Spicy Brain

Health & Fitness, Mental Health, Personal Journals, Society & Culture

Spicy Brain is the podcast host Lara Sullivan wished existed when she was diagnosed with autism as an adult.

Each week, Lara welcomes guests from across the neurodivergent community for thoughtful conversations that challenge stereotypes, celebrate differences, and highlight the humour and joy that only come from shared life experiences.

Spicy Brain is for those diagnosed later in life, those still seeking clarity, or allies of neurodivergent children who want to better understand the world around them.

  1. Dr Jessica Agnew-Blais: ADHD & THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE | PMDD, Hormones & ADHD in Women

    Episode 18

    Show notes

In this episode of Spicy Brain, host Lara Sullivan is joined by Dr Jessica Agnew-Blais, ADHD researcher at Queen Mary University of London, to explore how ADHD shows up in women and what the menstrual cycle has to do with it.

For decades, ADHD research was built almost entirely on boys. Jess’s work is changing that. She leads the MAAM study (Measuring Adult ADHD and Menstruation), which tracked women with ADHD every day for three months to find out whether their symptoms get worse at certain points in the cycle, and whether their medication stops working before their period. Jess also co-led research finding that women with ADHD are more than three times as likely to meet the criteria for PMDD.

    The episode explores:
🌶️ Why girls and women with ADHD have been missed for so long
🌶️ How ADHD presents differently in girls, from cartwheels to internal restlessness
🌶️ Can you grow out of ADHD? Why symptoms change across your life
🌶️ Late diagnosis after university, new jobs and having a baby
🌶️ The menstrual cycle explained, and why the luteal phase hits so hard
🌶️ Why ADHD medication can stop working before your period
🌶️ Hormonal contraception, anaemia and brain fog
🌶️ PMS vs PMDD, and the link between ADHD and PMDD
🌶️ Inside the MAAM study and what researchers hope to find

The results aren’t out yet, but Jess will be back on Spicy Brain once they are.

Tune in for a fascinating conversation about ADHD, hormones and why women deserve better research.

  4. Millie Gooch: ALCOHOL & THE NEURODIVERGENT BRAIN | Hangxiety, Addiction & Going Sober

    Episode 15

    Show notes

In this episode of Spicy Brain, host Lara Sullivan is joined by Millie Gooch, founder of Sober Girl Society and author of Hangxiety: How Alcohol Messes with Your Mind, for an honest conversation about alcohol and the neurodivergent brain.

Millie started drinking at university, where alcohol became the thing that switched off her brain, gave her confidence and helped her feel “normal”. Years of blackouts and days-long hangovers later, she went sober at 26. It took another seven years and a psychiatric assessment for her book to find out she is autistic and ADHD. Looking back, so much of it suddenly made sense.

    The episode explores:
🌶️ Why alcohol can feel like a shortcut to a neurotypical brain
🌶️ What actually happens in your brain when you drink, and the next day
🌶️ Hangxiety, rumination and why hangovers hit neurodivergent people harder
🌶️ Blackouts, memory and “drunk words are sober thoughts”
🌶️ ADHD, impulsivity and why stopping at two drinks is so hard
🌶️ The “addictive personality” myth and why neurodivergent people are overrepresented in addiction settings
🌶️ The alcohol industry, “drink responsibly” and what other countries do differently
    🌶️ Sobriety vs self-optimisation culture
🌶️ Practical first steps if you want to change your relationship with alcohol

Whether you’ve already stopped, are thinking about cutting back, or have never understood why alcohol hits you so hard, this is a judgement-free look at how your drinking might be connected to your neurodivergence.

Tune in for a conversation full of science, lived experience and a lot of nodding along.

  8. Amber Macintosh: NUTRITION AND NEURODIVERGENCE | Understanding Safe Foods

    Episode 11

    Show notes

Why are safe foods so often beige, and what does that tell us about neurodivergence?

In this episode of The Spicy Brain Podcast, host Lara Sullivan sits down with ADHD nutrition coach Amber Macintosh to explore the complex relationship between neurodivergence, food and nutrition. As an autistic and ADHD woman herself, Amber shares her journey to diagnosis and how understanding her own sensory needs shaped the way she now supports other neurodivergent people.

Together, they explore why safe foods are so often carb-based, how sensory sensitivities and dopamine-seeking behaviours can influence what we eat, and why nutrition advice needs to be practical and tailored to each person's individual needs. They also discuss blood sugar, the gut-brain connection, the importance of protein and key nutrients, and how to approach food during periods of autistic burnout.

    This episode explores:
🌶️ Why food and nutrition can be particularly complicated for neurodivergent people
🌶️ The connection between ADHD, autism and sensory sensitivities around food
🌶️ Why safe foods are often carb-based

🌶️ Making food more accessible during autistic burnout
🌶️ The relationship between neurodivergence, disordered eating and eating disorders
🌶️ Why ‘fed is better than not fed’ when capacity is low

Tune in for a compassionate conversation about nutrition and neurodivergence, and how small, realistic changes can help us better support our brains and bodies without getting lost in the nutrition rabbit hole.

In this episode of The Spicy Brain Podcast, host Lara Sullivan shares her deeply personal story of being diagnosed with autism at the age of 27, reflecting on the experiences that led her to seek answers and how that diagnosis reshaped her life.

Lara begins by exploring her time during the COVID-19 lockdowns, where she found herself unexpectedly thriving in a quieter, more predictable environment. As life returned to normal, however, she struggled with anxiety and depression, prompting her to question why readjustment felt so overwhelming compared to others.
