  2. 10 Things I Want Every Beginner To Know About Yoga | Ep. 60

    Episode 60

    Show notes

There are so many things I wish I could go back and tell myself when I was brand new to yoga. And the funny thing is, after all these years of practicing and teaching, they’re still things I come back to now.

So in this episode, I’m sharing ten things I wish every beginner knew about yoga. And really, ten things I wish everybody knew about yoga.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Why you don’t need to know what you’re doing before you start
    • Why a little yoga still counts, and why consistency doesn’t have to mean hour-long practices
    • How to stop treating props and modifications like the “lesser” version of yoga
    • Why your practice doesn’t need to look like your teacher’s, or even like your own practice did yesterday
    • What it might mean to stop trying to become “good at yoga” altogether

Have you ever thought, “I’d really like to try yoga, but I need to get in shape first”?

Maybe you want to get stronger, more flexible, or steadier before you begin. But those aren’t prerequisites for yoga—they’re some of the very things we practice yoga to build.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Why strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination aren’t prerequisites for starting yoga

    • What “meeting your body where it is” actually looks like in a yoga class

    • Why a bad experience with one class doesn’t necessarily mean yoga isn’t for you

    • How modifications, props, chair yoga, or individualized support can help you find an appropriate starting point

    • Why finding the right yoga practice for you matters more than trying to make yourself fit the yoga in front of you

When you feel tight, your first instinct might be to stretch harder, pull a little deeper, or stay there until the muscle finally “lets go.”

But improving flexibility isn’t quite that simple.

In this episode of Yoga for Longevity, we’re exploring the final pillar of the Five Pillars of Movement Longevity: Flexibility & Release. We’ll look at what may actually be changing when regular stretching improves your range of motion, and why I don’t believe you need to push your body to its limits to get more flexible.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • The difference between flexibility and mobility, and why both matter for healthy aging

    • Why feeling “tight” doesn’t necessarily mean a muscle is physically too short

    • What research tells us about stretch tolerance, tissue stiffness, and improvements in range of motion

    • Why I prefer longer, gentler holds rather than continually pulling yourself deeper

    • How breath, body awareness, and release can change the way you experience a stretch

Posture Changes How You Breathe, Move, and Feel

Posture is the pillar most people skip. It's also the one affecting your breathing, your balance, and how much effort it takes to get through an ordinary day.

This is the fourth episode in a five-part series going behind the scenes of the five pillars of movement longevity. Today Mikah makes her case for posture, and then gives you the three jobs behind every posture practice she teaches.

If you've been told to stand up straight your whole life and it has never changed anything, this episode is for you.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • What your posture is doing to your breathing, and how to feel it for yourself in ten seconds
    • Why pulling your shoulders back never holds, and what actually changes the pattern
    • The invisible box your shoulders have been living in for decades
    • Which postural muscles switch off from sitting, and how to wake them back up

Can you actually improve your balance after 60?

More than one in four adults over 65 falls every year, and less than half of them ever tell their doctor. Balance is one of those things you don't realize has changed until something happens.

This is the third episode in a five-part series going behind the scenes of the five pillars of movement longevity. Today it's balance, what it's actually made of, and why Mikah is more confident about improving this one than almost anything else she teaches.

You'll get the three systems your brain reads every second you're upright, the hip muscle doing work you've never thought about, and what a 2026 study found in adults aged 65 to 85 after twelve weeks of practice.

If your balance has gotten shakier in the last few years and you've been filing that under just getting older, this episode is for you.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • Why balance is a skill you can practice, improve, and maintain for your whole life
    • The three systems your body uses to keep you upright, and how each one gets trained
    • The "magical" hip muscle that steadies you on every single step you take
    • What's actually happening in your body the moment you wobble

Can yoga build strength after 50?

If you're over 50 and wondering whether yoga is really enough to keep you strong, this episode is your answer. It's a clear look at how yoga builds real, usable strength for healthy aging: starting with your own body weight, focusing on the muscles that keep you independent, and moving slowly and with control so it's both safe and effective.

If you want to get stronger without lifting heavy or pushing into pain, this one's for you.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • How yoga builds real strength using your own body weight
    • What your "Independence Muscles" are, and why they matter most
    • Why moving slowly builds more strength, and protects you while you learn
    • Why soreness isn't the sign of progress you've been told it is

This is the first episode in a five-part series taking you behind the scenes of the Lifelong Yoga Method, one pillar of movement longevity at a time. If you've been told your stiffness is just arthritis, or you've assumed that movement has to be hard to be worth doing, this episode is for you.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • Why cartilage depends on movement in a way most tissue in your body doesn't
    • The reason your joints feel stiffest first thing in the morning
    • Why gentle, small-range movement is doing more for your joints than intense exercise

    Episode 52

    Show notes

Yoga Snacks: The Science Behind Why Two Minutes Actually Counts

If you’ve ever skipped your practice because you didn’t have a full hour, this episode is for you. A lot of us carry a belief that yoga only counts if it’s a full class on the mat, and if you can’t do that, you may as well do nothing. Mikah takes that belief apart.

Movement science even has a name for the alternative: exercise snacks, short bursts of movement spread across your day. Mikah shares what the research shows and the small practices woven through her own day, and why yoga is less an appointment and more a way of living.

If you’ve been feeling like you’re always behind, or that a short practice isn’t “real” practice, this one’s for you.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Why short, frequent movement often beats one long session, especially after 50
    • What happens to your blood sugar after meals, and the simple movement that steadies it
    • How to anchor tiny practices to things you already do, so they actually stick
    • Why a one-minute breath or meditation is worth more than the practice you keep meaning to get to

  11. Want to Age Well? Start With Your Breath | Ep. 51

    Episode 51

    Show notes

You wake up with a dry mouth. You're up once or twice in the night. Maybe someone has mentioned that you snore. It's easy to chalk all of that up to getting older. But it might come down to something much simpler: whether you breathe through your nose or your mouth.

Most of us treat the nose like a passageway. In this episode of Yoga for Longevity, Mikah Horn makes the case that it's doing far more work than you realize, and that this one simple habit shapes your sleep, your circulation, and how you feel in your body as you age. She looks at what the science actually shows about nasal breathing, from filtering to nitric oxide to better sleep, separates what's solid from what tends to get oversold, and shares what she's been exploring in her own life.

Then she turns to what yoga has understood about the breath for thousands of years. From prana and the body's energy channels, to the real research on right versus left nostril breathing, to the nasal cycle that yogis noticed centuries before science named it, this is where tradition and evidence meet, and where Mikah lets each one stand on its own.

If your sleep, your energy, or your stress could use some support, and you want somewhere simple to start, this episode is for you.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    - Why nose breathing does things your mouth simply cannot, and what nitric oxide has to do with it

    - How mouth breathing may be affecting your sleep, your snoring, and even your nighttime trips to the bathroom

    - One simple breathing shift you can practice during the day and support at night

    - What yoga understood about the breath long before science could measure it

    - What the research on right and left nostril breathing actually found, and where it's still a fascinating lens rather than settled science

    Episode 50

    Show notes

Enroll in Strong Bones, Safe Yoga

More than half of women over fifty will break a bone because of osteoporosis in their lifetime. It's usually silent, no symptoms until something breaks, which means a lot of women are losing bone density right now and have no idea.

If you've recently been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia, you've probably been handed a long list of don'ts. Don't bend, don't twist, be careful. And now you're wondering whether the yoga you love is even safe anymore.

In this episode, Mikah talks openly about who her new course, Strong Bones, Safe Yoga, is for, and who it isn't. She speaks directly to the newly diagnosed and shares what's actually inside: the SPACE method, how she groups every movement of the spine so you can move in every direction safely, five follow-along practices, and a bonus video and printout of Dr. Loren Fishman's twelve yoga poses for osteoporosis, taught her way.

If you've been scared to move since your diagnosis, this episode is for you. You do not have to spend the rest of your life afraid of your own body.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    - Why a baseline bone density scan matters after fifty

    - Why fearing movement is not the answer for your bones

    - What's inside the course, from the SPACE method to the five-day practice plan

The word that's right on the tip of your tongue. Walking into a room and forgetting why you came in. The little "senior moments" that make you wonder what's ahead. If you're over 60 and you've wondered whether there's anything you can actually do to support your brain, this episode is for you.

Years before she had the research to explain it, Mikah Horn was teaching daily yoga in a memory care unit, watching something remarkable happen in that room. In this episode she shares that story and walks through what the science now shows about yoga and brain health, honestly. Not a cure, but real, simple, evidence-backed ways to support your memory, focus, and mental clarity as the years go on.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

  14. 3 Practices to Live with More Intention (That Don't Include Yoga Poses) | Ep. 48

    Episode 48

    Show notes

What if you can't control the middle of your day, but the two moments that frame it, the very start and the very end, are entirely yours?

In this personal episode, Mikah Horn steps off the mat to share 3 small rituals she's been using to live with more intention, and not one of them involves a yoga pose. A morning practice she recorded in her own voice, a simple way to close the day, and a sound experiment she's been enjoying in between.

It's the side of yoga that was never about the poses, and why small, repeatable daily rituals may matter more for healthy aging than any single stretch. There's real research under each one, from the intention-behavior gap to the positive psychology of ending your day well.

If your days tend to start and end on autopilot, and you're ready to feel a little more steady and a little more like yourself, this episode is for you.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    - A simple morning intention practice, and the research on why a clear intention makes you far more likely to follow through

    - The three good things practice for closing your day, and why this one is so well studied

    - How to use sound to settle your mind, with an honest take on what it can and can't do

If you've recently been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia, you've probably wondered which yoga poses you're supposed to avoid. This episode gives you the answer, and then something more useful: ONE simple thing to focus on that keeps your spine safe in almost any movement.

For years, the advice for osteoporosis was strict and a little scary: don't bend, don't twist, don't lift anything heavy, be careful. But the current guidance tells a more hopeful story. In this episode, Mikah Horn walks through which movements genuinely call for care, and how to modify them rather than give them up, drawing on the 2022 UK consensus statement on physical activity and exercise for osteoporosis.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    - Why the old "don't bend, don't twist" advice has shifted, and what the current consensus actually recommends

  16. Why Women Over 60 Are Losing Strength (Sarcopenia, Frailty, and Bone Health) | Ep. 46

    Episode 46

    Show notes

Women over 60 are losing strength without realizing it. There's no pain and no warning, just a day when getting up off the floor takes more than it used to. That gradual muscle loss is called sarcopenia, and in this episode, yoga therapist Mikah Horn explains why it happens, why it speeds up for women after menopause, and why you can build strength at any age, without the gym or heavy weights.

She also unpacks the connection between muscle and bone, a pairing researchers call a "hazardous duet," and how a yoga practice built around mindful strength can rebuild what's slipping away. If you've felt yourself getting weaker, or you've been told you have osteoporosis or osteopenia and you're afraid to move, this episode is for you.

    • Why strength loss and bone loss both speed up for women after menopause
    • The link between losing muscle and losing your protection from falls, fractures, and frailty

  17. The Surprising Things That Predict How Well You'll Age | Ep. 45

    Episode 45

    Show notes

What does new research actually say predicts how well you'll age, and are you already doing the things that matter most?

There is an enormous amount of research on healthy aging, and most of it shows correlation rather than causation. But a few findings are genuinely useful. In this episode of Yoga for Longevity, Mikah Horn walks through two recent studies that stuck with her: one on muscular strength, measured by grip strength and how quickly you can stand up from a chair, and one on the variety of movement in your life.

If you're over 50 and you've been hearing the strength training conversation but aren't sure where you fit, or you've been wondering whether your current movement is really enough, this episode is for you.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • What grip strength actually measures, and why it's such a strong marker of longevity
    • The everyday ability that signals how well you're aging, and how to make it more challenging
    • Why the variety of movement in your life may matter as much as the amount
    • Why Mikah trains the "independence muscles" that keep everyday tasks doable, like carrying groceries and getting off the floor

    Episode 44

If you've recently been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia, you've probably been told a lot of things to avoid: Don't bend. Don't twist. Be careful with yoga. And if you've stopped doing the movement practice you love because you're not sure what's safe anymore, this episode is for you.

In this conversation, Mikah Horn answers the two questions she gets asked most often by students who've been recently diagnosed: Is yoga safe with osteoporosis? And is it actually beneficial? The answers, honestly, are more nuanced than what most women are being told.

This episode unpacks why fear-based exercise advice can do more harm than good, what the research really says about yoga and bone density (including Dr. Loren Fishman's well-known 12-year study), and the three things yoga does that matter enormously for someone with osteoporosis. None of which depend on growing bone density numbers on your DEXA scan.

If you've felt confused or scared after a recent diagnosis, or if you're wondering whether the yoga practice you love can still be part of your life, this episode is for you.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • Why the fear-based "don't bend or twist" advice can leave women with osteoporosis more vulnerable, not less
    • What the research actually shows about yoga and bone density (and where it gets honest about the limits)
    • The 3 things bone-mindful yoga does that matter more than most people realize for protecting against fracture
    • Why posture is the most underrated piece of bone safety, and how yoga genuinely improves it

    Episode 43

    Show notes

What really causes that rounded upper back posture as we age? In this episode, Mikah Horn explores hyperkyphosis and why it’s about so much more than “standing up straight.” From movement habits and muscle imbalances to breathing, balance, bone health, and osteoporosis, this conversation unpacks the deeper reasons posture changes over time and what we can actually do to support a stronger, more resilient body.

You’ll learn why posture is one of the most important pillars of healthy aging and how gentle, intentional movement can help you move with more confidence, ease, and stability for years to come.

    In This Episode, You’ll Learn:

    • What hyperkyphosis is and why it becomes more common with aging
    • How posture affects balance, breathing, mobility, and pain
    • Why “bad posture” is often much more complex than people realize
    • The role repetitive movement patterns and sitting play in spinal changes
    • How muscle imbalances between the chest and upper back develop over time
    • Why movement variability is essential for healthy aging
    • The 7 movements of the spine and why they matter
    • How osteoporosis and spinal compression fractures can contribute to kyphosis

  20. The Exhaustion of Constantly Trying to Fix Yourself | Ep. 42

    Episode 42

    Show notes

What happens when the constant pressure to fix yourself becomes its own form of exhaustion?

In this reflective episode, Mikah Horn shares insights inspired by hosting her first yoga retreat in Costa Rica, held at the very same retreat center where she completed her yoga teacher training 10 years ago. Returning to that space brought up a deeper understanding of a simple but powerful phrase: “Let it be.”

This conversation explores the tension so many people feel when navigating pain, healing, aging, and change. Especially in a culture that encourages constant self-improvement, it can become easy to relate to the body as a project that is never quite good enough.

Through the lens of yoga philosophy, nervous system awareness, and compassionate movement, this episode offers a gentler perspective. One that allows room for growth without constant struggle.

If you’ve been feeling frustrated with your body, impatient with healing, or exhausted from always trying to optimize yourself, this episode is an invitation to soften the grip.

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • How resistance can increase physical and emotional suffering
    • The yoga philosophy concept of Ishvara Pranidhana, or surrender
    • How chronic self-monitoring can disconnect us from our bodies
    • Why healing and aging are rarely linear
    • Simple ways to release unnecessary tension throughout the day
    • How awareness can shift your relationship with pain and frustration
    • What it means to support your body instead of constantly fighting it
