stop drinking, but to reclaim the peace, self-trust, and contentment you've been missing. Becca also introduces her free October 23–25 workshop, where you'll build a personalized plan for the holidays with the goal of quitting on January 1, 2027, and explore ongoing support through Juicy January.

You don't have to figure everything out today, my dear. Come listen, take a deep breath, and discover a gentler way forward.

  11. Why Do You Keep Starting Over With Sobriety? Time to Get It Off the Back Burner

    Episode 391

    Show notes

Why do you keep starting over with sobriety? If you've been putting your drinking on the back burner while life, work, family, and everyone else's needs take priority, my dear, you're not alone. And you might be tired of hearing yourself promise that this time will be different.

In this Friday Snippet, you'll hear why gathering up your gumption, trying harder, and repeating the same old strategies can leave you right back where you started. Becca shares her own 30-plus-year journey with alcohol, including the hard truth that even treatment wasn't the final answer for her.

This isn't about shaming yourself into getting your priorities straight or squeezing more willpower out of an already exhausted woman. It's about looking honestly at what you've tried, recognizing what hasn't worked, and being willing to explore something new.

You'll also hear a practical weekend exercise: make a list of every strategy you've tried to change your relationship with alcohol, then use that list to start thinking differently about your next steps. You don't have to abandon the rest of your life to prioritize your wellbeing.

Come spend a few minutes with Becca, get curious about what's possible, and consider what might change when your sobriety finally gets a front-row seat.

  12. Change Yourself, and Your Drinking Will Follow

    Episode 390

    Show notes

How to change your relationship with alcohol starts with changing your relationship with yourself.

In this episode, you’ll hear the story behind the message at the top of Becca’s website: “Change yourself, your drinking will follow.” And she means it quite literally.

Rather than making alcohol the center of your sobriety journey, you’re invited to look underneath the drinking—to the automatic reactions, stress patterns, resentment, emotional habits, and old stories that keep you stuck. As you become more self-aware, your relationship with alcohol can begin to change without making every day a battle of “I’m not drinking… yes, I am… no, I’m not.”

But there’s another surprising piece: when you change yourself, your relationships can change too. You may find yourself responding differently, softening old resentments, creating healthier boundaries, and moving through life with more peace and less resistance.

You don’t have to change everyone else or fix every circumstance. Start with you, one small moment at a time.

So settle in, listen, and cue the Snippet Land shimmy.

  13. It’s Never Too Late to Become Who You Might Have Been

    Episode 389

    Show notes

Sobriety and self discovery can open a door you may not even realize has been waiting for you.

In this episode, you’re invited to look beyond simply getting alcohol out of your life and into the deeper question: Who are you becoming now?

Drawing on George Eliot’s beautiful reminder that “it is never too late to be what you might have been,” Becca explores what it really means to build your best chapter after 40. Not by rearranging your circumstances, finding the perfect new career, moving across the country, or finally getting everyone else to behave. (Wouldn’t that be convenient?)

Instead, you’ll hear why lasting change begins inside—with self-awareness, emotional growth, acceptance, and small, gentle daily practices that make room for something new to emerge.

You don’t have to know exactly who your future self is before you begin. You simply have to become quiet enough, curious enough, and willing enough to discover who might be waiting there.

Take a breath, settle in, and listen.

    Episode 388

    Show notes

How to change your relationship with alcohol may have less to do with alcohol itself than you’ve been led to believe. What if the identity you’ve built from your past is quietly shaping what you expect from yourself today?

In this episode, Becca explores the surprising connection between your memories, your identity, and the way you show up in your life. She shares how labels like “alcoholic” became part of her own identity for decades—and how growing new identities eventually changed what was possible for her.

You’ll think about the stories you carry from your past, the meaning you’ve attached to them, and what might happen if you stopped treating those old stories as instructions for your future.

This isn’t about pretending the past didn’t happen. It’s about changing your relationship with it so it no longer gets to drag you around like an unwanted suitcase.

If you’ve ever wondered why simply deciding to quit hasn’t been enough, this conversation will give you something deeper to consider. Take a listen and get curious about the woman you’re becoming.

How to become someone who doesn't drink starts with something deeper than simply deciding not to pick up a glass. It starts with looking at the identity you’ve built around yourself—and questioning whether it’s still serving you.

If you’ve tried to quit drinking over and over, you may have quietly started believing that you’re the woman who always fails, can’t be trusted, or will eventually drink again. Becca invites you to look at those beliefs with fresh eyes.

You’ll hear why the words you use about yourself matter, how negative self-talk can reinforce an identity you’ve outgrown, and why celebrating your progress isn’t something you need to be afraid of. You’ll also explore the idea that sobriety can become a journey of self-discovery—not a lifetime sentence of trying not to drink.

This is about becoming someone new, not fighting with the old version of you forever. So take a breath, get curious about who you believe you are, and listen in.

  16. When Your Partner Still Drinks: How Do You Stay Sober?

    Episode 386

    Show notes

How to quit drinking when your partner still drinks is a very real question, especially when you're in those vulnerable early months of sobriety. What happens when the person you live with can have one glass of wine and walk away, while you know one glass could turn into a whole different story?

In this episode, you’ll hear Becca’s personal experience of getting sober while her husband still drank—and how different things became once alcohol was no longer running her life. She talks honestly about asking your partner to keep alcohol out of the house, the difference between support and trying to make someone your sober coach, and what it might mean when a partner refuses to make even that small accommodation.

You’ll also hear why this gets especially complicated when your partner may have their own relationship with alcohol.

If you’re navigating sobriety with a drinking partner under the same roof, settle in. This one gives you plenty to think about—and maybe a little reassurance, too.

If you’re wondering where to begin, email Becca at becca@beccajacobson.com and simply say, “How do I start?” No big explanation needed. Just start the conversation, and see where it takes you.

  17. Don’t Believe Everything You Think About Drinking

    Episode 385

    Show notes

Quit drinking mindset shift can begin with something surprisingly simple: learning not to believe everything you think. When your mind tells you, “I can’t quit drinking,” or drags you back through old memories, fears, and familiar stories, you don't have to argue with every thought. You can notice it, take a breath, and let it fly on by.

In this episode, you’ll connect the dots between thoughts, emotions, resistance, and the actions that keep old patterns going. You’ll also hear why “I’ve tried everything” may be one of those thoughts worth questioning—and how choosing one simple phrase can help you return to center when your mind starts running the show.

Becca brings together the ideas from this week’s episodes on non-resistance and William Blake’s “mind-forged manacles,” with a very practical invitation: become more intentional about which thoughts you give your time and energy.

Take a breath, let the bird fly over, and listen.

  18. The Chains You’re Forging in Your Own Mind

    Episode 384

    Show notes

Sober identity shift isn’t just about deciding not to drink. It’s about noticing the thoughts, fears, and stories that can keep you feeling chained to the old way of living.

In this midweek Snippet, Becca takes you into a powerful line from William Blake’s poem London: “the mind-forged manacles I hear.” What do handcuffs forged by the mind have to do with sobriety? Quite a lot, actually.

You’ll explore how resistance and repeated negative thoughts can become mental chains—especially when your mind keeps circling around alcohol, fear, difficulty, and “I can’t.” Becca invites you to loosen that grip instead of fighting yourself every step of the way.

You don’t have to pretend everything is wonderful. You don’t have to love where you are. You can simply take a breath, accept this moment, and leave some room for change.

So loosen your grip, open your hands, and come listen.

  19. What If You Stopped Fighting Alcohol?

    Episode 383

    Show notes

How to change your relationship with alcohol may begin with something surprisingly simple: stopping the fight.

In this Snippet, you’ll explore the idea of resistance—and what happens when you stop pushing so hard against the things you wish weren’t there. Becca shares a lesson from Florence Scovel Shinn’s The Game of Life and How to Play It: instead of resisting a difficulty, try blessing it, accepting it, or simply allowing it to be there without adding the extra layer of “Oh no, not this again.”

You’ll look at how resistance can make alcohol even bigger in your mind, keeping your attention locked on what you’re trying not to do. And you’ll practice a small shift: take a breath, soften your face, and let the moment be what it is.

You don’t have to love the difficulty. You don’t have to pretend it’s easy. You’re simply learning not to fight yourself through it.

Take a breath, and come listen.

  20. You Can Grow Without Being So Serious About It

    Episode 382

    Show notes

Personal growth after quitting drinking can feel uncomfortable, but it doesn't have to feel grim. In this Snippet, you’re reminded that growth and joy can exist at the same time—even when you’re still figuring out what comes next.

Becca shares what it was like near the end of her drinking career, when she had become so worried, weary, and serious about her struggle that she could barely smile. She believed that lightheartedness somehow meant she wasn't taking her drinking problem seriously enough. Looking back, she can see how much that mindset kept her stuck.

You’ll hear why relaxing into the present moment isn't giving up, and why having faith in your ability to find a way forward can help you loosen your grip. You’ll also hear about two women who took uncomfortable action this week—and what happened when they did.

So today, take a breath. Unpucker. Look at something with wonder. And give yourself permission to smile while you grow. Listen in, my dear.
