STOP WAITING FOR MOTIVATION! Your Health Can't Wait | Mindset Monday #16

Brother, nobody cares if you feel motivated today. Your health is too important to keep waiting until you feel ready.

It's November. Another year is almost over. And if you're still making the same promises about your health that you made back in January, it's time for a serious conversation.

In this hard-hitting episode of Mindset Monday, Funk Roberts challenges men over 40, 50 and 60 to stop depending on motivation and start building the standards, habits and discipline that create lasting change.

At 57, Funk knows what it's like to deal with chronic back problems, medical procedures, family responsibilities and the daily pressures of life. He doesn't always feel motivated to train or take care of himself.

But he's learned something powerful: Your health cannot depend on your mood.

    What You'll Learn

    • Why motivation is unreliable and why waiting to feel ready keeps men stuck.
    • How to stop making the same health promises year after year.
    • The difference between motivation, habits, discipline and personal standards.
    • Why constantly breaking promises to yourself destroys self-trust.
    • How to stop negotiating with yourself when things get uncomfortable.
    • Why your long-term health matters more than temporary feelings.
    • How to build a realistic health plan that works even when life gets difficult.
    • The three non-negotiable health standards every man should establish.
    • Why recovery, sleep and following medical guidance are part of discipline—not signs of weakness.
    • How to create minimum standards that keep you moving forward without demanding perfection.

Your Alpha Action: Three Non-Negotiable Health Standards

    1. MOVE YOUR BODY. Establish a realistic training or movement schedule that matches your health and abilities.

    2. TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR NUTRITION. Prioritize nutrient-dense foods, adequate protein and consistent meal planning.

    3. PROTECT YOUR RECOVERY. Prioritize sleep, manage stress and follow appropriate medical guidance.

Then establish a minimum standard for difficult days so your commitment doesn't disappear when life gets complicated.

    Funk Wisdom

"Motivation might get you started, but your values, your standards, your habits and discipline are what's going to keep you going."

Stop waiting. Stop negotiating. Stop starting over.

    Season 1, Episode 215

    Show notes

What if ONE decision could completely transform the second half of your life?

At his heaviest, Josh Hewlett weighed 483 POUNDS. A former strongman competitor, Josh suffered a devastating back injury, battled depression, and found himself trapped in a cycle of overeating and inactivity.

Then came a series of moments that changed everything, including an unforgettable experience at Disneyland that forced him to confront the direction his life was heading.

His solution wasn't a miracle diet or a 30-day transformation challenge.

    He started WALKING.

What began with putting on his shoes at 3:12 in the morning turned into a commitment to walk at least 12,500 steps every single day. More than 2,000 consecutive days later, Josh has lost as much as 223 pounds, transformed his health, and progressed from walking to training for a marathon.

In this episode of the Over 40 Alpha Podcast, Funk Roberts sits down with Josh Hewlett, Vice President of Cardio Miracle, to discuss his extraordinary transformation, the power of non-negotiable daily habits, and why men over 40, 50, and 60 need to take cardiovascular health seriously.

Funk and Josh also explore nitric oxide, blood flow, healthy aging, and the importance of making your health a priority before problems develop.

    IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL DISCOVER:

    • How Josh went from 483 pounds to a 223-pound weight-loss transformation.
    • The painful experiences that became his turning point.
    • Why his brother's simple challenge changed his life.
    • How 12,500 daily steps became a non-negotiable habit.
    • What it takes to remain consistent for over 2,000 consecutive days.
    • How Josh progressed from walking to running and marathon training.
    • What nitric oxide is and why it matters for blood vessel function.
    • Josh's perspective on Cardio Miracle and cardiovascular wellness.
    • Why the first step toward transformation is often the most important.

  3. Ep 214 - Mindset Monday #15 - Fear of Change: Don't Let Fear Steal Your Future

    Season 1, Episode 214

    Show notes

What if the biggest thing holding you back from a better life isn't your age, your circumstances or your abilities—but FEAR?

Brother, fear can keep a man trapped for years. Fear of failure. Fear of the unknown. Fear of starting over. Fear of leaving behind the life he's become comfortable with.

But what happens when an 83-year-old woman who's just lost her husband of more than 60 years decides to move to a country she's never visited?

In Mindset Monday #15, Funk Roberts shares the incredible story of his mother, Gloria—affectionately known as G-Ro the Gangster.

After the unexpected passing of Funk's father, Gloria sold her family home, gave away nearly everything she owned and prepared to move to Cuenca, Ecuador.

She doesn't speak Spanish. She's never visited the country. And she's choosing to live among the locals rather than in an established expat community.

But she's moving forward anyway, continuing a dream she and her husband had planned together.

At 83 years old, she's teaching her son—and all of us—that courage doesn't have an age limit.

    What You'll Learn

    • Why fear of change can keep men stuck in the same unhealthy or unfulfilling circumstances for decades.
    • How familiarity can make a bad situation feel safer than an unknown future.
    • Why courage isn't the absence of fear, but the willingness to move forward despite it.
    • What Gloria's remarkable decision to relocate to Ecuador teaches us about resilience, grief and new beginnings.
    • Why getting older doesn't mean your best chapters have to be behind you.
    • How to replace the question "What could go wrong?" with "What could go right?"
    • Why courage requires preparation and support—not reckless decisions.
    • Three powerful questions to help you confront the change you've been avoiding.

    Your Alpha Action

Identify ONE change you've been avoiding because of fear.

  4. Peptides for Men Over 40: The Truth About Fat Loss, Muscle, Recovery & the Gray Market with Jay Campbell

    Season 1, Episode 213

    Show notes

Are peptides the next frontier of men's health optimization, or has the industry become a dangerous free-for-all?

If you're a man in your 40s, 50s, 60s, or beyond, you've probably heard about peptides like tirzepatide, retatrutide, BPC-157, TB-500, MOTS-c, and SS-31. But do you really know what they do, which ones have meaningful human research behind them, and what risks you need to understand?

In this episode of the Over 40 Alpha Podcast, Funk Roberts sits down with Jay Campbell, a longtime health optimization advocate, bestselling author, and co-founder of BioLongevity Labs, for a wide-ranging conversation about the rapidly growing peptide industry.

Jay shares how his personal testosterone journey led him into hormone optimization more than 25 years ago and why he's increasingly concerned about questionable suppliers, counterfeit products, and the growing number of inexperienced people selling experimental compounds.

Funk and Jay also dive into GLP-1 medications, the difference between losing weight and improving body composition, and why resistance training, protein, sleep, and appropriate medical care remain essential for men who want to become leaner and stronger.

The conversation explores emerging compounds being researched or marketed for mitochondrial function, injury recovery, muscle growth, and longevity, including where the evidence is still limited.

    What You'll Learn

    • Why Jay believes the peptide market is becoming increasingly risky.
    • The difference between approved GLP-1 treatments and experimental research peptides.
    • Why weight loss without muscle preservation can create new problems.
    • Jay's perspective on GLP-1 microdosing and conventional dosing.
    • What men should understand about testosterone and metabolic health.
    • Why MOTS-c and SS-31 attract attention in mitochondrial research.
    • What is known — and not yet established — about BPC-157 and TB-500.
    • Why Jay is interested in emerging muscle-growth and longevity compounds.
    • The importance of product quality, clinical evidence, and medical oversight.
    • Why no peptide replaces training, nutrition, sleep, and consistent habits.

  5. Build Muscle AND Mobility After 40: The Missing Link to Longevity | Coach Dean Pohlman

    Season 1, Episode 211

    Show notes

Brother, what if the reason you're struggling to build muscle, stay consistent, or train without nagging aches and pains isn't that you're getting older... but that you're missing a critical piece of your fitness?

Strength without mobility can limit you. Mobility without progressive resistance training leaves another important part of your fitness underdeveloped. What if you trained both?

In this special crossover episode of the Over 40 Alpha Podcast and The Better Man Podcast, I join forces with Coach Dean Pohlman, founder of Man Flow Yoga, to reveal why combining strength training with yoga-based mobility could be one of the smartest approaches to fitness for men in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond.

Dean has spent years helping men improve their flexibility, core strength, movement, and physical confidence. I've dedicated my career to helping men over 40 build muscle, burn fat, and transform their bodies through metabolic resistance training.

Now we've combined our expertise to create MAN FLOW MUSCLE, a follow-along program that brings both training methods together.

    In this episode, you'll discover:

    • Why men who lift weights often neglect the mobility work they need.
    • How strength, flexibility, balance, and core stability work together.
    • Why conventional yoga classes can feel intimidating or unsuitable for many men.
    • The difference between passive stretching and active mobility.
    • How to combine weightlifting and yoga without overwhelming your recovery.
    • Why I use 24-minute total-body metabolic resistance workouts.
    • How Dean designs mobility sessions to complement specific strength workouts.
    • Why your first few weeks should focus on technique, confidence, and consistency.
    • How Man Flow Muscle combines three strength days, three mobility days, and one recovery day.
    • Why the ultimate goal isn't just looking better, but moving well and staying active for life.

We also share our personal experiences, our coaching philosophies, and why we believe that getting stronger and moving better should go hand in hand.

    Introducing MAN FLOW MUSCLE

Our new program combines 24-minute follow-along dumbbell workouts with approximately 30-minute Man Flow Yoga mobility sessions, organized into a structured four-week training plan you can repeat.

Whether you're already lifting weights or you're coming from a yoga background, this program is designed to help you develop a more complete approach to fitness.

How much longer are you going to put your health on hold?

Brother, it's October. Another year is almost over. And if you're still making the same promises about your health that you made back in January, it's time for a serious conversation.

In this powerful episode of Mindset Monday, Funk Roberts delivers a wake-up call to men over 40, 50, 60 and beyond.

This isn't about getting six-pack abs or looking good with your shirt off. It's about your future, your family, your independence and your ability to enjoy the second half of your life.

From battling a serious lung illness to dealing with ongoing back problems and medical procedures, he's learned that the ability to move, breathe comfortably, train and live without constant pain should never be taken for granted.

  7. Ep 210: Stop Relying on Motivation: The Health Standards Every Man Over 40 Needs | Zac Armstrong

    Season 1, Episode 210

    Show notes

    enormous professional pressure...

...yet struggle to consistently exercise, eat well and take care of his own health?

Zac Armstrong believes the answer isn't more motivation.

It's building the habits, standards and systems that make taking care of yourself part of your normal life.

In this episode of the Over 40 Alpha Podcast, Funk sits down with Zac Armstrong — former enlisted Marine, Naval Officer, F-18 fighter pilot, Naval Commander and founder of Executive Health Edge.

They break down why high-performing men often sacrifice their physical, emotional and personal health while pursuing professional achievement — and what it takes to reverse course.

Zac explains why he wants exercise to become as automatic as drinking your morning coffee: you don't wake up and negotiate with yourself. You already know what you're doing. You'll also hear how Zac uses comprehensive bloodwork, wearables and coaching to help clients identify patterns instead of guessing. He describes using an approximately 80-marker blood panel alongside wearable information including sleep, HRV, resting heart rate, VO2 max, movement and recovery. zac-funk

Funk and Zac also get into training after 40, sleep, post-meal walking, testosterone, nutrition, accountability, metabolic health, intent, purpose and why simplifying your health plan may be more effective than constantly searching for the next biohack.

But perhaps the most important part of the conversation is what happens beyond the numbers.

Zac says clients often talk less about pounds lost and more about having greater energy, confidence, work efficiency and presence with their families.

The message for every man over 40 is simple:

You don't need to see the entire staircase.

    Take the first step.

Zac Armstrong, Founder, Executive Health Edge

Zac Armstrong is the founder of Executive Health Edge, a physician-supervised health optimization program for high-performing men aged 40 to 65. A retired Naval Commander, he served 27 years as an enlisted Marine, a Naval Officer, and an F-18 fighter pilot. • How to make exercise as automatic as your morning coffee
    • Why you don't need to see the entire staircase — you just need to take the first step

    • Why Zac recommends a short walk after eating
    • Why your environment and routines can trap you in unhealthy “loops”
    • How intent and purpose change the way you approach your health
    • Why sleep consistency matters — not simply total hours in bed
    • How wearables can help reveal patterns in sleep, recovery and activity
    • Why Zac starts clients with comprehensive blood testing rather than guessing
    • The difference between being told your numbers are “normal” and understanding what those numbers actually mean
    • How Zac combines bloodwork, wearables, nutrition, training and coaching
    • Why removing friction and ambiguity makes consistency easier
    • Why men over 40 may need to train smarter rather than simply heavier
    • How tempo and intentional movement can change the training stimulus
    • Why accountability can be the missing ingredient for successful men
    • The biomarkers and performance measures Zac focuses on with his clients
    • Why the biggest transformation may have nothing to do with the scale
    • How improved health can affect energy, confidence, work and being present with your family
    • And why Zac believes you don't need him, Funk, or anyone else to take your first step

Zac's closing message sums up the entire episode:

You don't need to see the entire staircase. Take the first step.

He argues that believing you can change and then acting on it can begin changing your trajectory regardless of where you're starting.

  8. Mindset Monday 13 -Live Life on Life’s Terms: Why I Give Everything 90 Days

    Season 1, Episode 209

    Show notes

Why I Give Everything 90 Days — And Why You Should Too

What happens to your standards when life stops cooperating with your plans?

As Funk records this week's Mindset Monday, he's getting ready to head out for another procedure on his back.

It wasn't part of the plan.

    But that's exactly the point.

    Life happened.

Your back acts up. Work gets crazy. You travel. You don't sleep well. A family responsibility appears. You get injured. You get sick. Motivation disappears.

If your health and habits only work when life is perfect, they're eventually going to fail.

In this episode, Funk explains why he gives workouts, nutrition plans, habits and major lifestyle changes 90 days—not because there's anything magical about 90 days, but because 90 days gives life enough time to happen. edit-mindset-monday-13-life-on-…

You'll learn why consistency doesn't mean executing the same perfect plan every day. It means continuing in the same direction while adapting to what life puts in front of you.

    What You'll Learn

    - Why waiting for life to “settle down” is a losing strategy

    - How Funk is adapting his own health standards around his current back procedure

    - Why the plan can change without the standard disappearing

    - Why Funk gives workouts, nutrition and new habits 90 days

    - The difference between what 30, 60 and 90 days can teach you

    - Why consistency and perfection are NOT the same thing

    - How to create an Ideal Standard and a Minimum Standard

    - Why your minimum standard protects you from turning something into nothing

    - How to adapt when travel, injuries, restaurants, stress or poor sleep interfere

    - Why men over 40 need a lifestyle capable of surviving real life

    - Funk's 90-Day Life Test

    - The one question to ask when life interrupts your plan: “How do I adapt and keep moving forward?”

    The 30-60-90 Principle

30 days can show you what you CAN do.

60 days can show you what you're BECOMING.

90 days shows you whether you can LIVE it. edit-mindset-monday-13-life-on-…

    Your Alpha Action

Choose ONE thing you're willing to commit to for the next 90 days.

    Then write:

    My Ideal Standard: __________

My Minimum Standard When Life Happens: __________

Don't try to create 90 perfect days.

Create standards capable of surviving 90 real days. edit-mindset-monday-13-life-on-…

    Funk Wisdom

“Don't build a plan that requires the perfect life. Build standards that can survive the real one.”

  9. Episode 208 — GLP-1s, Muscle Loss & Longevity: What Men Over 40 Need to Know | Dr. Q

    Season 1, Episode 208

    Show notes

Are GLP-1 medications just another weight-loss trend — or are they changing the way we think about obesity and metabolic health?

And if you're using one, are you putting your muscle at risk?

In this episode of the Over 40 Alpha Podcast, I sit down with board-certified internal medicine physician Dr. Furhan Qureshi — Dr. Q — for a wide-ranging conversation about GLP-1s, metabolic health, testosterone, muscle, modern medicine, longevity and why so many men feel like they're fighting an uphill battle after 40.

Dr. Q works on both ends of medicine: treating critically ill patients in the hospital while also focusing on prevention and optimization in his wellness practice. Early in our conversation, he explains why he believes medicine has become very good at treating disease but still has major gaps when it comes to preventing it.

And that's where this conversation gets interesting.

We talk about why our modern lifestyle has made movement optional, why sitting, driving and screen time matter, why more men are looking for quick fixes for low energy and low testosterone, and why medication should never replace addressing the underlying problem.

Then we go deep into GLP-1 medications.

Dr. Q explains how they work, why his own opinion of them changed, the benefits he believes the evidence is beginning to reveal, and the potential risks and side effects that shouldn't be ignored.

We also tackle one of the biggest questions for men over 40:

    Do GLP-1s cause muscle loss?

Dr. Q explains that GLP-1s don't simply "attack" muscle; rather, inadequate food and protein intake combined with a lack of resistance training may contribute to loss of lean mass during significant weight loss.

That's especially important after 40 because muscle isn't just about looking good.

    Muscle is metabolic currency.

And as Dr. Q puts it during our conversation:

If you don't use it, you lose it.

🔥 In This Episode You'll Discover:

    • Why Dr. Q moved from critical-care medicine toward prevention and longevity
    • Why "you're just getting older" isn't always a good enough answer
    • The problem with chasing testosterone, energy and quick fixes without finding the underlying cause
    • Why sleep apnea can sometimes masquerade as low energy or symptoms men attribute to low testosterone
    • How modern work, driving and sedentary lifestyles are affecting metabolic health
    • Why movement outside the gym matters
    • What GLP-1 medications actually do
    • Why Dr. Q says he went from a GLP-1 skeptic to supporting their appropriate use
    • What GLP-1s may mean beyond weight loss
    • The risks and potential complications that need to be part of the conversation
    • Whether GLP-1s actually cause muscle loss
    • Why protein + resistance training become even more important during weight loss
    • Why losing weight without building muscle isn't the end goal
    • Why men over 40 need specific training guidance — not simply "exercise more"
    • The danger of DIY medicine and chasing health advice online
    • Why community may be one of the most overlooked pieces of men's health
    • How simple walking can become one of the most powerful habits you build
    • Why getting older does NOT mean becoming weak, sedentary and incapable

    Season 1, Episode 207

    Show notes

Strong Men Know When to Reach Out

What if one of the strongest things a man can do is admit that the load is getting heavy?

In this Mindset Monday, Funk challenges an idea many men have carried for decades: that being strong means handling everything yourself.

Men are taught to provide, protect, solve problems, stay strong and keep moving. Funk believes deeply in responsibility, resilience and becoming a man your family can depend on.

But responsibility does not mean isolation.

In this episode, Funk discusses research showing high levels of stress and risk of social isolation among men, along with how frequently men choose to manage their struggles privately because they don't want to burden the people around them. mindset-monday-12

Funk also gets personal about his own life. After unexpectedly losing his father and helping his mother through the transition that followed, he explains why he plans to seek professional support himself.

Because sometimes strength isn't carrying more.

Sometimes strength is telling someone the load is getting heavy. mindset-monday-12

    • Why men often confuse strength with silence
    • The difference between personal responsibility and trying to do everything alone
    • Why you can be surrounded by family, friends and coworkers and still feel isolated
    • Why asking for support doesn't mean giving away responsibility for your life
    • The importance of Brotherhood and meaningful connection after 40
    • Why someone doesn't always need you to fix their problem—sometimes they need you to listen
    • How asking for help can actually be your next best action
    • Why reaching out works both ways: sometimes you need help, and sometimes another man needs you

  11. Episode 206: Insulin Resistance After 40 — 7 Habits to Improve Insulin Sensitivity & Build Metabolic Muscle

    Season 1, Episode 206

    Show notes

If you’re a man over 40 and your waist keeps getting bigger, your energy feels unpredictable, or losing fat seems harder than it used to be, you’ve probably heard someone blame insulin.

Maybe you’ve been told carbs are the problem.

Maybe you’ve been told that every insulin spike instantly shuts down fat burning.

Maybe you’ve been told to eliminate fruit, rice and potatoes, fast longer, or start obsessively tracking your blood sugar.

In Episode 205 of the Over 40 Alpha Podcast, Funk Roberts breaks down why insulin itself is not the enemy.

The bigger issue is how effectively your body responds to insulin — what we call insulin sensitivity versus insulin resistance.

And one of the most powerful tools men over 40 have for supporting metabolic health?

    Muscle.

Not just muscle for looking good in a T-shirt.

Funk explains why skeletal muscle plays an important role in glucose uptake, fuel storage, movement, strength and long-term independence — and why building what he calls Metabolic Muscle should become a major priority after 40.

    In This Episode, You’ll Learn:

    • What insulin actually does inside your body
    • The difference between insulin sensitivity and insulin resistance
    • Why insulin should not automatically be viewed as a “fat-storage hormone”
    • Why carbohydrates do not automatically make you fat
    • Why skeletal muscle is so important for glucose metabolism
    • The connection between abdominal fat, visceral fat and metabolic health
    • Why walking after meals can be such a powerful habit
    • Why sitting all day can work against your health even if you train
    • How Funk structures his Meta Test Boost Balance Plate
    • Why protein, quality complex carbs, healthy fats, vegetables and fruits all matter
    • Why men over 40 should prioritize resistance training
    • Why sleep and chronic stress can affect insulin sensitivity
    • The 7 biggest mistakes men make when trying to improve metabolic health

  12. Ep 205: Mindset Monday #11 — How Strong Men Reset

    Season 1, Episode 205

    Show notes

You Can't Always Control What Happens, But You Can Control the Reset

    Every man gets off track.

Sometimes it's a missed workout, bad nutrition, a rough weekend or a stressful week.

But sometimes you don't just get off track—you lose yourself for a while.

In this deeply personal Mindset Monday, Funk Roberts shares a period of his life when partying and drugs began taking priority over his health, training and the man he knew he was capable of becoming.

Despite being a professional athlete who understood discipline and hard work, Funk found himself living completely out of alignment with the man he wanted to be. It didn't happen overnight. He drifted one decision at a time until things he never would have accepted before became normal—and it nearly cost him his life.

The decision to reset ultimately helped change the direction of his life.

But your life doesn't have to reach rock bottom before you make your own reset.

Maybe you've drifted with your health, training, nutrition, drinking, marriage, business, mindset or purpose.

You may not be able to rebuild everything with one decision.

But you can CHANGE DIRECTION with one decision.

In this episode, Funk shares his practical 24-Hour Reset and three questions you can use whenever you recognize you've fallen below your standards:

    What happened?

What's within my control right now?

    What's my next best action?

Because one bad meal doesn't need to become a bad weekend.

One missed workout doesn't need to become seven.

And one bad chapter doesn't have to become the rest of your story.

    In This Episode You'll Learn:

    • Why even disciplined men get off track
    • How Funk lost his way and nearly lost his life
    • How destructive behaviors can slowly become “normal”
    • Why drifting happens one decision at a time
    • Why you don't have to wait for Monday to start again
    • How to destroy the all-or-nothing mindset
    • The power of asking, “What's my next best decision?”
    • Funk's 24-Hour Reset
    • Why recognizing, owning and resetting beats shame
    • How one decision can change the direction of your life

  13. Ep 204: The Dirty 13 — 13 Foods Men Over 40 Should Stop Eating

    Season 1, Episode 204

    Show notes

If you’re a man in your 40s, 50s, 60s or beyond and you’re trying to lose belly fat, build muscle, support healthy testosterone, improve metabolic health and stay strong for life, what you STOP eating can matter just as much as what you start eating.

In this episode of the Over 40 Alpha Podcast, Funk Roberts breaks down what he calls The Dirty 13™ — 13 categories of foods he recommends men over 40 remove or dramatically reduce as they build a healthier nutrition lifestyle.

This isn’t about pretending one donut or one bad meal suddenly destroys your testosterone. The bigger issue is the metabolic environment your diet creates over time.

A diet dominated by excess calories and highly processed foods can contribute to increased visceral fat, poorer insulin sensitivity, inflammation and worse metabolic health — all factors that can work against your body-composition, health and hormone goals.

Funk also explains why knowing what to eat isn't enough.

In Episode 202, we talked about one of the biggest problems men face with nutrition: consistency. You can know exactly what you should eat, but can you stick with it when you're busy, stressed, travelling, eating at restaurants, attending social events or surrounded by foods that don't support your goals?

That's why Funk created his Meta Test Boost Nutrition Lifestyle and the GREEN LIST of proteins, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, vegetables, fruits and nutrient-dense whole foods that form the foundation of his Nutrition for Men Over 40 system.

  14. Ep 203: Mindset Monday 10 - Raise Your Standards, Not Just Your Goals | Mindset for Men Over 40

    Season 1, Episode 203

    Show notes

    You have goals.

    You want to lose weight.

    Build muscle.

    Improve your health.

    Strengthen your marriage.

    Grow your business.

    Become a better man.

But here's the question most men never ask:

What are you actually willing to accept from yourself every day?

Because there's a massive difference between having goals and having standards.

You can have a goal to lose 20 pounds, but if your standard allows you to eat like crap five nights a week, skip workouts whenever you're tired and drink every weekend...

Your goal doesn't mean very much.

You can say your health is your number-one priority, but if you're ignoring your sleep, putting off your bloodwork, avoiding mobility and refusing to change the habits you know are hurting you...

Your actions are telling a different story.

In Mindset Monday #10 of the Over 40 Alpha Podcast, I'm breaking down one of the most important mindset shifts a man can make in the second half of his life:

Your goals describe the life you want. Your standards describe the life you're actually willing to live.

    Goals give you direction.

But your standards determine how you live every day.

In this episode, you'll discover why:

    🔥 Goals alone aren't enough

🔥 Standards reduce the daily negotiation in your head

🔥 What you've normalized may be holding you back

🔥 Your standards eventually become part of your identity

🔥 Keeping promises to yourself helps raise your standards

🔥 Standards aren't about perfection — they're about what you return to

🔥 The standards you live by today are building the man you'll become tomorrow

This becomes even more important for men in their 40s, 50s and 60s.

The standards you have for your health today influence the body you'll be living in later.

Your standards for your marriage influence the relationship you're building.

Your standards for your finances influence your freedom.

Your standards for your time influence whether your purpose ever becomes reality.

And your standards for your character determine the man other people experience when they're around you.

A standard isn't perfection. It's what you return to — and how quickly you return to it.

    Don't just raise your goals.

Raise what you expect from yourself.

Your second half deserves a stronger version of you.

    Podcast Summary

You know protein matters. You know vegetables belong on your plate. You know living on takeout and snacks isn’t helping you reach your goals. So why is staying consistent with nutrition still so difficult?

In Episode 202 of the Over 40 Alpha Podcast, Funk Roberts breaks down the Nutrition Consistency Gap—the distance between what you intend to eat and what you actually eat when life gets busy, stressful and unpredictable.

Funk shares his seven-part Meta Test Boost Consistency System: Simplify, Plan, Prep, Build, Prepare, Navigate and Automate. You’ll learn how to create Go-To Meals, plan around your toughest days, prepare flexible meal components and keep emergency backup foods ready before you need them.

He also explains the four-part Meta Test Boost Meal Formula—BUILD with protein, FUEL with quality carbohydrates, SUPPORT with healthy fats and PROTECT with vegetables and fruits—and how he organizes it around three main meals a day.

Drawing on his experience maintaining his nutrition while living with his mother after his father’s passing, Funk shows why a practical system needs to work through real-life disruption.

From restaurants and travel to cravings and getting back on track, this episode is about making healthy eating more repeatable—and ending the “I’ll start again Monday” cycle.

    Key Takeaways

    • Knowing what to eat and following through are different skills. Identify where your nutrition breaks down under the pressures of everyday life.
    • Start with an honest audit, not self-criticism. Review the previous week and pinpoint the situations, feelings and missing preparation behind your decisions.
    • Use the four-part meal formula. Ask: Where is my protein, quality carbohydrate, healthy fat, and vegetables or fruit?
    • A small, repeatable menu reduces daily decisions. Choose Go-To Foods and several meals you enjoy and can prepare confidently.
    • Plan strongest for your busiest days. Look ahead at meetings, travel and family commitments before deciding what food you’ll need.
    • Meal prep can be flexible. Prepare components to mix and match, or portion complete meals according to your schedule. A small prep session still helps.
    • Keep rescue meals available. Backup proteins, rice, frozen vegetables and other convenient staples help you respond when plans change.
    • One off-plan meal doesn’t have to derail your week. Own what happened, learn from it and return to a structured meal.
    • Track behaviors as well as outcomes. Review planning, preparation and meal consistency alongside energy, hunger, training performance and digestion.
    • Automation develops through repetition. Saved grocery lists, predictable meals and reliable backups make nutrition require less thought over time.

The goal isn’t to spend your life thinking about food. It’s to build a system that makes good nutrition easier to repeat.

  16. Ep 201: Mindset Monday — Keep the Promises You Make to Yourself

    Season 1, Episode 201

    Show notes

Self-Trust Is Built One Promise at a Time

How much do you actually trust yourself?

Not how confident you appear. Not whether your wife, children, friends or business partners trust you.

When you tell yourself you're going to do something, do you believe you'll actually follow through?

In this Mindset Monday episode of the Over 40 Alpha Podcast, Funk Roberts explores one of the most powerful lessons he's learned about confidence, discipline and personal growth:

Your word has to mean something to YOU, too.

Most of the promises that shape our lives aren't made publicly.

    They're made in silence.

"I'm going to work out tomorrow."

"I'm finally going to get my bloodwork done."

"I'm going to start eating better."

"I'm going to work on that business idea."

"I'm going to spend more time with my wife and kids."

Nobody hears these promises. There are no social media posts, accountability announcements or applause.

It's just you and your word.

Funk shares how a lesson he took from years of listening to Jim Rohn became a game changer in his own life: some of the most important promises he ever kept were the silent ones.

Every time he followed through, he accumulated evidence that he could count on himself.

That's what Funk calls your Self-Trust Bank Account.

Every promise you keep is a deposit.

Every repeated promise you break is a withdrawal.

And over time, those deposits don't just change your habits.

    They change your identity.

For men in their 40s, 50s and 60s, this becomes even more important. Your health can't live on promises. Your marriage can't live on promises. Your business can't live on promises. And your future can't live on promises.

    They require action.

The solution isn't making bigger promises.

It's making fewer promises—and keeping them.

Promise less. Deliver more. Build evidence. Build self-trust. And eventually become the kind of man who knows:

When I say I'll do something, I do it

    What You'll Learn

    • Why self-trust may be more important than simply trying to “feel confident”
    • Why your word needs to mean something to you
    • The power of promises made and kept in silence
    • How Funk used this principle to transform his own mindset
    • What the Self-Trust Bank Account is
    • How keeping small promises builds confidence
    • How repeatedly breaking promises can create self-doubt
    • Why men over 40 don't need another year of “I'll start Monday”
    • Why making too many promises sets you up to fail
    • The power of “Promise less. Deliver more.”
    • How small actions gradually change your identity
    • Why real discipline is built when nobody is watching
    • How to move from the “I'll try guy” to the “I'll do guy”

  17. EP 200: SPECIAL - I Asked 80+ Health Experts How Men Should Age After 40 - Here’s What I Learned

    Season 1, Episode 200

    Show notes

What does it actually take to age well after 40?

After creating the Men Over 40 Health Summit and interviewing dozens of doctors, strength coaches, hormone specialists, nutrition experts, sleep experts, longevity specialists and some of the biggest names in health and fitness, Funk Roberts began noticing something.

The same themes kept showing up again and again.

In this special 200th episode of The Over 40 Alpha Podcast, Funk breaks down the biggest lessons he took away from the Summit and what they mean for men in their 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond.

This isn't simply about building muscle or increasing testosterone.

Funk explores why men need to build and protect muscle, develop cardiovascular fitness, know their VO₂ max, maintain intelligent intensity, support mitochondrial and metabolic health, get appropriate bloodwork, prioritize protein and nutrition, remain athletic, protect mobility, improve sleep and recovery, and stop expecting supplements to compensate for a poor lifestyle. These themes form the backbone of the episode.

But the biggest lesson is much larger:

You don't optimize one number. You optimize the man.

Your muscle, metabolism, cardiovascular fitness, mitochondria, nutrition, sleep, hormones, mobility, recovery, mindset, relationships and purpose are interconnected.

Funk also explains why the massive amount of information generated by the Summit created a new problem—how does one man actually find, understand and implement all of it?—and how that led to the development of Funk AI / the Second Half Strong AI Coach.

If you're a man over 40 who doesn't simply want to live longer but wants to remain strong, capable, resilient and purposeful, this episode provides a blueprint for becoming Second Half Strong.

    Season 1, Episode 198

    Show notes

    Stoic Lessons for Men Over 40, 50 & 60

    Episode Summary

Some of the most important battles you'll ever fight aren't happening around you.

    They're happening within you.

Between fear and courage. Discipline and comfort. Acceptance and resistance. Seeking approval and trusting yourself. And ultimately, between the man you've been and the man you're trying to become.

In this Mindset Academy Monday episode of the Over 40 Alpha Podcast, Funk Roberts explores nine internal battles every man must learn to face, using lessons inspired by the Stoic philosophers Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus and Seneca.

Stoicism isn't about becoming emotionless, shutting people out or trying to handle everything alone. Funk explains why strong men still need Brotherhood, family, friends, mentors, coaches, and sometimes professional help. The difference is that while others can stand beside you, there are certain internal battles they cannot win for you.

You'll learn how to deal with failure without allowing it to define you, handle being misunderstood, process loss, make difficult decisions without certainty, confront your own weaknesses, live with uncertainty, and stop handing other people control over your confidence.

And ultimately, you'll discover why the greatest battle is deciding which man you're building through the choices you make every day.

Because after 40, 50 and 60, you have something your younger self didn't have:

    Experience.

You've succeeded. You've failed. You've lost people. You've made mistakes. You've watched plans fall apart. And you've hopefully gained wisdom along the way.

    The question now is:

What are you going to do with that wisdom?

    What You'll Learn

    • Why your greatest battles often happen within you
    • What Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus and Seneca can teach modern men
    • The difference between healthy solitude and isolation
    • Why failure doesn't make you a failure
    • How to stop needing everyone to understand your decisions
    • Why Stoicism does NOT mean suppressing grief or emotion
    • How to make difficult decisions when you don't have certainty
    • Why confronting your own weaknesses is essential for growth
    • The difference between preparing for the future and obsessing over it
    • How seeking approval gives other people control over your confidence
    • Why your everyday choices are constantly building your character
    • The Stoic question that can change how you handle difficult situations: “What is actually within my control?
