  1. 251. How to Manage Irritability, Intense Emotions and Judgment in Inner Autumn (Alexandra & Sjanie)

    Season 18, Episode 251

    Show notes

Today we’re continuing our series about the limits of the four inner seasons of the menstrual cycle, and exploring these limits less as a problem that needs to be fixed, and more as a gateway to accessing the power of each cycle phase.

So far we’ve discussed the pre-ovulation and ovulation phases - inner spring and summer - and it’s time for us to get into the premenstrual phase, which is a cycle hotspot for many of us.

Alexandra and Sjanie describe their own experience of the core limit of inner autumn, the reduction in energy and capacity, which can create a kind of reactive, hyper-critical sharpness in our minds and we become attuned to what isn’t working around us. In other words, everything becomes so annoying, and it’s very hard not to tell everyone around us just how annoying they are.

We explore how, when we slow down in ourselves and honour this natural limit, we’re more able to access the benefit of this mental sharpness, in the form of a profound kind of discerning truth-telling and intuitive knowing.

    We explore:

    • How to reframe your premenstrual irritability from a problem to endure, into a potent invitation into a vital sense of connection with your deep self, and your human needs.
    • The necessity of allowing and feeling the intense emotions that can rise up in the second half of the cycle - even amidst the busyness of life - and how to hold ourselves if old trauma arises.
    • How, in the premenstrual phase, we become lightning conductors releasing the charge in the field around us; for our children, our families, our communities or our workplace - and what to do when our disruption triggers people around us.

  2. 250. The Grit of Perimenopause, aka Getting Fit For Menopause (Sjane and Alexandra)

    Season 18, Episode 250

    Show notes

Today we’re talking about the reality of the grittiness of the forties; the physical health challenges, the emotional intensity, the responsibilities, the overwhelm, the stress. And we also explore how the forties are also a meaningful preparation for the great spiritual awakening and initiation of menopause.

Sjanie and Sophie share their personal stories from this life phase, which we call the Quickening at Red School, and we explore how to practically navigate the challenges that come up including; how to manage our energy, find nervous system regulation inside the fullness of life, hold the tension with intense reactivity and grow the emotional muscles to be inside the many mini death-and-rebirth moments of perimenopause.

    We explore:

    • How to work with the uncertainty that can come from shifting menstrual cycles in your forties, and what to do when you find yourself outside of the map of the inner seasons.
    • Sophie’s story of working with perimenopause rage, and how we can all re-write the stories we’ve been telling ourselves about ourselves, and claim fuller responsibility for our lives.
    • The importance of finding ways to slow everything down, even if it’s just inside yourself, when you’re navigating the edges of perimenopause.

    Season 18, Episode 249

    Show notes

Over the past week, I’ve been sitting with women going through or on the other side of menopause hearing their profound insights about the spiritual gifts of their menopause process for our Spiritual Power of Menopause series.

And today we’re sharing one of our conversations here on the podcast - with internationally-acclaimed yoga teacher, author, and public speaker, Seane Corn. Seane has been at the forefront of yoga, activism, and community service for over thirty years. She’s now dedicated to challenging cultural narratives about menopause, reframing it from a physical decline to a sacred spiritual initiation and rebirth.

    • How Seane confronted internalised misogyny around midlife and aging

    • How her Yoga practice supported her to do the menopause shadow work of releasing outgrown identities

  4. 248. Healing The Motherwound in Menopause (Bethany Webster)

    Season 18, Episode 248

    Show notes

It’s world menopause awareness month and today we’re sharing a conversation that Alexandra and Sjanie had with the brilliant writer, international speaker and transformational coach Bethany Webster a couple of Octobers ago for the Wise Power retreat, all about healing the ‘Motherwound’ in menopause.

At Red School we’re busy preparing our Spiritual Power of Menopause conversation series which is starting next week, as well as Alexandra and Sjanie’s popular free three-day menopause event: How to Awaken The Power of Menopause, which will also serve as an introduction to the Menopause: The Great Awakener course. It all starts on October 12th and you can register for free at http://redschoolmenopause.com.

Bethany sat down with me and very generously shared her story of perimenopause healing and transformation for the upcoming Spiritual Power of Menopause series, and her conversation is coming up on day five, called: Perimenopause - A Defiance in Service to Love…

But for now, let’s hear from her about how her personal understanding of the Motherwound impacted her in the approach to menopause, how menopause can help us to make peace with our mothers, and how to cultivate a meaningful inner mothering practice.

    We explore:

    • How Bethany's personal understanding of the Motherwound is impacting her in the approach to menopause, inspiring her to negotiate a new relationship with power and truth.

    • How menopause can help us to make peace with our mothers and release the residues of the messages we unconsciously received from them.

    • How to start the work of healing the Motherwound at menopause, and cultivate a meaningful inner mothering practice.

  5. 247. How Menopause Makes us Leaders for These Times (Alexandra & Sjanie)

    Season 18, Episode 247

    Show notes

It’s the first day of world menopause month, and we’re continuing to re-write the cultural narrative around menopause, by exploring the connection between psycho-spiritual initiation of menopause and leadership. Especially the kind of emergent, relational, responsive leadership that is needed in our world today.

In Alexandra and Sjanie’s book, Wise Power, they share that menopause is a training ground in power, where we can learn how to lead from a place of vulnerable humility, holding the tension with complexity, uncertainty, and ambiguity. What could be more needed in the coming decade which will demand new levels of creativity, courage and leadership from us all?

    We explore:

    • The menopause shadow work that enables us to fully face our inner critics, so that we can own our strengths and our blind spots.

    • How to navigate the dark night of the soul that can come in menopause without getting lost to bitterness and resentment, and whilst staying open to life in all it’s messy fullness.

    • How menopause ultimately helps us to unashamedly love what we’re good at, recognize our limits and blind spots and liberate ourselves to live and share our unique gifts

  6. 246. How to Grow an Intuitive, Cyclical Business - Replay (Sjanie & Sophie)

    Season 18, Episode 246

    Show notes

Today we’re flipping the script and replaying an interview from a couple of years ago where Sjanie interviewed Sophie about her experience of bringing cycle awareness to the world of business.

When she’s not hosting this podcast, Sophie is a business coach and strategist. She brings two decades of business experience as a Yoga teacher, filmmaker, non-profit communications director and women’s network founder to support business leaders to thrive.

Today she shares how her own menstrual cycle awareness practice transformed all aspects of her life, including her approach to work, and how she weaves cyclical wisdom into her strategy work. She shares the three core challenges that she sees entrepreneurs facing, and cyclical approaches to experiencing more ease, confidence, creativity and aligned expansion in business.

    We explore:

    • The wild night of pre-menstrual rage that changed everything for Sophie; her career, her country of residence and her relationship.
    • What late night breast-feeding dreaming taught Sophie about how to run a thriving, sustainable, impactful business.
    • Why we all need to connect more to the 99.9% of life on earth that is cyclical, rather than the 0.01% of human culture that is largely governed by an all-too-linear and rational linear obsession with non-stop productivity.

  7. 245. The Sacred Sites of Menarche, Menstruation, Matrescence & Menopause (Alexandra & Sjanie)

    Season 18, Episode 245

    Show notes

Last week we gathered in person with twenty-eight of the graduates of the Menstruality Leadership Programme for an in-person retreat, where we focused on healing our experiences of menarche - our first periods.

In today’s conversation I asked Alexandra and Sjanie to share one of the powerful teachings from the retreat, which is a new way of understanding menstrual cycle awareness as a spiritual life path, by seeing the different key experiences in the menstruality life arc as sacred sites.

We explore how the key initiatory experiences of menstruality - menarche, menstruation, matrescence (if we’re able to or choose to have children) and menopause - as sacred sites which have been desecrated by hundreds of years of the menstrual cycle being denigrated, ignored, dismissed and shamed. And we take a metaphorical walk through each site, dreaming into how we can each re-sanctify them in our own lives, and how this ripples out into the world.

    We explore:

    • Menstrual cycle awareness as the key way to resanctify the sacred site of menstruation.
    • The conversation that each of us must have with our wise selves in menopause, as a way to declare the sacredness and meaning within our experience.
    • Healing your menarche experience, by finding the grit in the oyster shell of your experience around your first period, and tracking how it has become the pearl of your calling.

  8. 244: Matrifocal Leadership and Sustainable, Cyclical Productivity (Lella Sá)

    Season 18, Episode 244

    Show notes

When Lella Sá was seven years old, she learned to meditate with her grandmother, which was the beginning of a spiritual journey that has guided her through multiple expressions of her calling; from modeling, to event management, to biographical counselling, to motherhood, to running a Waldorf school. She now serves as a culture change and productivity consultant focused on what she calls Matrifocial Leadership.

Today we explore how Lella’s in-depth practice of menstrual cycle awareness influences and inspires her work supporting women to lead through Maitrifocal practices that honour life. We chat about what could become possible if we all embodied this life-affirming form of leadership, personally and collectively, as well as some of the obstacles that get in the way.

    We explore:

    • How to work in sync with our biology, our biography and our responsibility as humans living in this epoch, by embodying the wisdom of ‘life before performance’.
    • How cycle awareness and aligning with natural rhythms helps us to cultivate a new, healthy relationship with time, by using our bodies as leadership infrastructure.
    • How indigenous cyclical wisdom can teach us about the practice of sufficiency, which is vital to putting life at the centre of our work, and to work through stewardship and collaboration instead of domination and competition.

  9. 243. The Menstrual Cycle, Midlife and Metabolic Health (Lara Briden)

    Season 17, Episode 243

    Show notes

Today we’re welcoming back our most popular guest on the Menstruality podcast, naturopathic doctor, Lara Briden, who has previously offered holistic health guidance for menstrual, perimenopause and menopause health challenges which has helped thousands of our listeners. Today we’re geeking out about a vitally important, but often misunderstood aspect of our physical and mental health.

As Lara describes, we’re experiencing a global crisis in metabolic health on the planet today, with over 40% of people in many countries living with insulin resistance, which has serious health implications throughout the body. In our conversation today we explore what’s at the root of these metabolic challenges, how they are impacting us - particularly when it comes to menstrual challenges and menopause - and most importantly, why it’s not our fault.

Lara speaks to the systemic issues that have given birth to this health crisis, and some practical ways to create lifestyle shifts to move towards better metabolic health, as well as turn the ship around collectively when it comes to our food systems, endocrine disrupting ‘forever’ chemicals and ultra-processed food. These shifts are especially important for those dealing with menstrual health challenges, or navigating the life transitions of perimenopause and menopause, as well as pregnancy and post-partum if they are part of our path.

    We explore:

    • The complex interplay of insulin resistance and women’s health, particularly for those experiencing PMOS (previously known as PCOS), PMDD and other premenstrual mood challenges, and perimenopause.

    • We break down terms like metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance, as well as defining ultra-processed food, and how it’s contributing to menstrual and menopausal health challenges.

    • Disconnecting metabolic health from body shape and size, and the importance of not comparing yourself to others when it comes to reversing insulin resistance and moving towards metabolic health.

  10. 242. Your Womb is a Temple: African Matrilineal Womb Wisdom (Chanana McGarry)

    Show notes

Today we’re continuing our journey into traditional and indigenous womb wisdom, by exploring African earth-based teachings about the womb as a temple. Our guest and guide is Chanana McGarry, who is a Medicine Woman as well as a certified Fertility Awareness & Sexual Health Educator. She’s been exploring how to bridge ancient wisdom and modern science for two decades, helping people to navigate their sexual health with clarity, sovereignty, and reverence for their body’s innate wisdom and power.

Chanana is a direct descendant of South African Mujaji Rain Queens, and her ground-breaking work is also inspired by her paternal lineage of medicine women in Botswana. In our conversation she shares what she has learned from sitting with her elders, tracing her lineage back over hundreds of years to matrilineal communities who understood women’s bodies as holders of magic.

The womb wisdom teachings that have long existed across the globe, transcending culture and location, including the traditional feminine wisdom technology of mothers giving their daughters river stones, when they came of age, so they could track their own fertility.

    We explore:

    • How two unplanned pregnancies initiated Chanana into fertility awareness and connecting to ancestral womb wisdom.
    • Cervical fluid as the secret language of your womb and the importance of learning your own patterns.
    • The womb as a portal - the place where invisible things come into existence; ideas, desires, and visions; the place where we create everything, from babies, to businesses to the lives we dream of.

  13. 239. How to Manage Overwhelm, Intensity and Disconnection in Your Inner Summer (Alexandra & Sjanie)

    Season 17, Episode 239

    Show notes

Although the inner summer of the menstrual cycle has a reputation for being easy-breezy, for some of us, this can be a real hotspot in the cycle month.

So, this episode is for you if the ovulatory cycle phase is intense or overwhelming, or you feel a sense of pressure to show up and ‘get shit done’ inside an already over-full life. It’s also for you if inner summer brings a sense of being all dressed up for the party, with nowhere to go if you have lots of creative, sexual or social energy but you don’t know where to direct it, or if ovulation brings disconnection and grief due to challenges with trying to conceive.

Through our personal stories as well as generous shares from the Red School community, we explore the challenges of inner summer, and how to reframe them as meaningful limits that support us to access the power of the ovulatory phase. We also explore the cyclical self care practice which can support us to claim and show ourselves exactly as we are in inner summer.

    We explore:

    • Sjanie’s ongoing journey with visibility in inner summer
    • What Alexandra has discovered about the libratory power of limits, as a post-menopausal women.
    • How to grow the emotional muscles of allowing more and more of yourself to exist and be seen in the world, as you truely are.

  14. 238. The Spiritual Power of the Womb (Chantal Blake)

    Show notes

The spiritual power of the cycle and the womb is core to Red School’s teachings and offerings, and we’ve explored this topic on the podcast through the lens of many different faith, spiritual, traditional and indigenous traditions including; Maori womb wisdom with Hinewai Waitoa, Andean womb wisdom teachings with Dr Cynthia Ingar, Anishinabe cyclical wisdom with Asha Frost, and ancient African womb and birth technologies with Latham Thomas, as well as a conversation with Meggan Watterson about relevant mystical christian texts.

Today we’re exploring how the Islamic faith reveres the womb, with Holistic Menstrual Health Educator, Womb Steaming Therapist, and author of ‘Peaceful Periods: Holistic Womb Care for Teens’, Chantal Blake.

Chantal recently gave a learning session in Red School’s graduate community, The Hive, and at the start of this session, she asked a question which moved me deeply; “how does your womb impact your spiritual reality and practice?” Many of the community said that no one had ever asked them that before, and perhaps the same is true for you? So, as an extension of Chantal’s beautiful question, this conversation is an invitation to you and participants of all faith and cultural backgrounds to contemplate the wisdom of the womb as sacred.

    We explore:

    • The ancient, worldwide history of womb steaming and how it can support womb and pelvic health.

    • The Arabic word raḥim—meaning womb—shares its root with raḥma, or mercy, and in Islam, the womb is honored not only as a physical center of creation, but as a symbol of divine compassion and relationality and a vessel of divine mystery.

    • How our wombs support us to gestate our creative ideas, and Chantal’s experience of working with her womb to birth her work projects, including her book.

  15. 237. How to Practice Cycle Awareness After Menopause (Alexandra and Sjanie)

    Season 17, Episode 237

    Show notes

The Menstruality podcast is devoted to restoring cyclical intelligence at the heart of our world, and we center our conversation on the menstrual cycle as a teacher, guide and ally in this quest. But what do you do if you encounter this work after you’ve been through menopause and no longer have a menstrual cycle?

We receive many questions from post-menopause women and folks in our community who are curious about how to practice cycle awareness, such as; what cycles should I track now? Should I track with the moon, and how do I do that? And importantly, what do I do with the regret, grief and anger I feel at missing out on menstrual cycle awareness earlier?

So, in today’s conversation, we weave stories from some of the post-menopause women in the Red School community with Alexandra’s personal experience from many years of tracking with the lunar cycle to share practical guidance and inspiration for how you can bring cyclical wisdom into your life in your third act.

    We explore:

    • What to do when you feel grief and / or rage about not having had access to the wisdom and power of the menstrual cycle during your menstruating years.

    • How to work with the lunar cycle phases to recover menstrual cycle wisdom and embody it, and especially how the new moon can give you permission to rest when you no longer bleed.

    • The ‘quiet medicine’ of post-menopause cycle awareness, and how it can support your healing processes and repair work, particularly trauma healing.

  16. 236. The Power of Cycle Aware Psychotherapy and Mental Health Care (Mary-Claire Decker)

    Season 17, Episode 236

    Show notes

Today we’re exploring how to bring cycle awareness to psychotherapy and mental healthcare.

Our guest is MaryClaire Decker (known as MC) who is a Registered Psychologist. MC created Mindful Cycles after seeing a gap in mental health care, and after her own struggles with chronic menstrual migraines reinforced the need for an approach that works with our cycles, not against them.

At Mindful Cycles, she combines evidence-based therapy with an understanding of cyclical health to help women and people with menstrual cycles navigate their mental well-being with greater self-awareness and resilience.

We talk about how menstrual health symptoms change across the cycle, the neurological and hormonal shifts that cause mental health symptoms to worsen in the second half of the cycle, how to adapt therapeutic approaches based on the phases of the menstrual cycle, and the incredible impact of cycle-informed trauma therapy.

    We explore:

    • Three reasons why mental health care hasn’t been cycle-informed so far; menstrual stigma, the patriarchal, colonial historical context of psychotherapy and the huge gap in research when it comes to women and people with menstrual cycles.
    • Why we risk pathologising people’s experiences, or even misdiagnosing them when we don’t take the fluctuations of the menstrual cycle into account, for example; 25% of people who eventually get diagnosed with PMDD are misdiagnosed with bi-polar disorder first.
    • The beneficial impact of cycle-informed therapy for anxiety, depression, PTSD and trauma, addictions and other mental health challenges.

  17. 235. How to Support Your Child Through Puberty, First Periods and Beyond (Amy Wilding)

    Season 17, Episode 235

    Show notes

1 in 2 girls in the U.S. say they feel embarrassed or ashamed about their period and only 22% of U.S parents feel “very comfortable” talking to their kids about puberty. We need to rewrite this script, and our guest today, menstrual educator Amy Wilding, has written a book to do just that.

Amy has supported hundreds of families through her Period of Change programs, helping them reclaim menarche as a sacred and empowered transition. She’s also a queer and inclusive author, and today we’re chatting about her latest book, Period Of Change: Welcoming Your Daughter’s Period with Care and Confidence.

As Amy says, this is not just a practical guide to puberty and periods. It is a call to reclaim what is our birthright: an understanding of our bodies and the framework for seeing the power and wisdom of our cyclical nature.

Our chat today is full of practical guidance and tips to support the teens and tweens in your life through their menarche and beyond - my favourite were the conversation starters, especially when Amy shared the most important thing to say (and not say) to your child when they get their period for the first time.

    We explore:

    • How to throw a Red Party for your child, and all kinds of ideas for how to celebrate together in big and small ways.
    • The importance of how we speak about our bodies in front of our kids, and affirmations to help your daughter move through generations of cultural shame, silence and discomfort, and model how to honour our bodies and cycles.
    • Amy’s journey supporting her trans kid and guidance for how to show up as a supportive parent and maintain a connection of trust with trans kids when they’re starting their periods.

  18. 234. REPLAY: The Connection between Your Menstrual Cycle and Your Mental & Emotional Health (Alexandra & Sjanie)

    Season 17, Episode 234

    Show notes

Today we’re sharing a replay of one of our most listened to podcasts ever - and it’s all about how getting to know your cycle can be a vital foundation for mental and emotional health.

Alexandra and Sjanie, the co-founders of Red School are both retired therapists, and today they share their learnings from their own personal cycle awareness practice (as well as working with thousands of students over several decades) about how mental and emotional health rests on us knowing ourselves, feeling our value and worth, and understanding the nature of cyclicity. All of which are skills we learn from connecting to our cycles.

We also explore how the root of much of our collective menstrual and emotional turmoil as women and people who have, or have had cycles is the cultural denial, shutting down, ignoring, belittling, and suppression of our cyclical nature.

    We explore:

    • Alexandra’s personal journey with dissolving the shame of her early years and claiming her worth through cycle awareness and menopause, so that now she is emotionally resilient to the extent that she is immune to toxic shame.

    • The two stable poles of the menstrual cycle, and the two transitional phases and how to work with them all to understand ourselves better and create emotional and psychological wellbeing.

    • How following the call to stop and rest at menstruation is medicinal for us emotionally and psychologically.

  19. 233. How Menstrual Cycle Awareness has Shaped my Creative Process (Chloé Zhao)

    Season 17, Episode 233

    Show notes

Today it’s our great pleasure to be joined by Chloé Zhao. Chloé is an academy award winning filmmaker, and amongst many accolades, Chloé is the first Woman of Colour to have won an academy award for best director for her film Nomadland.

In this conversation, Chloé chats with Alexandra and Sjanie about how menstrual cycle awareness has shaped her creative process, including how she worked with the wisdom of her menstrual cycle to create and direct her most recent film, Hamnet, which received eight Oscar nominations.

When Chloé turned thirty seven years old, she started to get menstrual cramps for the first time. Although it wasn’t comfortable, she felt something important was coming to life within her. This coincided with what she lovingly calls a ‘midlife crisis’ that ultimately led her to discover the practice of menstrual cycle awareness, which she says helped her to learn a language that her body had forgotten to speak.

    We explore:

    • Intuition as our greatest currency, and how becoming more aware of our menstrual cycles prepares the body to be a vessel to receive deep intuitive knowing.
    • The cyclical advice that Chloe has for all young filmmakers about the importance of wintering, and the power of seemingly non-productive work of rest, tending to your inner soil, and composting (even in the middle of a film set!).
    • How the premenstrual and menstrual phases of the cycle have taught Chloe to embody creative death and rebirth, and how this played out in the creation of Hamnet.

  20. 232. How Menstrual Cycle Awareness Can Support You in Perimenopause (Alexandra and Sjanie)

    Season 17, Episode 232

    Show notes

As we enter our early forties, we step into a new life phase with a very different atmosphere and tone. We’re shifting into a new paradigm, often accompanied by changes in our menstrual cycles and ourselves, some of which may be startling or very tricky to manage.

Brain fog, memory issues, irregular cycles, heavy periods - the list goes on. You might notice that you have less tolerance for stress, tire more easily, and that your trusty sleep pattern isn’t quite so trusty anymore.

Today I’m chatting with Alexandra and Sjanie about how the practice of menstrual cycle awareness can be a vital source of support as we navigate these challenging years.

Sjanie shares generously about her own experience of perimenopause, or as she calls it, the autumn of the menstruating years; from experiencing new levels of love, to reckoning with childhood trauma, and how her recommitment to the fundamentals of cycle awareness has supported her.

Whether you’re experiencing the psycho‐spiritual shift in the years running up to menopause, or you’re supporting women and folks in the thick of it - perhaps your clients, family members. friends or colleagues - we hope this conversation helps to plug you into the practice of menstrual cycle awareness as a vital perimenopause resource.

    We explore:

    • How to practice menstrual cycle awareness when your cycle is very irregular and how to claim your rest, even when you don’t know when your next period is coming.
    • What is at work on the psycho-spiritual level in the forties, and how the lens of the ‘quickening’ can help to make sense of the challenges of these years.
    • How Sjanie has navigated her trauma healing process in perimenopause, and the importance of community support in this life phase.
