Stronger Feet, Better Balance: 4 Exercises for Healthy Aging

Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes — Episode 4: Toes

When was the last time you thought about strengthening your feet?

We spend time working on our arms, legs, and core, but what about the feet and ankles that support us through almost every movement?

If you've noticed yourself holding onto the railing more often, feeling unsteady on uneven ground, or becoming less confident about your balance, this episode is for you.

In the final episode of the Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes series, Alexis Crisp, certified personal trainer and fitness and nutrition coach, explores how foot strength, ankle mobility, and balance training can help women stay active, confident, and independent as they age.

Through the Well Women Flourish pillars of mindset, fitness, and nutrition, Alexis shares practical exercises and simple habits you can begin incorporating into your daily routine.

    In This Episode, You'll Discover

    •

Why foot and ankle strength matters for walking, balance, and everyday mobility.

    •

How aging can affect strength, coordination, and confidence—and what you can work on.

    •

Four simple exercises to strengthen your feet and ankles and challenge your balance.

    •

Why intentional balance training matters, even if you already exercise regularly.

    •

How protein, fiber, added sugar awareness, and hydration support overall health.

    •

How to turn a vague fitness goal into a specific, achievable action.

    •

A faith reflection on Psalm 37:23 and taking intentional steps toward better health.

4 Exercises for Stronger Feet and Better Balance

    1. Toe Raises

Stand near a sturdy support with your heels on the floor. Lift the front of your feet and toes toward your shins, then lower slowly.

    Alexis suggests 10–15 repetitions.

    2. Single-Leg Balance

Stand beside a sturdy counter, shift your weight onto one foot, and gently lift the other.

Begin with about 10 seconds and work toward 20–30 seconds on each side as your balance improves.

    3. Heel-to-Toe Walking

Walk slowly in a straight line, placing the heel of one foot directly in front of the toes of the other.

Try 5–10 controlled steps while using a stable surface for support as needed.

    4. Toe Spreading and Toe Presses

Sit with your feet flat on the floor. Spread your toes apart, relax, then practice gently pressing them into the floor while keeping your heels down.

Try 10 repetitions of each movement.

Safety reminder: Use sturdy support when practicing standing balance exercises. If you've experienced repeated falls, significant dizziness, a recent injury, or a condition affecting your balance, seek guidance from your healthcare professional before beginning.

    Your Flourishing Mindset Shift

Stop saying, “I'm just getting older,” and start asking, “What can I strengthen today?”

You may not control every age-related change, but you can take intentional steps to support your strength, coordination, and mobility.

Nutrition for Strength and Healthy Aging

Alexis revisits her key nutrition priorities:

    •

Protein: Support muscle maintenance, recovery, and repair.

    •

Fiber: Support digestive health and help you feel satisfied.

    •

Added sugar: Read labels and become more aware of sugar in everyday drinks and foods.

    •

Hydration: Drink adequate water according to your individual needs.

    Faith Reflection: Psalm 37:23

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and he delighteth in his way.” — Psalm 37:23 (KJV)

Alexis reminds us that our bodies are wonderfully designed and that caring for our health is one way to practice stewardship over what God has entrusted to us.

    Your Action Step

Choose ONE balance exercise from today's episode.

Do it today, or schedule an exact time to practice it.

    Show notes

5 Shoulder Exercises for Women: Build Strength, Improve Mobility & Age Well

Your shoulders help you do more than you may realize. From reaching overhead and carrying groceries to lifting children and getting dressed, shoulder strength plays an important role in everyday life.

In this episode of the Well Women Flourish Podcast, Alexis Crisp, certified personal trainer, fitness and nutrition coach, explores how women can build stronger shoulders, support healthy aging, and take a more proactive approach to their health through mindset, nutrition, and fitness.

As part of the Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes series, Alexis shares five shoulder exercises you can incorporate into your strength training routine, even if you don't have access to a gym or heavy weights.

But this episode goes beyond exercise. You'll also learn how protein, fiber, and added sugar fit into your nutrition habits, why consistent action matters more than waiting for motivation, and how caring for your body connects to your faith.

    In This Episode, You'll Learn

    •

The importance of shoulder strength: How strong shoulders support everyday activities like lifting, reaching, carrying, and pushing.

    •

Five shoulder exercises for women: Learn the shoulder press, lateral raise, front raise, rear delt fly, and wall slides.

    •

How to train for healthy aging: Shift your mindset from exercising for appearance to building strength for the life you want to keep living.

    •

Nutrition for muscle health: Understand the role of protein in muscle maintenance and recovery, fiber in digestive health and fullness, and awareness of added sugar.

    •

How to build exercise consistency: Use implementation intentions to turn a general fitness goal into a specific, scheduled action.

    •

Faith and physical wellness: Reflect on 1 Corinthians 6:20 and the idea of caring for your body as an act of stewardship.

    Five Shoulder Exercises to Try

    •

Shoulder press — Practice the overhead movement used when reaching for items on a shelf.

    •

Lateral raise — Strengthen the side of your shoulders with controlled arm raises.

    •

Front raise — Train the front of your shoulders by lifting your arms forward.

    •

Rear delt fly — Work the back of your shoulders and support upper-body strength.

    •

Wall slides — Practice shoulder mobility and movement control.

Alexis recommends starting with two or three of these exercises and aiming for two or three sets of approximately 8–12 repetitions, adjusting to your ability and comfortable range of motion. Use controlled movements and choose weights, or no weights, that allow you to maintain good form.

    Your Flourishing Mindset

Train for the life you want to keep living.

Strength training is about more than how your body looks. It can help you build and maintain the strength you need to continue doing the things that matter to you.

Instead of waiting until you feel motivated, choose two or three shoulder exercises and schedule a specific time to do them. Small actions repeated consistently can help you build a stronger relationship with your health and your commitments to yourself.

Nutrition Reminder: Protein, Fiber & Added Sugar

Alexis encourages listeners to become more aware of three important nutrition considerations:

    •

Protein: She suggests approximately 25–30 grams at each meal as a starting point for many people.

    •

Fiber: She discusses approximately 25 grams per day as a general goal for many adults, with vegetables as an important food source.

    •

Added sugar: She highlights the American Heart Association's recommendation that women limit added sugar to about 25 grams per day.

Individual nutrition needs vary. Focus on building sustainable habits and choosing nutrient-dense foods that support your needs.

    Faith Reflection

“Therefore honor God with your bodies.” — 1 Corinthians 6:20

Caring for your physical health can be part of faithful stewardship. Building strength helps you continue showing up for your responsibilities, serving others, and caring for the people you love.

    Your Action Step

Choose two or three shoulder exercises from this episode. Decide exactly when you'll do them today, put that time on your schedule, and follow through.

Then share which exercises you completed and what time you did them.

  10. Proper Exercise Form | Stop Making These Workout Mistakes

    Episode 29

    Show notes

Are you exercising consistently but unknowingly practicing poor exercise form?

Showing up for our workouts matters, but how we move matters too. Repeating an exercise with poor positioning can reinforce movement patterns that work against the strength, posture, and results we're trying to build.

In this episode of Well Women Flourish, certified personal trainer, group fitness instructor, and fitness and nutrition coach Alexis Crisp breaks down why proper exercise form deserves just as much attention as the number of reps or amount of weight we're lifting.

    You'll learn:

    • Why repeating an exercise doesn't automatically mean we're getting better at it
    • What it means to keep our joints “stacked” during exercise
    • Why wrist position matters when holding dumbbells
    • How head, shoulder, spine, hip, knee, and ankle alignment affect movement
    • Why heavier weights don't automatically mean greater progress
    • How to recognize when a weight may be too heavy
    • Why slowing down can improve the quality of our repetitions
    • How a personal trainer can spot movement patterns we can't see ourselves
    • Why good coaching is about more than making you sweat
    • How better body awareness can carry over into everyday movement

    Coaching Cue

Slow down enough to notice your position.

During your next workout, look at your wrists. Notice your shoulders. Pay attention to your head and neck. Ask yourself whether you're controlling the weight or the weight is controlling you.

Sometimes progress means choosing a lighter weight and moving with better control.

    Faith Reflection

    Proverbs 4:26 reminds us:

“Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways.”

We can bring that same intentionality into how we care for and move our bodies. We don't have to rush mindlessly through exercise just to check it off the list. We can learn to move with wisdom, awareness, and good stewardship.

Alexis explains how the brain communicates with your muscles, why unilateral movements improve everyday function, and why we shouldn't avoid exercises that feel difficult.

    In this episode you'll discover:

    • Why movement strengthens your brain

Your Doctor Told You to Exercise | Here's How to Start

Has your doctor ever told you to exercise, but weeks or even months later, nothing has changed?

If you've struggled to start a workout routine or keep falling off track, you're not alone. In this episode of Well Women Flourish, you'll discover why beginner fitness motivation isn't about finding more willpower. It's about removing the barriers that keep you from taking consistent action. You'll learn practical strategies to finally stop starting over and begin building healthy habits that last.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    •

Why knowing you should exercise isn't enough to create change

    •

Three common reasons people struggle to stay consistent with exercise

    •

Why doing too much too soon often leads to burnout

    •

Why motivation fades and what to rely on instead

    •

How your self talk and identity influence your daily habits

    •

Simple steps to create a sustainable fitness routine

    •

How the Move26 Challenge can help you build momentum one day at a time

Many women believe they need more motivation before they can begin exercising. The truth is that action creates motivation, not the other way around. Small, consistent choices help rewire your habits and build confidence over time.

As Christians, we are called to faithfully care for the bodies God has entrusted to us. Stewardship doesn't begin when life becomes less busy. It begins with today's decision to take one small step forward.

Coaching Cue: Ask yourself, "What's the smallest action I can take today?" It might be a five minute walk, a few bodyweight exercises, or simply putting on your walking shoes. Focus on showing up instead of being perfect.

If you're looking for beginner fitness motivation, realistic fitness advice, and practical nutrition strategies for women over 45, this episode will encourage you to stop waiting for the perfect time and start building the healthy lifestyle you deserve.

How to Start Exercising | Why 5 Minutes Changes Everything

Have you ever told yourself you'll start exercising when life slows down?

If you're waiting for the perfect time to begin, this episode is for you. In this episode of Well Women Flourish, you'll discover why beginner fitness motivation doesn't come from feeling inspired. It comes from taking one small step. You'll learn how five minutes of movement can build confidence, create healthy habits, and become the foundation for lasting transformation.

    In this episode you'll learn:

    •

Why waiting for the "right time" keeps you stuck

    •

How all or nothing thinking sabotages your health goals

    •

Why consistency beats perfection every time

    •

The science behind building healthy habits through small wins

    •

How five minutes a day can improve your confidence and momentum

    •

One practical action you can take today to start moving

When we think we need an hour long workout or the perfect routine, we often end up doing nothing. Research on habit formation shows that small, consistent actions are far more effective than occasional bursts of motivation. Every workout, every walk, and every healthy choice is a vote for the person you're becoming.

As followers of Christ, we're also called to care for the bodies God has entrusted to us. Stewardship begins with today's decision, not someday's perfect plan.

Coaching Cue: Choose one five minute activity you can complete today. Go for a walk, stretch, perform a few bodyweight exercises, or simply move. Then repeat it tomorrow. Small actions repeated consistently create lasting change.

If you're looking for beginner fitness motivation, simple wellness habits, and realistic fitness and nutrition strategies for women over 45, you're in the right place. Remember, you don't have to do everything. You just have to take the next step.
