  1. The RunOut #175: The new classic climbs, according to Steph Abegg

    Show notes

Steph Abegg is a climber, mathematician, and now full-time van-lifer who has been meticulously recording trip reports for the past 20 years. She’s working on a new book called Seventy Select, featuring seventy of her favorite multipitch rock climbs from across western North America.

But first, your hosts meet up to debrief about climbing hell.

And our final bit delivers the poetry of Victor McConnell.

  2. The RunOut BONUS: Slovak Direct with Will Hodgson and Vincent Landry

    Show notes

Earlier this year, Will Hodgson and Vincent Landry repeated the Slovak Direct (AI6 M8, 2,700m) on Denali — 38 hours on route, every pitch freed on what Vincent calls some of the best granite he’s ever touched.

We talk about the climb itself, and about Balin Miller, the last person to climb the route before them, whose memory shadowed every pitch of their ascent. We also get into what draws them to alpine climbing in the first place: the belief that above everything else, it should be fun.

This special bonus episode first appeared on our Patreon feed. We’re releasing it to share this important conversation with our wider audience. If you enjoy this episode, please consider supporting our show by joining us on Patreon. https://www.patreon.com/runoutpodcast

  3. The RunOut #174: In the writer’s room with Astra Lincoln

    Show notes

Astra Lincoln is a writer, creative researcher, and self-described futurist working at the intersection of people, power, and place. She’s won Banff’s best article award twice and been a finalist for the Yale Nonfiction Book Prize, and before all that she worked as a pastry chef, a wilderness trail mason, and a glacial ecologist. Her first novel is on the way. And her latest article is a profile of the legendary Michael Kennedy, which is printed in the latest issue of Summit Journal, #325.

But first, the show hosts catch up on some 20 year old beef that no one can remember, and then dive into the latest autobelay horror story.

Our final bit comes from the incredibly talented Craig Muderlak — an illustrator, painter, musician and award-winning filmmaker, whose work is inspired by a desire to explore a connection to expansive landscapes. Show notes

Andres Marin is a mountain guide, alpinist, and competitive ice climber who’s originally from Columbia, but is a longtime resident of Ouray, Colorado. His passion is expedition climbing, and he’s completed notable first ascents around the world including in Kyrgzstan and Peru. We talk about a wildfire that nearly destroyed his town, affecting the climbing and local communities alike, as well as other catastrophes and disasters around the world. Despite being such a depressing conversation, Andres, with his usual humor and positive disposition, brings hope and light to the frontlines of these issues.

But first, your hosts convene on relationships in life and climbing.

  5. The RunOut #172: Liv Ogier and the joy of suffering for sport climbing

    Show notes

Liv Ogier recently completed the first ascent of Yellow Sun (5.14d), an extension to Tommy Caldwell’s Kryptonite at the Fortress of Solitude. As a former comp climber, her choice to project at one of Colorado’s most remote and challenging sport crags resulted in numerous days and nights of challenging conditions that are more often associated with alpinism than sport climbing. But the result of her efforts landed her among a very small and select group of women who have established first ascents of routes rated 5.14d.

But first, your grumpy hosts grump about climbing.

    Show notes

Cameron King is the climbing program supervisor for Yosemite National Park. Greg Stock is Yosemite’s resident geologist. Both are climbers and they’re here today to talk about various issues within America’s most notable national park.

But first, we tie in for a discussion about the new Ten Sleep-style modern classic, Snake Dike, and what to do about the slippery slope that climbing is on.

Patrick Curry is a longtime Valley climber, longtime listener, and first-time contributor to the Final Bit under his stage name of Motorcycle Butt Face. This submission, crafted using guitars and a computer, is a reference to a comment Andy Salo made on this years TAPS episode of the Enormocast. 13. The RunOut #164: Strong and Soft with Margo Hayes

    Show notes

Margo Hayes is a professional climber, model, musician, and artist — and she's best known as the first woman to climb 5.15a, a grade she reached not just once, but three times: La Rambla, Biographie, and Papichulo. In recent years, a battle with Lyme disease has made climbing at her limit difficult, and she's channeled her energy into art, music, and writing. Her new book, The Margo Method, outlines her approach to climbing and health.

But first, we pore over the details of a very interesting, precedent-setting case involving a manslaughter conviction after a winter mountaineering ascent turns tragic.

    Show notes

Connor Herson is back. He needs no introduction, but he's easily one of, if not the best, trad climber in the world at the moment. We talk about his 2025 climbing season in Yosemite, when he ticked the free Nose in a day, got a first free ascent of Triple Direct, and climbed many other major notable routes all while going to school.

But first, what's next for Alex Honnold? We have some ideas.

Today's final bit is from photographer and musician Cliff Ritchey, with the song "Patagonia." Cliff teamed up with writer Kelsey Timmerman on a book called "Regenerating Earth," by Patagonia Books, that documents regenerative farming practices around the world. Show notes

Mary Eden is known on Instagram as Trad Princess but in real life, she's one of the sport's best offwidth crack climbers. Recently she acheived the first female ascent of Century Crack, perhaps the world's longest and hardest wide roof crack.

  17. The RunOut #160: How Lara Neumeir Climbs with Composure and Control

    Show notes

Lara Neumeier is a German climber known for her composure on demanding, heady terrain. Her notable ascents include a repeat of Psychogramm (5.14a trad), Silbergeier and End of Silence—two of the iconic multipitch alpine routes that form Europe’s so-called Alpine Trilogy—as well as El Corazón and the Pineapple Express on El Capitan.

Before diving into Lara’s climbing and approach to mental strength, we open with a conversation about the benefits—and potential pitfalls—of choosing a climber as your partner for life, both on and off the rock.

This episode’s final bit comes from Dave Pomeranz, a longtime climber balancing life as a dad and guitarist while roaming the American West. His band, Whale Fall, contributes the track “The Dawn Thief,” inspired by long night drives through deserts and mountains on the way to climb.

  18. The RunOut #159: Fallon Rowe Climbs Through Trauma and Into Strength

    Show notes

Fallon Rowe is a climber, writer, coach, teacher, researcher, and many more things. Her new book is called Pay No Mind: A Memoir of Climbing, Abuse, and Survival. Beyond discussing the traumatic story that she tells in her book, we enjoyed listening to Fallon bring her always thoughtful, grounded perspective to the way she approaches movement, risk, and life on the rock.

But first, we sit down to talk about The Art of Suffering. No, not the kind of suffering we normally describe of getting to Rifle and finding nowhere to park. The kind of suffering that only one of alpinism's most enigmatic and thoughtful philosophers could articulate: Voytek Kurtkyka, the legendary Polish climber.

Our final bit comes from climber, listener, and drummer Todd Hammond, and the Utah-based band The Statuettes. This track is called The of End of Everything.

  19. The Runout #158: Laura Pineau and Kate Kellegan Go Big on Triple Crown

    Show notes

On June 8 Kate Kellegan and Laura Pineau (aka Mademoiselle Fissure) became the first women to complete the Yosemite Triple Crown. That means the climbed El Capitan, Half Dome and Mt. Watkins in a day. Their time was 23 hours, 36 minutes, and 40 seconds. In this conversation, Kate and Laura share the tactics they used to achieve their big link-up, including tapping into the stoke and support of the community.

But first, Kalous lays down on the therapy couch while Dr. Bisharat tries to diagnose why redpointing projects isn't bringing him the kind of joy you might otherwise expect.

Last, the Pink Rope Club from Atlanta performs their anthem.

  20. The RunOut #157: Born to climb with kids’ book author Danielle Sarli

    Show notes

Danielle Sarli is a kindergarten teacher, musician, and passionate climber. She is the author of Little Climber, a new kids' book illustrated by Amanda Joy Hogan. We discuss how to tap into that kid-like innate urge to climb, and kindle the joy that we all feel when stand on top of the world—or our own projects.

But first, your inquisitive show hosts take a moment to ask each other anything. Literally, anything.

Last, we'd be remiss not to share some of Danielle's musical chops. Here she is performing Beauty Land.
